The scientific community has a similar problem defining heavy metal.

Wikipedia wrote:A heavy metal is a member of an ill-defined subset of elements that exhibit metallic properties, which would mainly include the transition metals, some metalloids, lanthanoids, and actinides. Many different definitions have been proposed—some based on density, some on atomic number or atomic weight, and some on chemical properties or toxicity. The term heavy metal has been called "meaningless and misleading" in an IUPAC technical report due to the contradictory definitions and its lack of a "coherent scientific basis".

I'm with Lemmy - it's just Rock&Roll. I likes me some Motorhead, but also some Dream Theater, and some Social Distortion.

"Metal" for me is anything heavy sounding with distortion on the guitars. From there it branches out into different types because people feel the need to label things, but it's all metal to me. For me, disturbed is metal, and so is bolt thrower and so is cradle of filth and so is black sabbath. even though they have different sounding music, they're still all "metal".

Unfortunately, the countless pointless sub genres, the petty elitism of many metal fans and automatic hatred of any act that gains any kind of recognition outside of the metal ‘scene’ pretty much killed metal for me quite some time ago. Go onto any metal forum and the whole community seems to be engaged in a permanent pissing contest regarding who can be the most ‘metal’.

I still enjoy some metal bands, but I have no time for the scene anymore, partly because I got sick of having to justify my liking of almost any band to random strangers.

I have to agree it seems all people do now is have to justify what bands they listen to take for example the still ongoing Metallica vs Megadeth thing, this has been ongoing for over 25yrs! fans of each band still fight against each other rather than stand together and support the scene, and again back in the early 90's the whole Guns N Roses vs Metallica I got so much stick for meing a Guns fan from the Metallica fans, it's so petty and pointless

Out of curiousity, is AC/DC or original Van Halen considered 'metal'? I've seen both groups listed as metal and both discounted as not being metal enough.

No hard rock for both.

Sunn 0))) are awesome when one is tripping, or so I have been told. However, the old addages of "oh, it's just noise" or "there's nothing to that" are woefully ill-equipped to describe what Sunn 0))) actually sound like.

The recent 'Domkirke' Vinyl in Bergen, Norway for example contains the song "Why Dost They Hide Thyself In Cloud?" and is perhaps one fo the most poignant and beautifal pieces of music I have ever heard. Along with the rather wonderful "Altar" (a wonderful split ep they did with Boris) and their more recent "Monoliths..." album, Sunn 0))) are capable of great depth and subtelty.

It doesn't bother me that other people don't get it, just like to inform folks ^^

In chemistry, a metal is an element, compound, or alloy characterized by high electrical conductivity. In a metal, atoms readily lose electrons to form positive ions (cations); those ions are surrounded by delocalized electrons, which are responsible for the conductivity. The solid thus produced is held by electrostatic interactions between the ions and the electron cloud, which are called metallic bonds.

Metals on the Period Table has atomic number of 3, 4, 11 - 13, 19-31, 37-50, 55-83. Above that they are radioactive.

Depending on the 'era' I would go so far as to say that Halen was Glam Rock, while AC/DC has always been, and always will be, 'High Voltage Rock and Roll'.

A big part of it comes down to where you hear it. Very rarely will a "mainstream" band be considered as metal as they could be because everyone wants to be part of an exclusive club. Dream Theater owns your soul regardless.

it has been scientifically proven that heavy metals are elements that will eventually collaspe upon themselves can given rise to singularities. This property can be found in the elements that reside in the core of black holes. These singularities open portals to parallel universes. It might sound crazy but then again it has also been proven that the subatomic particle known as the Tacychtron travels faster than the speed of light and actually moves backwards in time. I love quantum mechanics.

This is my simple opinion on the "what IS metal" question.
I've been asked in the past "what is punk" and answerd by saying it encomposess alot of varying styles, and honestly no one style can be labled as "punk".
Are the Ramones punk...yup.
Are the Dead Kennedys punk...yup.
Is Social Distortion punk...yup.
How bout the Misfits..yup.
and The Clash...yup.
Do they sound the same...nope.
And the same can be said for Metal
Is Hatebreed metal...yup
Is Judas Priest...you better belive it.
How bout Dimmu Borgir...sure is.
Is Iron Maiden..of course
How bout MotorHead...so metal they kill your lawn.
Do they sound the same....nope.
Basicly what I'm getting at is "Metal" is an all encomposing term,IMO,to describe a particular varity of music, some good, some not so good, all of it anoys the nieghbors.
