Time for another food thread I feel, as they are pretty much guaranteed not to cause argument, flaming etc. Sadly still not immune to Trolling, but hey ho.

So, it's 5:30, and you're heading round your Mum's for some much needed, and hopefully well deserved Birthday Din Dins. Rather than wasting money on some poncey restaurant with a snooty waiter, your treat is a home cooked meal from your Mumsie.

What's on the menu then?

For me?

Starter would be that tasty Salad she showed me how to make. Can't remember the name of it, but it has diced Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion, a Red Wine Vinegar and Olive Oil dressing, with Capirs and Croutons for taste. Absolutely delicious! Light as well!

Main course? Pan Fried Lemon Chicken with Garlic. Every bit as good as it sounds. Crispy skin on the Chicken, with a Lemon and Garlic sauce. Starts off being cooked in a pan to brown the Chicken, then bunged in the oven until the Garlic has caramelised. So damned tasty!

Pudding (or Dessert if you're being poncey)... Triple Chocolate Trifle. Made with Creme Fraiche, Choclate Muffins, Morello Cherries, Chocolate Chips, and Kirsch. So good, I want some right bleeding now. Must bug her to get the recipe like!

Your turn to tempt tastebuds the world over... Rules are simple. It must be home cooked, and it must be something your Mum can cook (or could cook for those unfortunate enough to have lost their Mums).

My mom doesn't do starters.

But, for the main course, something we call dogfood. Ground beef mixed with cream of mushroom soup and sour cream, topped with sliced potatoes and shredded cheese, with the flake-apart biscuits on top of that. Cook following the directions for the biscuits.

Since I cook for a large group of people:

Starter: none

Main course: [tonight] Chicken teryiaki with jasmine rice.

Dessert: A couple of Reese's PB cups.

I learned how to cook as a way of surviving the abominations my mother brought forth from the pit of hell she called a kitchen. It's amazing that Nurgle didn't get me much, much earlier. As for what I would make myself, a massive slow-smoked t-bone slathered in BBQ sauce, a baked potato with butter, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and bacon bits.

If she were still alive, Mom would make me:

  • Meatball Casserole

  • Macaroni and Cheese

  • Chocolate Dessert Pizza with icing

  • My wife would make:

  • BBQ Pork Ribs

  • Potato Salad

  • "Super Salad" aka salad bar on a plate

  • A dessert that has a lot of marshmallows.

My mom isn't a bad cook, but I never discovered this thing called "flavor" until I started cooking for myself :p In terms of free meal my mom is cooking (or rather preparing, and my step-dad grilling), probably:

Appetizer - Jalapenos sliced in half, filled with cream cheese and topped with yellow cheese. Grilled til crispy on the outside and a little soft on the inside. I could die every time.

Main course - Pork chops prepared for a long time the oven, slathered in brown gravy (and preferably grilled onion, though my mom would probably be opposed) with home-mashed potatoes with extra butter and heavy seasonings (like a beef rub) added.

Dessert - Chocolate pudding crepes with whipped creme.

I know now what I want her to make for my birthday.

    Worship me.

My Mom too has passed away.
But for a special meal she would have made..
Gumbo to start ( Gumbo is a regional dish,it's a thick rich sort of stew witch often contains shrimp, chicken and sausage...absolutly delicious).
Followed by "Turducken"-basicly a chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey all filled with a spicy dressing.
    with sides of cranberry sauce.
    And for dessert--sweet potatoe pie.

True story about my mother's cooking.

I've got two younger brothers. One year when we were all young children, I must have been about six or seven, we went to a farmhouse hotel in Wales.

The first morning's breakfast my middle brother looks at his plate (cooked English breakfast) and asks, "What are these things?"

The waitress says, "They're sausages, dear."

My brother, "But they're not black!"

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

A beautiful French steak.. ahh so good. Then home made chips to mush into the gorgeous juices and gravy.

French steak is simply steak but cooked for 10 seconds, it basically moos when you slice into it. None of this poncy "I like mine well-done." malarky, it's all about blood.

Mammy Da Boss is best at Irish stew actually, and it's one of my favourites. Though she does a good line in steak and kidney pies too.
So I guess it'd have to be (and this will probably be the most stereotypically Irish post on dakkadakka, forgive me):
    Starter:
Potato cakes with some onions in.

    Main Course:
Irish stew, maybe with dumplings. If not, mash.

    Dessert:
Not common in my house, but apple tart is good. Or apple crumble and custard.

And a pint of guinness to go with it. A different stout would be better, but let's be realistic, it's me mam, I'm lucky if she doesn't buy in budweiser by mistake .

Yes i do , however i dont make sushi .
What i eat really have nothing to do with me liking anime . My grand mother always cook japanese food , and ever since little my grand father always takes me to
japanese restraunts . And its especially easy to make compare to other ethnic food.

    For example i like:
    Thailand : Panang Chicken
    India: Tandoori Chicken
    Middle East : Sawarma

I enjoy food from all over the world.

I was never exposed to ethnic foods as a kid, so I am making sure my daughters are.
Zelda's two faves are Indian and Japanese. Ironically, her favorite sushi roll is the Triforce Roll from Hayward Japan Grill in Hayward, CA.
Spicy tuna and tempura shrimp , topped with avocado.... Mmmmmmmm... Triforce Roll

    OM NOM NOM NOM!

Cabbage? Surely it's got to be boiled until it's nearly yellow, in the same pot as the bacon?

I heard making Sushi is really hard! I've never tried though. I just end up going to china town for it.

    Ah tandoori chicken is nice.

It is fun to watch sushi being made. IIRC, the secret is sticky rice so it doesn't fall apart, and to keep your fingertips moist... But I could be totally wrong.

Tandoori is t3h awesome! I also enjoy Tikk Masala and Vindaloo.
