Batallion, Army Book, plus a couple of characters. That ought to get you going in the right direction.

Yep, a couple battalions, a couple characters(if either of you are interested in Orcs and Goblins or Dwarves, I suggest Skullpass replace one of the battalion/character purchases as it supplies units and characters), plus the books have you both started and able to play a few games together.

Why are you buying the models? If she wants to get into the game then help her along buying in small amounts of the units she likes. then play games as she progresses helping her decide fi she likes the game before buying a huge army.

I'm not sure why you are spending your money on her army is all. Surely you can buy your army and paint next to her as she paints her models.

I have two options for you...
1. Buy the army book proxi the models so she can get a feel for the game.
2. Get into warmachine the starter boxes rock and you could get you and her a playable force for the cost of the batallion box (quick start rules are included)
that way you can both learn the rules keep it slow paced and fun for her... My wife who I never thought I would see push models around a table loves warmachine

I agree with the 'start small' sentiment.

Also if there is a GW nearby they should be happy to run intro games to see if she likes it....

you still haven't exactly defined why she can't pay for her own models.

Are you sure it's just neat? I would classify it more as neato burrito. Perhaps with a side of cool beans.

good way to start dark elves...

spearhead+battalion+book

especially since the spearhead is 45% off at my store right now

but really, good set of characters and core choices with a little spice thrown in...

start off with small games, and let the models, not numbers, make decisions for her

She might just be giving you hints that she likes the fluff of the dark elves... which means your in for a lifestyle change

Gifts are fine but as said start small, no point buying her an army if she's not 100% sure she's getting into the game.

My reason fro asking why are you paying for it was because you'd asked for your own army suggestions and I was confused why you would be buying her models if she has her own money was all.

Maybe if you're doing a gift buy her a HQ and troops box. Let her buy herself another unit and work from there. No point spending £100 right away and it means since she's put some cash behind it she'll be keener to decide if going to keep playing.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

*Sigh*

This is why 40K is so much of a better starter game, especially for people that may not end up being entirely interested in the game. Small armies in WHFB just don't work properly.
Anyone here ever lose a game of Skull Pass with Goblins? Not here...

I second (or third or whatever) getting her a codex and Hero blister and Core boxes. Maybe drop the money for a battalion since Black Friday is coming up.

One thing I would suggest though, is plan on adopting or selling the army should she decide she doesn't like it. Also, study the hell out of the rules. If she is anything like my wife, she will get really cranky if the rules don't make sense, and you making mistakes will only make her more frustrated and likely to take it out on you.

first off and many would probably agree with me or disagree if your a teenager then dont do it im warning you. If your younger then 25 DONT DO IT buy her one reg't box and some building materials with a core book then say ok here's how you file, and clean your models. Then say heres how you paint them and do it step by step WITH HER NOT FOR HER REMEMBER. If at the end say ok all this stuff is a gift, but you now need to do it on your own to get the feel for the hobby and the game, then start by doing small skirmishes with her. The big thing is do an initial investment of a hobby knife, files, clippers, and a cheap brush for her, plus a small box reg't that way you are only out 50-60 bucks. I garuntee if she is really into it she will start buying more after the fact, but more often then not you tell most women or more gf's to do the work with it and they stop and never ask you again If they don't then start saving because rents gonna be hard to come by as you both spend all your money on models instead of one person.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!
