Hey dakkadakka- im new here and i joined as in my 1st year of gaming, have had no problems up until now. I have recently started playing about 800 point games with my new tau force (i started with eldar) and i got asked to play dark angels. I accepted. and i failed. mind you i dont have much.
anyway, how could i make a counter army list? His army consisted of:

1 librarian in land raider

1 drop pod
5 grey knights with a psycannon in land raider
5 grey knights with this enoying flamer (that rolled for strength and ap values) in drop pod

1 land raider with 2 lascannons, heavy bolter and storm bolter

HELP!

Well, its not Dark Angels but Ordo Malleus: Grey Knights.

If I understand right, your opponent had 2 Land Raiders, 2x 5 Grey Knights, and 1 Librarian.
Rather cheesy if you ask me at the 850 pt level.
I'd take 2x 3 Broadsides to counter his heavily armored tanks.

Cheers! but he had 1 land raider though. What about that pesky flamer? He was definately using dark angels as he had the codex and a problem is the nemesis force rods!

Pesky flamer? GK flamers negate cover and invulnerable saves.
You need to stop his LR and so slow down his advance.
If the MEQ units start footslogging you can decimated them easily with your Tau Warriors.

Well, drop podding is nasty.
But its a rather small unit.
You need to spread out your units a bit.

I'd take 3 Broadsides, 3 Battle Suits with plasmas, 2x 10 Tau Warriors...

Your opponent is not playing a legal army.

Indeed, his army list is well dodgy.

It is possible to combine units from the Dark Angels codex with units from the Daemonhunters codex (which has the Grey Knights), but only by allying in Daemonhunters to a DA army. For starters, he'd need to have at least 2 troops choices from the DA codex (which, if his HQ choice is a DA librarian, would need to be DA tactical squads in power armour).

Thanks kadun but could you explain why it is illegal? And Ian, i'l speak to him. I did find it dodgy as I thought you had to have 1 HQ and 2 Troops on the table at the start of the game

It's illegal, because the way you have it written down up there, he has no Troops choices from the Dark Angels Codex. If he's playing Dark angels with Grey Knights Allies, he's required to take 1 HQ(in this case, the Librarian) and 2 Troops(Dark Angels Tactical Squads) from the parent Codex before he can start buying Grey Knights for the army. If he was playing Grey Knights as his base army, it's STILL Illegal, as he requires 1 HQ from the Daemon Hunters Codex and can't bring ANY Space Marine Allies. As it is, it looks like he didn't properly read the Daemon Hunters Codex, as he does technically have 1 HQ 2 Troops, just not the 2 Troops required by the Allied rules. Inform him next time that if he wants to play you that he needs to play a legal army or ask his opponent if it's alright if he ignores the rules laid down in the Daemon Hunters Codex for Allies.

Also, your opponent can choose to start with nothing on the table if he wants and bring his entire army on from reserves.

As an earlier poster has said, you should take Broadsides to deal with the Land Raiders. Broadsides are one of the best choices in the tau codex and not taking them will hamstring you.

against Droppods, turn the situation around and keep your army off the table as well. , or sit in the corners where he runs the risk of scattering off table if he tries to get too close to you.

the other main key against MEQ's is to never never never split your fire. don't stop firing at a unit until it is dead dead dead.
