Sometimes while playing wargames, you will encouter extreemly good luck, harsh bad luck and often plain stupidity. Though they may be decisive in the game we all joke about afterwards. Common examples of this are of your super-expensive HQ who was killed by his plasma pistol blowing up in his face or those fateful words 'anything but a 1'. This thread is so you can share some of theese moments. I have a few.

1) I was playing WHFB, it was a big combat with 2 units of Orcs against 2 units of dwarfs. My black orks suffered 4 wounds. "Never mind," i say "they have a 4+ armour save." The dice came up with four 1s. As a result of this both my units had to take a break test, guess what two 6s and two 6s.(this is true by the way, and, no, i didnt roll four 1s for my run movement). Incredibly bad luck, in fact the chances of this are 1 in 1,679,616!

2) Eldar v Choas. "Right," says my Uncle, "my dreadnought will shoot at your avengers." "Hang on a minute," i say, "hasn't it got the crazed special rule?" (basically this rule means it could either get to shoot the nearest unit or run forward really fast) he rolled a 1 and in meaning his dread opened fire on his possessed, twice. They died and 150 odd points, evaporated in a spectacular fashion.

I have more I will share if this thread continues, so what fate did the Dice Gods give you??

I've mentioned this a few times, but the single worst turn I've ever had occurred on turn 1 of a Planeststrike game. I had a Lord of Change and a Keeper of secrets in a corner of the board. My opponent's 10-man, 80 point Penal Legion squad opens fire on the Lord of Change. My saves are 2 1s, 2 2s and a 5. 270 points taken down by 80. Immediately after his Grey Knights charge my Keeper of Secrets. I roll 4 1s on my hit roll and fail to wound anything, then he gets capped right away. I haven't played Daemons since

As soon as you say "Anything but a one...", You are doomed to fail.

No real dice woes though. I did once see Archaon roll all ones to wound when fighting a skink preist.

Things like that can be very fustrating, depending on which side your on. I remember when my 2 ork boys took out asurmen. He missed all but one of his attacks then failed to wound. I managed to hit with 6 of my 8 attacks then wound with all of those. Never underestimate the power of da boyz!

My last game of 4th edition codex IG I started turn 1 aginist a necron player with his elusive monolith. My HQ took the first shot of the game with his lascannon at the monolith. First shot of the game, first turn... roll to hit... 6 roll to pen... 6 roll on damage chart... 6 roll for explosion radius... 6. My opponet had only on monolith and had a squad in Necron reserve. It was the ONLY time I ever blew one of those things up with my lascannon. Needless to say, it was a fun game.

As for the plasma... first round Ard' boys. I had Straken take out a hammer head and he was hiding in its remains getting ready to take out the other on his next turn. With this gone, my tanks would be safe. Start of the next turn Straken fires his plasma pistol to see if he can just gun it down instead of moving out of cover. He rolls a 1 then fails his save. Huge cost as I could have just run up and smashed the thing without a problem. (It was immoblized...) It was all downhill from there.

Ha, in contrast I also had a 5-man Missile launcher Havoc squad stave off a dual charge from two 20-strong Boyz squads Over the next several turns I lost one man and managed to knock both squads down to jack and SA them! My saves were insane. The visual is still in my head of my Chaos Marines swinging the missile launchers like baseball bats, knocking Orks away

3rd game of this year's 'ard Boys semi final. My oppenant and I are on table two- if one of us gets a massacre and table one ties we win, if either of us gets a major victory & someone loses at table one we get second place. I am playing against a space marine list with my Salamanders and the game has not gone well for me at all.

I am completly out of Melta and he has two land raiders left. He has scouts and a tac squad inside the land raiders, only a turn away from the objective. Marneus Calgar and his terminator friends have just killed one of my tac squads trying to get to the center objective. Now the only scoring unit I have left alive is 1 lonely tac marine that has gone to ground on the center objective. The only other units I have alive is a group of thunderhammer/Stormshield terminators blocked by one of his landraiders and Vulkan, who has taken two wounds.

With the death of my tac squad Marneus gets to consolidate. He can either consolidate towards the center objective (and be within 3 inches) or go after Vulkan. He decides to go after Vulkan.

I ask if his turn is completed. He says "Yes" I take a d6 and say "To see if the game goes on" and roll a 2 with the store owner watching. He did not fully read the scenerio and know that the third game was random length. I win a major victory and take 2nd place in the semi finals.

Sometimes the game comes down to one lucky roll of the dice, along with reading the scenerio.

In 5th edition Fantasy I had a unit of 10 Skavenslaves hold up a Chaos lord and his 4 mounted knights for the large part of a game, about 3 turns in total and then the game was over. The poor blighters totalling about 50 points of troops were charged by a chaos lord and his bad boys, totalling about 6-700 points. They passed their leadership test for fear (they only had Ld 5 or something pitiful) and the Chaos Lord and Knights fumbled their attacks, lots of 1s. The Skaven Slaves didn't stand a chance really, though a nearby Poisoned Wind Globadier did lend a hand and gas one of the Knights. Anyway, combat went on for about a turn an a half with the Skaven slaves being whittled away very slowly and lots more 1s being rolled by the Chaos Knights. Eventually the Skavenslaves failed a morale check, the Chaos Knights tried to pursue, but again pathetic dice rolls meant they couldn't charge them down. In the following turn the Skavenslaves took the Ld test with the heavy modifiers required for losing over half the unit. But what do you know? They roll snake eyes, and not only pass the test but immediately charge the Knights and keep them tied up for the final turn!

Ah, the memories.

The good:
The Empire vs Bretonnians
Landing a Halfling Hot-pot projectile smack on the head of the Bretonnian General leading a Death Star Lance Formation filled with characters, in spite of his prayers on turn 1. The proud Duke was crushed beneath the Cauldron, the only casualty. Howerver, the ensueing 5th edition panic test (general killed) was failed by the Death Star and all that remained for the rest of the game were the Bowmen of Bergerac, who decided to make a stand. My Hot-pot had always been widely innacurate, so much that it missed the tower and hit Duke l'Etoille d'Morte.

The bad:
Empire vs. High Elves
There stood a much convenient hill for my artillery and fire base for a castle formation... I packed a lot of anti-magic so I took the risk. Knowing it was a big one still.
There was this spell, you know, the Slayer of High Ground Advantages...
Now, of course, getting this spell was not certain, and required 3 power cards to succeed. With a good deal to the player who faces it, it can be dispelled, boost the chances for that and you're pretty safe.

Turn one, the High Elf moves first and magic is cheap, I get one card, he gets two. casts Assault of Stone (make a hill take a devasting promenade, like the Elves call it), with just a single card. It could only be one. No preparation could prevent it from happening the first turn... with so low the Winds of Magic (3)

For some reason I'm reminded of this.

RIMMER: So there we were at 2:30 in the morning; I was beginning to wish
I had never come to cadet training school. To the south lay water --
there was no way we could cross that. To the east and west two armies
squeezed us in a pincer. The only way was north; I had to go for it
and pray the Gods were smiling on me. I picked up the dice and threw
two sixes. Caldecott couldn't believe it. My go again; another two
sixes!

LISTER: Rimmer, what's wrong with you? Don't you realize that no one is
even slightly interested in anything you're saying? You've got this
major psychological defect which blinds you to the fact that you're
boring people to death! How come you can't sense that?

RIMMER: Anyway I picked up the dice again... Unbelievable! Another two
sixes!

LISTER: Rimmer!

RIMMER: What?

LISTER: No one wants to know some stupid story about how you beat your
Cadet School Training Officer at Risk.

RIMMER: Then -- disaster! I threw a two and a three; Caldecott picked up
the dice and threw snake eyes -- I was still in it.

LISTER: Cat, can you talk to him?.

CAT: What?

RIMMER: Anyway, to cut a long story short I threw a five and a four which
beat his three and a two, another double six followed by a double four
and a double five. After he'd thrown a three and a two I threw a six
and a three.

CAT: Man, this guy could bore for his country!

LISTER: What I want to know, is how the smeg can you remember what dice
you threw at a game you played when you were seventeen?

RIMMER: I jotted it down in my Risk campaign book. I always used to do
that so I could replay my moments of glory over a glass of brandy in
the sleeping quarters. I ask you, what better way is there to spend a
Saturday night?

CAT: Ya got me.

RIMMER: So a six and a three and he came back with a three and a two.

LISTER: Rimmer, can't you tell the story is not gripping me? I'm in a
state of non-grippedness, I am completely smegging ungripped. Shut the
smeg up.

RIMMER: Don't you want to hear the Risk story?

LISTER: That's what I've been saying for the last fifteen minutes.

RIMMER: But I thought that was because I hadn't got to the really
interesting bit...

LISTER: What really interesting bit?

RIMMER: Ah well, that was about two hours later, after he'd thrown a
three and a two and I'd thrown a four and a one. I picked up the
dice...

LISTER: Hang on Rimmer, hang on... the really interesting bit is exactly
the same as the dull bit.

RIMMER: You don't know what I did with the dice though, do you? For all
you know, I could have jammed them up his nostrils, head butted him on
the nose and they could have blasted out of his ears. That would've
been quite interesting.

LISTER: OK, Rimmer. What did you do with the dice?.

RIMMER: I threw a five and a two.

LISTER: And that's the really interesting bit?

RIMMER: Well it was interesting to me, it got me into Irkutsk.

We were playing apocalypse and it was the start of turn 2. Our opponents were JUST out of charge range, so this turn was going to be critical in shooting.
Our opponents use the 'Twilight' (lol) special DE rule, that means it's night-fighting for one of our shooting phases. We have to roll 2D6 X2.
I roll for the team. Snake-eyes. (we won in the end though)

Another funny moment was when a mob of boyz with a joining Warboss were charging right through my lines. My basilisk lines them up (again) when they are about 10 inchs away after they fleeted. So hopeful am I that this may very well rip them apart, I move my inquistor and Platoon command closer to charge range.

The basilisk missed. And the marker landed directly on top of my inquisitor and junior officer. That was end-game.

My latest one was while playing fantasy in a tournament about 2 months ago.

My 6 wide chaos knights charge a block of skeletons, and kill a whopping 1 skeleton, they then fail their break check. They roll a 17 for their flee move, popping through a unit of chaos hounds and a unit of chaos warriors. The general is near so everyone gets re-rolls on 8's, I fail 4 leadership 8 roles in a row, the hounds break and pop through my generals chaos warrior block, who then proceed to fail 2 more panic checks, run away and pop through the hound unit that just ran, the chaos warriors that fled, pop through the chaos knights that originally caused the panic check, when all was said and done the entire right hand side of my army had routed.

We had played campaign, Eldar vs. Witch Hunters. With an even amount of losses and wins on both sides we were ready for the main battle. Not apocalypse, but a solid 2000pts.

After a gruelling match I was left with an Inquisitor my Canoness, and a ragtag remnant of storm troopers and sisters flooding into the main strongpoint of the eldar defence.

It really was cintematic. My sorry remnant of an army tore through thier ranks, felling and torching eldar left and right, but try as I might Eldrad (that dick) narrowly avoided the fray, fleeing the building with one wound left.

I can imagine that cintematic moment as my Inquisitor and Canoness vengefully look for the mastermind behind this, as Eldrad staggered out the building, bleeding and holding his side. He leans against the wall, sighs in relief and looks up a 20 lasguns staring straight him. I can imagine the growl of the commissar "No prisoners." and the snap/crack of those lasguns. Yes, we got him.

Satisfiying Kills

While playing the battle of skull pass ages ago i got my first relly cool kill. My dads troll (undamaged) charged my Dragon slayer, i fended off all its attacks and then hit and wounded with all mine, he didnt make a single regen. save.

Others include when my ork nob (with powerklaw) took out my a rune priest that costed around 130pts. And when my lone striking scorpion exarch (with scorpions claw) charged a 150pt chaos lord, firing its shruiken catapault, inflicting a wound only to survive all its attacks and proceed to finish it off with its powerklaw. It was an assault from behind as well. So cinematic!!

I went to buy some green stuff today at my local Gw and asked about any tournament bad luck hed had/seen he told about when he'd once entered 40K doubles with a friend.

They were playing Tau + Eldar against a SM + IG. The space marine player had scarily bad luck during the game he:

1)Deep stricked both his 2 termie units into models and rolled a 1 or 2 for both.

2)His assault marines assaulted some fire warriors but were forced to fleee after the score came out as 1-0 to the fire warriors.

3)His dread's plasma cannon scaterred 12" from his original target taking of all but one of his commander's wounds!!

The result was Tau + eldar- solid victory, but apparently the Ig did quite well.

It seems that whenever I assault Tau those pesky fire warriors tie up whatever assaults them for more than a few turns - Wraiths, terminators, regular marines, or even a bloody carnifex, they seem to act as damn good roadblocks.

But at the same time I've sweeping advanced the same Tau player's commander (and his retinue, I'm guessing in total it's 350 points or something) from killing just one or two shield drones that it balances out

Ah, those were the days...when termies fled from a single figure...who would no doubt have had an idiotic grin upon his face...

(The same guy then went on to kill 3 wrathguard with a single frag shot in another game and many other acts of heroism)

"Good game guys, now lets hit the showers"
