What shall we do?
OPTION A - Swap Deff Dred for Lootas
OPTION B - Swap Primaris for Techpriest and Ratlings
OPTION C - I've come up with a much better idea and will write it below
OPTION D - You're FOOLS. You should only EVER take MeltaVets to tournaments. And what are Squats, anyway?

So me and Panic are off to a doubles tourney next week with some scratch built forces. We need a bit of advice, due to an oversight on my part when reading the rules. So here goes...

RULES of the tourney

- 1000pts in total, 500pts per player, no 'swapping' of points.
- Each 500pt army MUST include 1 Troops & 1 HQ
- Each 1000pt total army MAY include a further 1 Heavy, 1 Fast and 1 Elites.
- Once the 1000pt total army has 1 Heavy, 1 Fast and 1 Elites, it may THEN take a further 1 Heavy, 1 Fast and 1 Elites.

THIS was our intended army...

GROTS (All vehicles piloted by Grots, the big mek is a Grot in a converted Tau Battlesuit)

HQ: Big Mek (1#, 105 pts)
1 Big Mek @ 105 pts (Choppa; Kustom Force Field; Furious Charge; Mob Rule; Waaagh!; 'Eavy Armour; Cybork Body; Grot Oiler x1; Mek's Tools)

Troops: Gretchin (16#, 60 pts)
15 Gretchin @ 60 pts (Grot Blasta; It's a Grot's Life)
1 Runtherd (Grot-Prod x1; Slugga; Furious Charge; Squig Hound)

Troops: Deff Dread (1#, 90 pts)
1 Deff Dread @ 90 pts (Count as Troop Troops; Dreadnought CCW x2; Big Shoota x1; Skorcha x1; Grot Rigger)

Heavy Support: Killer Kans (3#, 140 pts)
3 Killer Kans @ 140 pts (Dreadnought CCW; Big Shoota x2; Grotzooka x1; Grot Rigger x3)

Fast Attack: Warbuggies (3#, 105 pts)
1 Warbuggies @ 105 pts
1 Warbuggy (Twin Linked Rokkit Launcha)
1 Warbuggy (Twin Linked Rokkit Launcha)
1 Warbuggy (Twin Linked Rokkit Launcha)

SQUATS (All guardsmen are Squats, the primaris psyker is a converted Squat Ancestor Lord, mortars are Squat Mole Mortars)

HQ: Ancestor Lord (Primaris Psyker) (1#, 70pts)
- Primaris Psyker (1#, no options)

Troops: Infantry Platoon (25#, 200pts)
- Command HQ (5#, 2 Plasmaguns)
- Infantry Squad (10#, Plasmagun, Mortar)
- Infantry Squad (10#, Plasmagun, Mortar)

Heavy Support: Leman Russ Squadron (1#, 230pts)
- Leman Russ Executioner (1#, Plasma Sponsons)

However, then we realised that this list includes 2 Heavies, 1 Fast Attack, but NO Elites! We're not allowed to take the second Heavy Support choice unless we include an Elites choice, and there's no way we want to drop either the Killa Kans or the Executioner. We simply have to find a way of including an elites choice. Here's the options we thought of....

OPTION A - Deff Dred swap for Lootas. The list would then run...

HQ - Big Mek
Troops - Grot Squat
Elites - Lootas
Fast - Buggies
Heavy - Kans

HQ - Primaris
Troops - Infantry Platoon (4 Plasmaguns, 2 Mortars)
Heavy - Executioner

OPTION B - Rejig the guard weapons, swap Primaris for bare Techpriest and minimum Ratlings.

HQ - Big Mek
Troops - Grot Squat
Troops - Deff Dred
Fast - Buggies
Heavy - Kans

HQ - Techpriest Enginseer
Elites - 3 Ratlings
Troops - Infantry Platoon (3 Plasmaguns, 2 Mortars, Heavy Bolter)
Heavy - Executioner

OPTION C - You think of a better option, and tell us what to doooo! Obviously we really don't want to lose any Plasmaguns (them Squats love their plasma!), or include any Orks in the Grot army (without a suitable conversion!)

There's WIP blogs going up for both armies. Panic's is at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261148.page

I voted for the Deff Dread for Lootas swap. Do you have the lootas modelled as grots, too?

We'll have to - we're thinking cyber-grots to represent the additional toughness, or grots with tracks for legs, or grots in some sort of power-harness. Something like that. Depends if we have the bits, and if we have time. The tournament is next weekend!

yeah,
While I don't mind doing the swap for lootas. 6 lootas with strength 7 deff guns seems like a fair trade. The problem is that I don't have all the parts yet, So I need to find suitable parts for the conversions... the current idea being either;
  • deff guns mounted on epic landraiders radio controlled by grots

  • epic landraider/cybergrots

  • So I need to find epic landraiders by next week, or lootas are not really a option!

The fact that each army has to have 1 heavy 1 elites and 1 fast attack, before it can take a second is fair enough. and most Lists will struggle to take a second anything without compromising something. So I kinda think we should take the opportunity to squeeze three heavies into our list by having the Leman Russ + 3 Kans + a Deff Dred (counts as troops) which would mean taking a Squat TechPrest and a few ratlings (aka the easy killpoint that needs to hide)

Our lists weakness is that our troops are a bit light and fragile! and I fear a assault hoard army could do us damage? But I want to take Kans and the Squats need to have a Battle Tank!

    Panic...

Ok, I've swapped out the Primaris for some Ratlings. We figured that, since we can take the Deff Dred as a Troops choice, we should.

This way, we'd be fielding an army with three Heavy Support choices (even though one is Troops) - given the restrictions on army lists, it's unlikely anyone else will have this amount of armour, which should hopefully give us a bit of game advantage.

We'll just have to hide away our Ratlings in any KP games!!

If you've already decided on keeping the Dred, thats cool I think it's a good and unique army. It might not win you the tournament but you're sure gonna get a lot of attention. That being said you should model some grot lootas anyway (I imagine them being somehow mounted on top of a platform (perhaps a warbuggy crow's nest) that rides on a single biker wheel. I'd model them myself, but I suck and I'd probably chop off a finger trying. Good luck in your tourny!!

The ratlings would be easier to include than the converted lootas, and I think a techpriest would be fluffier in a squats army anyway.

I'm glad you guys decided to kep the dread. I'm a fan of ork mek type stuff myself.

I wish you all the best of luck in your upcoming tourney. You guys will probably have the most fun/coolest converted army there.

I know in the other threads you mentioned that Panic is going to expand his grot army in the future. Do you have any plans on expanding your squats?

Either army would be fun to follow in P&M.

Thanks - we've both got P&M threads going...

    Squats - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261424.page
    Grots - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261148.page

And Panic is intending to expand his army up to 1500. I wasn't planning to, but it turns out I have some models left over, and I kinda like the idea of including a few more fluffy 'Squat' units - living ancestors, another Techpriest, another Executioner, some Robots (sentinels), Hearthguard etc...
