I own a 360 but honestly wouldn't mind having a PS3... you can't get both can you?
There's a lot I like with the 360. The achievement system I think is a fun way to show off your epeen. The controller isn't too bad. There are some awesome titles on the 360 like Halo Game #4738. Its cool that you can play older xbox games on it as well... such as classics as Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2.
I own both. I've had the PS3 since it came out and the 360 since last Christmas. The only game that I have played a significant amount on both (>100 hours on each system) is Fallout 3. My conclusion is that the PS3 is the better console for single-player games. I'm not familiar with Live (I have no intention of ever paying a subscription for access to online content on top of my internet bill much less paying $100 for the 360's wireless adapter) so I cannot speak to that. Also, in the interests of full disclosure, I am not a Halo fan.
To be a little flippant, ask your self this: which console would Batman buy? Obviously the PS3.

A slum in scotland... the only shinty with a computer!
what you need to do is look at the games that the consoles have, and whats important to you.
the 360 and the PS3 both have good parts and bad, the 360 is cheeper! so you could get more games to try out on it. but thats just 1 view...
the ps3 is graphicaly better, but playing one at my friends this is only novaly better, and the graphical glitches are annoying(might just be his games or console, i dont know)
both go online if you can be bothered getting a wite/addapter for them, but the 360 requires a £40 a year cost(not sure about what it would be fr you) but the support is better compaired with what iv seen of the ps3s online thing.
personaly i would go for the 360, but as i said, go look at the games(meny are out on both) see what "exclusive" games you prefer and go for that 1. and remember whatever you get youll regret it and want the other 1... welll in a few months or so anyway.

The standard 360 is only $50 cheaper than the PS3 (the Elite is the same price). I would recommend against the Arcade ($100 less than the PS3) because it has no hard drive and it will cost you $60-$135 to get one. A hard drive, btw, is necessary if you ever want to play DLC.
In my experience, FO3 was glitchier on the 360 than the PS3. And even after downloading the game to my hard drive, loading times remained much longer than on the PS3.
Unlike the 360, PS3 has built-in wireless.
Oh and Sony now uses the Trophy system to compete with Microsoft's Achievements.

its not opinion rightly enough, its FACT.
you get a memory card with the 360, and that works fine to start with, now shh, this need not be an idiotic argument over a thing that is ment to bring fun.

What? Actually, wrong again. My fiance got me the Arcade for Christmas last year. It was a great gift (I had really wanted to play Mass Effect) but the 256MB memory card could not even handle one part of the FO3 DLC, hence having to spend another $60 on the thing. The next problem was trying to get Mothership Zeta which was only available through Live. Even if I wanted to pay money to access the opportunity to pay more money (in terms of DLC, that's what Live is), I couldn't because I'd have to take my Xbox and 40" TV downstairs to plug directly into an ethernet cable because the stupid thing doesn't have wireless. Now, I could get a wireless adapter for it for another $100 but then I'd be at $360 (coincidence?) in the thing and might as well have bought the Elite. So you see, there is actually no savings with the 360, especially now that the 120GB PS3 is $300.
Posting this is not an "argument" nor is it an attempt to make up OP's mind for him (what a weird thing to suggest in the first place) but rather my experience the system, which is directly on point to the question he asked RATHER than a pack of pointless insulting gibberish like "STFU already!" So until the word "MOD" is written below your username, check your ego at the login page. I am now taking your advice and ignoring the rest of your silliness so that this thread can get back on track.
Bluray player is really good, beats many standard players out there atm.
Its a bit more stable than the xbox, 75% of my friends who have xbox got the red blinky.. never heard of a ps3 that acted up without being kicked around.
The exclusive titles are neat.
Built in bluetooth is great, no connection errors, ever.
wireless built in..
I always have liked the ps3 controller best, sixaxis just sweetens the deal.
Harddrive that can be upgraded pretty easily.
not a whole lot of demos on psn, but being beefed up every other week.
The newer 360s do not have the same mal rate as the older ones. There have been some improvements made to the design over time.
I know of 2 PS3's that went under w/o being kicked around; neither system is immune to malfunction. Buying a PS3 is not a guarantee that nothing will happen.
As for the graphics being better it is all hogwash. It isn't up to the machines, it is up to the programmers. Some games look a tiny better on one, some look slightly better on the other.
If you have the money at the moment I would recommend the Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 set. If you wanted MW2, it is a great deal and you save a good deal of money. If you don't care about MW2 it isn't as a good a deal but it is still a descent deal. it comes with:
Elite 360 system
2 Wireless Controllers
Modern Warfare 2
250 gig HDD
headset

I haven't had any trouble with my 360 other than freezes after hours of continuous play which also happens with the PS3. To reiterate, however, my Arcade is fairly new (1 year old) while the PS3 was from original release. I've put quite a few miles on it (easily 500hrs+ gaming, half from Oblivion, and many many many more as a DVD/Bluray player) and it's as solid as ever. (touch wood)
That list is so old it isn't at all helpful.(sorry had to say it)
I don't know about the technical specifications, but here's an update for current sytems and models.

XBOX 360 Controller:

All in all it also comes down to what your friends have and if you want to play with them online. After all, if your friends play on XBOX and you have a PS3, what good will it do for you?
This discussion is too heated. both people who own a ps3 and an xbox 360 are very stubborn, so asking randoms off the internet isn't going to help at all.
from personal experience, i prefer xbox 360 controller due to its size (big hands, ps3 controllers so tiny), i prefer the xbox360 games (GoW for example).
i don't find the big deal about paying subscription for xbox live (which is good, so your not wasting your money) but that is my opinion.
from someone elses experience, my mate had a ps3 and switched to xbox due to his preference.
oh and the RRoD, has been reduced dramatically since xbox is working towards no flashes of death (and if you do get one, with warranty they replace it for free).
and ps3's do break down, i have known several people.
As was stated, that was an old (pre-elite and processor change) comparison. Most of the stuff listed on the PS3 side doesn't exist on the PS3 any more either, unless you find the original launch systems.
Forget the systems. Look at which one has more of the games you want and get that one.
