I saw this and it got me thinking. I know I knew way too little about sex until I was a teenager, and even then somethings didn't click until I turned 18 and got to experience it for myself. I feel I could have benefited from knowing sooner without causing me any harm or turning me into some kind of freak. When did you really "get it," and was it too soon? When do you think it's appropriate to teach kids the whole thing?

I feel its a natural biological function that everyone (besides, priests, nuns, and neckbeards) will experience. I also feel that people should understand the results of there actions before engaging in it (i.e. STDs, pregnancy).

So I would take the average age of sexual experimentation, and subtract 2 years and begin teaching then.

In the Usa this would be around 3rd grade.

Sex education is a complex and messy business in which evidence based decision making is valuable.

I believe we should follow the same model as the Dutch and Scandis, which results in later age of starting sexual activity, and lower teenage pregnancy and STD rates.

First given Sex Education at the age of 10, when I lived in Scotland.

I am now 29, free from STI, STD and Children.

My experience would seem to suggest it very much works to tell kids about stuff at an early age.

Oh, and the earlier you teach kids (not tell them, teach them) the less time the little sods have to be told various myths... Myths like...

You can't get pregnant on your first time
You can't get pregnant if you do it standing up

You know, really quite idiotic rubbish that breed in pools of ignorance.

Teach them as soon as they are able to understand the subject (10 is about right) but before they start to experience it through other means (Porn Mags etc)

QFT! Do you as a parent want to *teach them or do you want them to learn in the school yard.

To demythify (I just invented another word!) a subject, is to rob it of Rebellious actions.

Sure, you can never stamp out Teenage Pregnancy as accidents and idiocy will still happen, but it can be lowered, as can the infection rates.

The advantage of schools doing Sex Ed is that trained teachers can do the lessons, relieving embarrassed parents of the necessity.

It also does an end run around parents who don't want their children to learn about sex.

Knowledge is power.

In this age where kids are exploited and molested (deleted by the Modquisition to get thread back on track) sex ed is something that can't be set aside because of attitudes the grandma in the OP has.

I go with Ender's Game here, kids are much more intelligent and mature or at least capable thereof than society gives them credit for.

Agreed on all points.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I find it funny that the people against sex ed books are the same people who are against abortions.

"lets not tell them how they can get pregnant, and THEN not let them get out of it, after we kept them ignorant of the consequences!"

Those are the people who tend to think of sex as fundamentally sinful. Indulging in it is wrong, so it's right that girls should be punished.

You're presuming and falsely. I know many who are anti abortion by pro sex ed.

well yea, that may be true, but in the article one of the primary supporters of the old skank is an anti-abortion group.

Those are the sensible ones, if you don't want abortions you should know how (not) to get pregnant. It helps a lot better than vagaries about birds and bees and big lectures on abstaining from... eh... "that thing a man does when he loves a woman"

I learned about sex fairly young as I grew up in and around Amsterdam. If you wanted to go certain places in Amsterdam, you could not easily avoid the windowsills of the Red Light District. As a little boy, I found these barely clothed women in the window a bit freaky and weird... And fat, most of them... I knew what a hooker was and did when I was 5 or 6.

But then again, I never learned about marihuana 'till much later.... I don't visit hookers but I smoke... Now, if I only had known about that when I was 5...

Goes to show, you can't wait to long before telling your kids about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. I had rock 'n roll and drugs way before I had sex

I like to add that I remember the book refered to in the OP article being at my library when I was 13-14... I never dared rent it (and I knew that stuff allready), but did sneak a peek once, with a red face (more the topic than the contents- eee! sex! Naughty! a proper kid's attitude)... As an addult I'd say it's a very usefull, sensible and proper book for kids of the target age group and Grandma's is being an ass (as in: stubborn donkey) and a vigilante censor.

At appropriate ages and in appropriate amounts. As a parent you can learn quick what the edge is to gross them out.

Then you run screaming across it hahahahaha!

And Frazz is correct.

Perhaps the answer would be to have a seperate class structure where the Kid can have lessons about the Birds and the Bees when the parents feel it's correct and appropriate.

Kid gets educated, Parents get some say, and lets face it, kids talk to each other. The Kid getting the education can then help with some better informed discussion with his peers.

Oh, the stupid sex-jokes of elementary school come to mind here... It's bound to 'cause questions with more "sheltered kids"... Not a lot of those I heard stand up in the translation to English though... I can think of one:
"Have you ever been wet?" (positive? bwhahaha! you're a girl/you've been horny! teehee)

and of course more international: "Do you like Fishdicks?"

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

My first sex ed class in middle school consisted of my teacher openning a fifth of jack and popping in debbie does dallas. She was take shots and discribing what was going on i.e. "She's faking." "Guys never last take long." I think I learned more in that class that any of the clinical sex ed classes after. The best thing she said was, "Trust me kids, condoms are cheaper than diapers. And, no it is not ok when it burns when you pee." I just remembered another pearl of wisdom from her year later, "A bottle of jack, a coat hanger and a towel and you will not have to deal with the clinic."

Lest say she did not work there very much longer after she went into rehab. I was sad since she was a much better person and teacher when she was completely smashed out of her gourd.
