As you can see from the pics, marines stepping out of the LR would be in the line of fire for the sponsoons.
Is there a way round this. (fluff wise)

You stop firing long enough for the Marines to get out?

Either that or, I don't know, the Marines duck.

You could also go the route some go and put the sponsons in front.

I actually put the sponsons of mine on the front. I reckon it's like this:

They use the front hatch for the all out assault, while the sponsons keep firing at things around them.

They use the side hatches (now BEHIND) the sponsons for when they need to get out and move, the sponson provide covering fire.

I never got why they put them in the position they're generally shown in.

Those side hatches aren't commonly used; the Land Raider is designed to dump them out the front. I'm guessing those side hatches are only for an emergency. A Terminator wouldn't even fit in that little door.

I put mine in back because I think it looks better from an aesthetics points of view. The tank looks more balanced with them back there(it has to do with the length of the cannons).

Hmm, it could be that.

I use a Crusader, and the stubby Hurricane bolters look really silly at the back.

Yeah, my Crusader has the Bolters up front, too. My Helios(lascannons) has them in back, as does my Prometheus(I tried them up front and it looked wrong somehow). When I get a redeemer the flame cannons are going up front(it makes more sense to me as they're flame throwers).

SoCal, USA!

One can always place the weapon sponsons in front.

That actually makes more sense.

Yeah obviously but why are they built like that on the majority of tanks?

The eye of terror.

Most of the art in the Marine codex shows the weapons being in the front.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

Because if a full unit can't deploy from the front they can exit via the side hatches and still be in coherency.
