I'm certain that at some point everyone on this site has had to justify the cost to someone, either friend or loved one. So far I have not come into an argument that can convince them without a long drawn-out debate, if anyone has any guidelines on ending this never ending cycle please post.

Have you explained that other people have way more expensive hobbies. Granted this hobby can get costly but i see it comparable to paintball. Everyone has a hobby and as long as you are happy with it then it really shouldnt matter.

Thats because you cant technically justify the cost of warhammer. You just do it because you like it.

They're all made in Britain, and the pound is stronger than the dollar. Also, consider the care and planning that goes into the design of each model, and the cost of the fine-quality plastics/pewter (or resin, depending on where you are getting your models).
They're gonna cost.

That's the thing, many expensive hobbies have more to show for it, where as in warhammer 40 bucks gets you what others see as styalised army men. Also people generaly don't care if you say that it is expensive to make.

Honestly, there is no "justification" for the cost of Warhammer/40K minis and kits,so you can't argue a point from that perspective (other than,GW is a business and that's the price tag they have chosen).
Trying to get "outsiders" to understand why we spend so much on "little plastic men" can become a pointless endever, ultimitly I just tell any one who ask that I do it becuase I chose to.

You shouldn't have to justify a hobby. People have hobbies of fixing up cars or flipping houses and that could range in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Paintball is a crazy expensive hobby, for a decent gun and no gear at all, you are looking at about 400$. High end probably 1000$+ or maaaybe 750$ish.
Combine that with gear and your looking about another 100-150$ at least, nice gear maybe 200$+.
For playing you also need to buy paint and if you shoot a lot you could be looking at 50$+ a weekend. If you go 12 times in a year that's 600$. The hobby (if you just started) could easily cost you 1000$+ in the first year.
This year I've spent maybe 500-600$ on wargaming and I've got a 2000+ point army and have a nice paint collection.
I've spent what a paintballer will probably expend on paint alone in a year, and I have something to show for it.

Agreed with Ezeek i was just a casual paintballer. Hmm... even that can get really expensive seeing it wrote down like that but i would play every week and spend around $40-$50 on paint and that does add up. That is just as bad ,expense wise, as smoking.

The cost of the models is the same as the cost of any other model....no really it is mostly. A warhammer tank costs around $35-50, the same thing you would pay for a model of a WW2 era tank or airplane.

Well you have many options that you can go with.
The first being that your totally insane and love to play with toys.
The second option is just compare to other hobby, whether it is Magic or another modeling hobby.
Third option is to lie and say that your an artist and you do modeling to make money.
I know its not much but as everyone else said, its definitely a hobby that takes time and money.

I go with the idea that, (Well, assuming you are an adult) if you are making the money, hell, you can spend it on what you want. As long as I'm not taking in over the top, a kit once every 3 weeks or so is reasonable.
Now, if you don't have a job (I.E. you are in school) then simply state that the hobby is more than just mini's. The hobby is a socially enriching experience in which you, the common, dare I say "nerd" or "War-Gamer" can hang out with old friends or make new friends through this hobby. Which is more than you'll ever get out of an Xbox 360, or World of Warcraft.

I'm not nearly good enough of a painter to use that excuse. =p
If you think your hobby or any hobby requires an excuse to a friend or loved one instead of an invitation, it sounds like the conversation you're having isn't a very friendly one. I've never felt the need to try justifying my hobby to anyone.

Although it costs a bit to start with, after you buy and paint your models they have no running costs- no power bill, no subscription renewals, nothing. As long as you can front the bill to start with (and lets face it, we are paying for the time it takes to design these models and the entire 40k universe, not really the models themselves) you have them forever, and they cost you nothing from then on in.
