Dakka? What is metal?

In Golden Eyed Scout's Brutal/Metal thread, someone posted a picture of a Disturbed album cover. Someone else said yeah, it would be metal, if the name Disturbed wasn't on there.

In what way are Disturbed not Metal?

According to wiki, the description for Heavy Metal goes such:
Wikipedia wrote:Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes. New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes, "In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force." The typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound.

All of these are characteristics of Bands like Disturbed, yet people dispute their classing of metal. The same is for many bands, such as Slipknot, where I may not like them all the time, but still see them as metal. Even bands like Cannibal Corpse I see as metal, even though I think they sound like someone shat on a CD.

What do you think Dakka? and please no "XXX BAND ARE GAK COS I DON"T LIKE THEM" or "ZOMG THIS BAND IS SOOOO NOT METAL COS THEY ARNT BROOTAL ENUFF!". That will just make you sound like a moron.

Ultimately it doesnt come down to the music, but the people that listen to said music. I love metal, and a good deal of its subgenres (folk, power, prog and melo-death being my main, but theres a little of everything in my itunes now) but dislike the vast majority of their fans. Everyone is divided and will only listen to their select 'subgenre' in most cases and anything thats not in said exclusive area is not 'true', 'kult' or metal. On the flip-side I am always looking for more people that share the music taste that I do, and are open minded about listening to bands that are 'non-metal'.

This tends to happen as follows:

1. Black Metal fan. Anything that isnt black metal is not metal at all.

2. General dislike for Nu-metal (e.g Disturbed, Korn, Slipknot). This seems to be prevalent among many members of the 'metal community', though I can't understand why. I dont like a large amount of Nu-metal, but Disturbed and the likes of Godsmack I love.

3. Power metal is gak/dragonforce syndrome. My favourite subgenre, but dragonforce is not on my list. However they are the first band many think of when I say 'power metal'. Because of this lots of people hate the bands I love for no reason, or based on 'every song sounds the same'. It makes me sad.

4. Many metal bands fit into several sub-genres and there is constant arguing of what fits where, further dividing people and causing arguments.

5. The 'prog' click. Similar to Black Metal. Anything that doesnt 'fit in' is discarded and said to be 'not prog/ metal enuff'

6 Metalcore. It has a fairly large fanbase as it is often seen as the more commerical of the metal sub-genres. Often involves 'bandwaggoning' from fans. Ultimately I dont mind this, and while I dont like the vast majority of the music I'm happy to let it lie. But I dislike the amount of hate thats thrown to towards the genre as a whole.

Ultimately I can go back to my earlier maxim. Love the music, dislike the fans. Everyone should be on the same side, no matter what sub-genre they like. But not everyone thinks as I do...

Apologies if I have slandered anyones beloved sub-genre.

This question could open up a can of worms since there are many forms of Metal for example -

Nu Metal - Linkin Park, Disturbed,Stained,Slipknot
Thrash Metal - Slayer,Metallica,Megadeth
Heavy Metal - Iron Maiden,Diamond Head,Judas Priest
Death Metal - Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth

There are probably even more variations out there!

I generally just say this of metal, just like Lemmy.

All have made good points so far.

Oshunai: Your tastes are almost exactly like mine. My favourites are Melodeath (Mainly Swedish) and Power metal (Australian and European mainly) with scericks of everything thrown in.

gak hit's the fan whenevr you talk about power metal to a dedicated Cannibal Corpse fan, who listens to nothing but Death metal, and they just call anything not death metal, not metal. Like Iron Maiden. I swear I nearly killed that guy...

Another thing I agree with Oshunai with is the People who think the only power metal band in existence is Dragonforce, and the only song they eer released was Through The Fire and Flames. It is a good song, but not by Power Metal Standards. If you want great speed, melody and power, listen to this:

This man speaketh the truth. I dislike the American style of power metal, to an extent. Far more European really. Further info on my listenings are here: http://www.last.fm/user/Oshunai

I have that experience of the dislike/disregard for power metal whenever It comes up in conversation with an advent fan of Metallica. Shame really. The best part is when he said 'my favourite dragonforce album is guitar hero III'.

If Iron Maiden isnt metal then the new Dark Eldar codex is going to come out within the year.

In that case, I'd add these bands into varying genres to appease ol' Frazz...

Led Zepplin
Helloween
Black Label Society

Oh and almost any speed metal band can fit into either thrash or power genres as thats what speed evolved into.

Except that Sabbath predated metal as a recognised genre... Iron Maiden would be more accurate.

I'm going to Screamfest in Sydney just to see Sonata Arctica.

I find Disturbed irritating to listen to. It's like every song is an alternate version of Rattamahatta by Sepultura. Unsurprisingly, they formed the same year that that single was released.

Ach no, not the whole what is metal thingie again...

You forgot Black Metal as a genre, as Dimmu borgir & Cradle are about as Death Metal as a soggy sandwich. Death Metal is stuff like Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Nile, Zyklon and Gojira.

Cradle and Dimmu used to be proper Black Metal along with bands such as Mayhem, Emperor, Taimet, Darkthrone, Meads of Asphodel and Chthonic. They are both a bit pantomine-essque now.

And you forgot the ever awesome Doom/Doom Metal/Stoner subgenre, consisting of

Sunn 0)))

Earth
Burning Witch
Thor's Hammer
The Reverend Bizzare
Orange Goblin

Very rarely will is say something like "ZOMG THAT IS SOOO NOT METAL", so I am breaking my own rule here, but, That is not metal.

There is no heavy emphasis on, well, anything really. There is no Melody. There is no beat. Just a wave of noise.

I have been told that it is incredible when you are tripping something intense though.

In reply to the question posed by the Original poster:

Metals are sometimes described as an arrangement of positive ions surrounded by a cloud of delocalized electrons. They are one of the three groups of elements as distinguished by their ionization and bonding properties, along with the metalloids and nonmetals. On the periodic table, a diagonal line drawn from boron (B) to polonium (Po) separates the metals from the nonmetals. Most elements on this line are metalloids, sometimes called semi-metals; elements to the lower left are metals; elements to the upper right are nonmetals.

An alternative definition of metal refers to the band theory. If one fills the energy bands of a material with available electrons and ends up with a top band partly filled then the material is a metal. This definition opens up the category for metallic polymers and other organic metals, which have been made by researchers and employed in high-tech devices. These synthetic materials often have the characteristic silvery-grey reflectiveness (luster) of elemental metals.

Also Blink 182 seem cool </joke>

I have no use of your trivial designations. I have two designations that I use for all music. Stuff that I Like. Stuff that I Don't Like.

Some of what you call "metal", I do like. Motorhead. Old Sabbath.

Out of curiousity, is AC/DC or original Van Halen considered 'metal'? I've seen both groups listed as metal and both discounted as not being metal enough.

Metal is any music that resonates with the racket that has been bouncing around the inside of my skull since the day I was born. I tend to most like the extremely aggressive, angry bands, but I also like Korn, Van Halen (NOT Van Hagar...) 80's bands that didn't fall for the hair-metal crap (Raven, Killer Dwarf, Dio) Unfortunately, lots of people have to insult other peoples' choices. The only sub-genre of metal that I dislike is christian metal. It's not real music, merely another form of propaganda.
