First off, if this is in the wrong forum please do move it, but since I wanted News I figured it was the right place to ask the question

Now, to my question:

Is the Fortress of Redemption a splash release or not? The "Tyranid Battleforce" have already begun derailing with posters claiming to know that it is/isn't, so I was hoping someone had some concrete evidence pro or con.

Really liked the set, so had been planning on getting one come january, but may be forced into speeding that up if it's removed earlier than that.

Cheers

Yes, it is a limited release item. Here in the US I know independent retailers have already been offered allocations from their Trade Reps. This will sell out, so if you want one I would pre-order with your local game store.

When I asked a manager at GW about this earlier today he laughed and said no. If it's limited, I'm guessing it's limited the way that Space Hulk was limited, like maybe to 100,000 or something like that. This kit is produced from brand new molds and GW is not in the business of producing expensive molds and then retiring them before they make money on them.

I've also seen that independent sellers are calling this a limited splash item. Maybe their allotments are limited, but there have got to be more than a few of these kits about for GW to make money on them just like other large kits like the Baneblade or Stompa. Perhaps it's just GW retaining the bulk of sales for itself to maximize profits, but there's no way this kit is going to be hard to get, just hard to get from certain places.

Again, not much in terms of "proof". No link to any GW statements or something like that. But feck it, you've convinced me that I need to act now

But this offers me with a couple of other questions. Does this mean that the Imperial Sector and Imperial Strongpoint are also splash releases that will be gone before january? And why doesn't Maelstromgames list the Fortress of redemption?

EDIT: Hadn't seen Brass Scorpions reply before I posted... So you think january should be no problem?

The Strongpoint and Sector sets are limited, but they comprise existing product that is still sold separately. Those sets are bundle deals, not unique products.

The Fortress of Redemption is an all new kit. No way they are cutting a production run of that to make it hard to buy. Also note that GW has not stated anywhere in their online store that this is a limited quantity item. More and more this seems like a case where GW is just limiting the number people can buy from independent discounters, but the kit itself should not be that hard to get in the total scheme of things.

New info! It's not the quantities that are limited, but the amount of time it will be offered. GW plans to offer it for 3 months and then only bring it out again in the future for the holidays. I ordered one today and took advantage of the free shipping to have it sent home instead of to the store in hopes I might get it a wee bit before the release date.

The source on this didn't specify, but I assumed he meant from the date they first began selling it on the website a few weeks ago. That would fit with the idea of selling it when it is likely to sell best, during the last several weeks of the year and perhaps early into the next. Of course, large expensive items have a way of hanging around a bit on shelves in some stores. I still see Imperial Sector sets here and there from last year's release on that item. A few years ago when they first offered the red and green army cases, the green ones sold out in a few weeks and remnants of the red cases were still available in some stores for nearly a full year. And plenty of GW stores still have copies of Space Hulk.

Well, I can see why GW would have it for a short time, but then release it for longer. People will pounce on it now, and those who don't will buy it later.

Here is a little clarity on the subject. There was a limited amount of these produced. In the US the amount made is allocated between GW retail stores, GW Direct, and trade (independent retail) based on percentage of sales. Once in a while if one area does not sell through in a certain amount of time and another one does, they may re-allocate the remaining (independent stores usually always sell through their allotment first) but this is not always the case.
Now that being said, this is a plastic kit and if is sells really well we may see it again during an apocalypse release or next holiday season, but for the foreseeable future this is limited.

Ditto on that! Seeing the individual components and how they fit together will be interesting and fun.

Really, the idea that a large expensive kit with all new molds is going to be "limited" is beyond comprehension. After speaking with someone at the company who deals with these issues directly, they are calling this a "splash" but the word limited was not used. This may be offered as a "splash" only for about three months, but it appears they're going to take as many orders for it during that time as they can get.

I looked through the GW website, and all the limited releases have a date in their description saying when they will be avaliable to, the Fortress doesn't have one, so i doubt it is going to be limited

Or they sacked the clairvoyance department and they don't know when it's going to run out.

Does anyone know when the Imperial Sector and Imperial Strongpoint will disappear? Are these limited in the same way as the fortress, or are they just here until Christmas?

Well the Strongpoint and Sector have been availalbe on the GW website for quite a long time as direct only items, with the odd old-stock item appearing in GW stores.

Their 'return' for X-Mas is for all stores and stockists, after which I suspect they'll return to direct only.

You can expect such "holiday" releases to be on the website probably for about 3 months total. They will likely be removed sometime shortly after Jan. 1. Of course, there will still be some sitting on store shelves, but for online purchasing, best jump on it before it's removed.

A splash release generally means it will be available in store until initial stock sells out, then will be available Direct Only.

And like the Terrain Bundles, re-released to Shop Stock every so often.

I can't see GW going through the expense of producing molds for a large-scale plastic kit and then limiting it's availability. Would they do that with the Baneblade ?

This isn't like the "splash" or limited availability of the Imperial Sector / City boxes because the items in those can be bought as individual kits.

I can only see this as being a "splash" or "limited" at Christmas due to demand overwhelming the initial production run.
