Indeed.

Some of what you call "metal", I do like. Motorhead. Old Sabbath.
Out of curiousity, is AC/DC or original Van Halen considered 'metal'? I've seen both groups listed as metal and both discounted as not being metal enough.
No hard rock for both.
Depending on the 'era' I would go so far as to say that Halen was Glam Rock, while AC/DC has always been, and always will be, 'High Voltage Rock and Roll'.
BLASPHEMER!
This reminds me... do we consider Ministry to be metal? Or is it just Industrial?
I've not heard of them, but I am older than dirt.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. Corey unzips the jacket he had been wearing all day so far. Under it, is a Linkin Park shirt.
Kyle starts bashing Linkin Park calling them a
"Bunch of mainstream wannabe Metal band".
I got nothing against making fun off something, but I've never considered LP to be a metal band. mor punk or har rock.
Does anybody here think of them as metal?
When Linkin Park first emerged, me and my mates considered them a Nu-metal band, because of the rapping. And self-pity.
When it comes to metal, apart from the ubiquitous Led Zep/Sabbath/Purple et al. the only (semi)modern metal stuff I like is stuff like My Dying Bride. See below.
Very moody and evocative, and totally UN-cheesy. Just cool music. I'm not really into 'Typewriter-core' bands - just not my scene.
And how about Soundgarden...? Hang on, I know what you're gonna say, but:
Now tell me THAT isn't heavy. Early Soundgarden: Don't get stoned without it.

Soundgarden popped my cherry for rock music, before that all I ever knew about was my mom's oldies station.
As far as the original topic, it would be hard, if not impossible to define what is "metal" as it's a pretty subjective definition, and as stated earlier there are a f-ton of sub groups.
Somebody said something about "christian metal" earlier, but I would submit that alot of bands recording under christian labels are not at all christian. It's just a good way for indie bands to retain some creative rights, and also build up an extremely loyal following. I also reject the argument that christian metal is garbage because it's all propaganda. That's actually kind of ignorant, like saying "I refuse to to listen to anything non-christian because it's all devil worship." I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard that drivel growing up.
I digress.
All metal is to me is simply loud hard rock music with a certain attitide. I dislike Disturbed, but I can't say they're not metal, just over-exposed.

"Metal" really isn't something that can be defined because it varies so wildly. I can't say that I know much about the beginning of metal and all of the older bands, but i can definitely pick out metal when i hear it. Also since everyone is dropping favorite bands and styles, ill contribute my taste in metal: I love speed and intensity in my music, nothing is more pleasing than the constant pounding of double kick in a metal song. One thing that bothers me to no end is hearing, "they are just screaming! I don't even know what they're saying!" its the sound of the screams and bellows that add intensity to the song, not the lyrics. I thought that i should bring in some very different metal than what has been previously mentioned:
Musicologically speaking, Heavy Metal CAN be defined by way of generic signification. Members of certain subcultures often claim that the genre they belong to is indefinable and resist attempts to 'pigeon-hole' them. The fact is, genre is a natural product of musical meta-discourse - the fact that we are talking about, and thus 'defining' Metal proves that it exists as a genre, taken here to mean a style of dress, music and life philosophy. The fact that subdivisions exist within a genre is nothing new and doesn't invalidate the parent genre.
Sorry if that was a bit 'wordy' - I don't normally post like this, as I think it makes people sound like tossers if they use too much 'jargon' or florid language! This happens to be my field (Musicology), so I thought I'd add my perspective.
Are Bolt Thrower metal? I don't listen to much music apart from them and soundtracks, so I don't know for sure if they are.
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

They are. They are one of the funnier death metal bands out there. Like Dethklok, but they take themselves kinda seriously.

I don't know what metal is despite listening to it, there's so many subgenres being argued about that it makes me dizzy to try and classify them all further than just "metal". To me metal has always been a way of thinking/doing things. Metal is being loud, enjoying the times when you stand out from everyone else, pushing limits, and being surrounded by people. For music however I believe metal is already defined by certain chords being used and/or method of drum use or something. It's the sub-genres that ruin it, nu, thrash, black, melodic, doom, etc, there's too much to sort though. I rather group them all together as "metal".
"I drive a big car, cuz I'm a big star. I'll make a big rock-and-roll hit." "I am a big car, and I'm a strip bar. Some call it fake, I call it good-as-it-gets."

In Golden Eyed Scout's Brutal/Metal thread, someone posted a picture of a Disturbed album cover. Someone else said yeah, it would be metal, if the name Disturbed wasn't on there.
In what way are Disturbed not Metal?
According to wiki, the description for Heavy Metal goes such:
Wikipedia wrote:Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes. New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes, "In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force." The typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound.
All of these are characteristics of Bands like Disturbed, yet people dispute their classing of metal. The same is for many bands, such as Slipknot, where I may not like them all the time, but still see them as metal. Even bands like Cannibal Corpse I see as metal, even though I think they sound like someone shat on a CD.
What do you think Dakka? and please no "XXX BAND ARE GAK COS I DON"T LIKE THEM" or "ZOMG THIS BAND IS SOOOO NOT METAL COS THEY ARNT BROOTAL ENUFF!". That will just make you sound like a moron.
Disturbed are metal, but I don't listen them.I dislike Slipknot and all screaming. My favorite sub genres are neo-classical metal and speed metal.

Woah, we have nearly the same song count, but you have a band with nearly 6,000 plays. Lordy.
Chances are really good that if it is played on the radio in the US, it's not metal.
And yes, there is "Christian" metal. Some of it is really good, most of it is trite and horrible. Believer and Mortification were both incredible back in the day.

Disturbed are most certainly -not- metal. They're best song is a frikking cover of a PHIL COLLINS song.
