I have chaos gate - always fun but a pain on a vista machine. Anyone know of any others? Something similar to WHFB would be awesome for some-one who studies FT and works FT. Had enough of RTS games although I do enjoy DOW and FPS don't relax me I just get more hyped.

The Might and Magic series are decent. I've got 3 and 7 IIRC, and they're pretty fun. Resource management, exploration, and turn-based combat in a fantasy world.
Fallout 1 & 2, Tactics are incredible but are more of an RPG with turn-based combat.

Chaos Gate was great. X-Com UFO Defense was possibly the greatest turn-based PC strategy game ever. The AI in X-Com was positively fiendish and the surprises you get from each of the new types of aliens you run into on the first play through will make your jaw drop. This game made PC Gamer's list of 50 best games of all time every year for years after its release because the game play was just so incredibly great. Even though it's ancient by computer game standards, if you can find a way to play it don't miss it.

Civ 4 with the upgrades is completely addictive. I usually think, "I'll play just one more turn." Then three hours later I'm faling asleep at my computer.
I do also love the Total War series, but you can't really do well in the game if you don't lead your armies in the rts battles.

Fallout Tactics is a good suggestion. Haven't played that in years and would probably appeal to 40k players on some level.
I also enjoyed final fantasy tactics on the GBA and Ogre Battle on the SNES. Both are.. erm.. "attainable"

Fallout Series is Good,
Earlier ones are more fun than the newer ones, but that might just be me
Heroes of Might and Magic ranks up there as my all time favorites a for multilayer with friends on a turn based game.
Another series is called Jagged Alliance,
control a team of Mercenaries and mange their team and equipment and recruit new mercs.
Older game,
but really good for turn based (Like Fallout but in a more realistic environment)

+1 on Jagged Alliance 2 (never played #1), there are also allot of additionas and mods available on the webz.
X-com Apocalyse for me in that series, not played it since my mum threw out an old PC while I was at work and had left the disk in the CD drive!
Its not RTS but I can not pass up the opportunity to rave about the Close Combat series of games, the best wargame out there IMHO, mostly WW2 era but there is a modern US marines version (#6?) and there is even a 40k mod kicking around!

Jagged Alliance 2 -- especially with the newer patch. With that one, the AI is smart enough to outlfank and there are boatloads of different weapons now. Other good changes, too.
I'll also add +1 for X-Com. You know, in the 90's they made lots of games that were actually fun. I did like Apocolypse, too. It had kind of a "Sim City" feel to it. I liked the occasional gang war which would break out.
War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition, from Matrix Games. The entire Pacific war with the map covering everything between the US and India at 40 miles per hex. Each turn is one day. This one can take over your life if you get into it.
The original War in the Pacific uses 60 mile hexes. It's cheaper that AE.
I'm currently playing WITP's little brother, War Plan Orange, which is a hypothetical war vs Japan in the 1920s. Moves along faster, with limited airpower involved. I've been cranking out turns while painting my Stegadon.
http://www.matrixgames.com/
The original Combat Mission series from Battlefront is good. It's turn based, but both players plot their moves at the same time. The computer then generates the turn from that to play a one minute movie of that turn. WWII armor and infantry. Sort of a computer version of Advanced Squad Leader.
http://www.battlefront.com/
I do miss Chaos Gate, being that it's "old school" WH40k. It would CTD on the campaign for me. I didn't feel like dealing with DOSbox or its equivalents.

Also, this is for consoles, but the Fire Emblem series is really awesome. You might be able to find a way to get a backup copy for your computer, just in case you lose the cartridge.

My favourite turn based games starting from least to most are ...
Orion 2
( cheap and cheerful, nice and simple, I've played Orion 3 and to be honest can't get my head around the new version of this game so prefer the older)
Civilisations Test of Time
( Comprises of the Extended version of Civ2, Fantasy Version and Sci-Fi Version and possible another version I can't remember)
( I've had some truely wonderful games in the Sci-fi version of this game, where I've actually struggled to win making it far more enjoyable experience than the "I know I've won, its just a matter of time" type games. Namely my opponent kept building things to block my attacks, coastal fortresses when I built a navy or SDI defence when I built nukes, the AI seemed very good at predicting my plans in this version of Civ)
Imperium Galactica II ( 2 for those who don't like roman numerals )
( The best turn based war game I've ever personally played, it lets you oversee the position and construction of everything built on your planets, lets you customise the weapons and abilities of your spaceships and even creating your own variants of each ships allowing for tactical use of weapons/abilities, also has excellent combat simulator. And for the lazy people, you can even automate everything I've listed above)
( The game also has great re-play-ability due to its ramdom events generator, the only bad thing I will say is these events are pre-set for the game, they just happen in random order. It also comes with 4disc's, one installation and three for the three different races you can play. Human(Std Medium) Shinari(low military, fantastic economy/trade) Kra'hen(Xenophobic, huge military capabilities/strenght, low economy))

I've also been playing Advance Wars on the DS, which is a great game. Interesting story and incredibly elegant system of tactics/turn-based play.
Get FF Tactics (for the original PS), one of the best tactics games I've played. Rites of War is a good game too, especially if you like 40K.

I mention this game from time to time, hardly anyone knows it.
It is so old it asks you if you have a hard disk, it doesnt even supply 256 colours, you have to make do with 16, yet it has a depth and execution lacking in many many current titles even in its genre.

Masters of Orion 2. It's SciFi, but one that I've spent more time on that than probably any other game. Turn based with customizable races. You explore the galaxy and colonize star systems. You'll compete with other races that wish to take over the galaxy.
Master of Orion 3 is crap. Don't bother with it.
Sid Meyers Alpha Centari is also turn-based, SciFi. You're on an alien planet, competing with other colonies. You can make alliances with some of the colonies, but watch out for bait-and-switch alliances.
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation is similar to Masters of Orion 2 in many ways, but you get to play with cool Star Trek ships. Federation and Romulan are my two favorites to play.
