Yeah, the game designers must have had a meeting early on:
Dude #1: How can we make this game horrible for the players?
Dude #2: Well, instead of letting them focus on exploring planets and fighting starship battles, let's make them spend 90% of the time on resource management!
Dude #1: Yeah! In house, we'll call this game Masters of Accounting 3.

Rites of war was pretty fun with units advancement with experience gain.
Civ games you can never go wrong there, really good fun.
X-Com UFO was a great game!
On the DS squadf command isnt too bad, reminded me of chaos gate, might have to go get the stuff to run it again
Can't remember anymore off the top of my head just now though as I have forgot half the games I played turn based or at least their name think one was warlords something, fantasy based and very simplistic graphics but very good on playability.

The UFO:
Series.
I have UFO: Aftermath. There are about 5 games though and each of them is turn based. Good for a diversion every now and then.
Soldiers of Anarchy is a hiden gem, as well.
You have a squad based tactical game that plays like real life. You can "Aquire " yourself a small fortune and loads of modern military hardwar that yu can upgrade and use against the enemy groups that are out there.
I really recommend this one alot.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Some people do like it and it has a lot of depth, but to appreciate it you need to micromanage from hell.
MoO 3 has been decribed 'as much fun as doing your taxes'. This I can concur with, but it would have made a kicking good PBeM.

My Fav all time classic turn based game, and one that raised the bar was the "Combat Missions" game series. This game allowed you to plan out your moves like a stratagy game, then played them along with your opponents turn in real time (like a vcr function) It was based iin the Second World war and covered many many units, countries, and was very comprehensive. A must play!

The new Blood Bowl game can be played turn based, but it's so incredibly imbalanced, I wouldn't recommend it.
Fallout 1&2 are AMAZING still, even decades after they came out.
Personally, I usually don't go in for turn based strategy games, as almost all of them require a LOT of save->die->load->retry, which is not what I personally look for in a game.
If you have a PS3, I can vouch for Valkyria chronicles.

Seconded on both of these ones. The UFO games are definatley the spiritual successors of the incomparable XCOM games. Aftermath is fiendishly difficult and I found it a bit buggy and annoying. Aftershock, however, is a work of unmitigated genius. Just the right mix of resource and personnel management linked to a rewarding combat system.
Its not quite turn based, however you can pause and give your guys orders that they follow after you hit go. There is nothing as cool as watching your team (in real time) leapfrogging forward under covering fire from a marksman or 2 with XM-8s
The other neat thing in Aftershock is the weapon customisation.
Haven't really given UFO Afterlight much attention, however you're in charge of a Mars research base... neat or what
Soldiers of Anarchy is also a little gem, although it too can be buggy as hell and the learning curve is pretty damn precipitous
Again its rather satisfying wandering about gunning down post-apocalyptic gangs in your T55 and stealing all their stuff

There is one really good fantasy one in my opinion, Battle for Wesnoth. maybe not so graphically exciting, but for a FREE game it looks quite good. Most free TBS games are rather ugly. It's downloadable at www.wesnoth.org

What? Unbalanced? How? It's an EXACT recreation of the board game. It's Living Rulebook v. 5 in a digitally rendered medium. How is it unbalanced?

X-Com Apocalypse was a great game. I'm told however that running it through DosBox can be... difficult.
And I'm surprised no one has mentioned Final Liberation. It's basically Epic 2nd Ed in digital form. Sadly, only Orks and Imperium (Guard/Ultramarines/Adeptus Titanicus), but it's loads of fun.
Fallout Tactics is great, but I play that in Real-Time, not Turn-Based. Fallout 1 &2 are awsome (prefer Fallout 2 - better and more useful party system).
And X-Com UFO: Enemy Unknown and X-Com UFO: Terror from the Deep are just beyond cool. And really hard! And on Steam for cheap.
And once I have a PC that can run it, Blood Bowl!!!

XCom - I played it through last year for the first time in 10 years or so, and I still crapped my pants the first time I saw a Chrysalid. That's how good the game is.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |
