A blog chronicling they revamp of my 15mm WW2 collection, to be used with both FoW and Blitzkrieg Commander. The Armies in question being German Infantry company and a British Paratrooper company.

This represents a recent undertaking whereby I have stripped my Germans and am starting with them again. The Paratroopers are a brand new project. It's also the first time I have used quick shade with 15mm and the results have very much impressed me. All miniatures are by battlefront.

Basing material is Squadron Green Putty, I found it in a local model shop but its freely available online. I have this found to be excellent, be warned though, when wet is it has quite a potent smell. It's squeezed from a metal tube and you can then spread it evenly over the base. I find if you squeeze a diagonal line across the base, this provides about the right amount. You should then place the miniature in the putty with a small blob of Superglue and then leave to dry. When dry (this take about a hour) a few patches of sand are glued to the base with pva.

A platoon of paratroopers freshly based but without a lick of paint.

Paints are a mix of GW and Coat d'arms.

A few stands which I have started to paint.

Some finished Stands. The uniform is painted in Coat d'arms British Kaki and a few spots of Tank Green (CDA) and Scorched Brown (GW) put on the jerkin to give the impression of camouflage. The backpacks and poaches are painted with Field Drab (CDA) and the Helmets with Russian Green(CDA) . The rifles are painted with Dark Leather (CDA) and the SMGs/Brens with Iron Grey(CDA) . Flesh is just Dwarf Flesh (GW).

The figures are then stained. This is done with brush as it's overkill to dunk 15mm and you will almost certainly obscure the details. I used an old Tank brush for this.

After about 24 hours the based was painted Scorched Brown and a quick drybrush of Orc Brown is made over the sandy areas of the base. Then a few patches of GW static grass are glued on the base, in the areas not covered in sand. Then a few patches of clump foliage are applied. This is fairly standard stuff available from any model shop for a few pounds. After this the base is sprayed with matt varnish. This takes the shine off the dip and seals the base nicely which stops the foliage from flaking off later.

Some support elements, a 6pdr a howitzer and mortar team. Full platoons of each will be in the finished list.

The Germans. Not done many of these sofar.

A few stands that have been based and undercoated. The tree stumps are simply bits of twig glued in place during basing.

A finished stand. The uniform was painted with Field Grey (CDA) and the helmets with Iron Grey (CDA). I plan to add some Waffen SS platoons in a few months with will provide a interesting opportunity to paint camouflage.

My first Vehicle. The Stug was painted with a thinned down coat of Tausept Ochre (GW) and then a thinned coat of Desert Yellow (GW) over that. The camouflage was Scorched Brown (GW) and Tank Green (CDA). The Cammo can do with improvement I think. But overall I'm fairly happy.

Stay tuned for hopefully more updates!

The bases for your figures / tank is amazing. I like the grass to mud ratio. Tank looks good but I would consider a little weathering ieaint chipping, dirt etc...Very rarely do you get to see a clean tank. Thats just IMO.

"Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds." ~ HK-47

I agree with Frenzied Potato, infantry looks great, tank needs weathering

Thanks guys, I agree about the weathering. I may change this over the next few days. It’s a subtle balancing act in my experience and too much can just be overkill. I also haven’t worked up the courage to try unit markings yet. A platoon of Marders is next on the painting table this weekend so I’ll see how they turn out.

Weathering is quite easy. Use boltgun metal and drybrush lightly over the edges on the tank. For mud splatter I drybrush with skorched brown on the belts and lower part of the chassis, then over that even lighter I drybrush dwarf flesh on. When all of that is done I wash the entire model in devlan mud and voila:

Ace. I'll give that a try.

Nice looking stuff there Lucius. I especially like the way you've done the bases for your models. It's a nice variety with the low walls and the fallen trees. It's funny to see how each person does their bases differently.

Keep up the good work, hope to see more soon.

Looking good, especially the paratroopers. Where did you get the walls from - are they the battlefront ones? As for weathering, I think that the camo areas on your stug would benefit from a light drybrush of the yellow highlight colour to make them less bright. Also, though you are probably aware of this already, when weathering german tanks, you should use a red oxide colour like terracotta to represent the very powerful primer used and uncovered by most wounds and scratches. Only the biggest/deepest wounds would go down to a shiny metal finish.

Looking forward to seeing more! Keep up the good work.

Yes the walls are just Battlefront ones that came with an infantry company boxed set I picked up a while ago.
