Ask how much they spent on x last year. Where x can be anything from shoes to beer to pet toys. It shouldn't be too hard to find something that in your opinion is a waste of money.
The trick here is to point out not that they waste just as much money but that people place different values on experiences.
For you Warhammer is well worth the money for the experience.

Shoes? Women are wierd about shoes. They can get very defensive about needing lots of shoes. Beer? That's a rental fee, and often a pricey one at that... Pets? You're *feeding* something! IMO, if you want your Toys to look good, Cigarettes are the best things to have someone else justify - horribly unhealthy and incredibly expensive, with nothing to show for it afterwards. ____ Time at Gentlemen's Clubs is great, but wives and GFs get really pissy over money spent there!

I actually think Warhammer and 40k is a good value for the money. Granted, DBA and other historicals are an even better value but that's a whole different discussion.
If I buy a box set of figures it's going to take time to put them together, time to paint them, and I'll get time playing with them. Add in the time thinking about army lists and background fluff and the added benefit of socializing with people over the hobby and all of a sudden I'm spending a great deal of time on a $400 investment (I'm going with $400 as that seems to be the median cost I've paid for most armies).

Going to the movies a couple of times a month (I know several people who do this) is easily more expensive, and yet again gives you nothing in the end, other than having seen a bunch of plot holes.
Computer games in general tend to require having a reasonably high-end computer, which tends to cost at least $1000, often twice that... and they have to be replaced every few years in order to keep up with hardware requirements.
Warhammer is more expensive than I'd like it to be, but many people I know have worse habits. For that matter, my diet coke habit costs hundreds of dollars a year...

Just compare it to other hobbies.
My motorcycle cost $16,000, before any after-market parts. Riding it costs extra.
Tickets to a movie for 2, plus popcorn & soda can run $40. Tickets to a concert are $60+, to a football game is $80 for nosebleed seats. These are fleeting three-hour things that you have nothing to show for afterwards (unless you buy the t-shirt, for another $40+).
Pretty much any musical instrument is going to run you several hundred, if not thousand.
A handgun will run you several hundred. Bullets are extra, and are only usable once.
Hookers, at least the ones worth snorting cocaine off their asses, are going to be a minimum of $1000/hour. The cocaine is extra.
Stuff costs money. It's why you work. If your bills are paid, you shouldn't have to justify what you spend the money on to anyone.

Hell, if you're a hardcore Slanneshi player, you should be able to do all of them at the same time.

My PC is very much high end, and the combined cost of its parts is about $1200. Likewise, with proper planning and smart parts selection, you can keep upgrades very, very cheap.

This would be an interesting argument with a girlfriend. I think it would probably end in badly, ie;slap to my face.

I just asked my wife if she'd rather I blow a grand on a hooker or on a new army. She said that if we went to a country where it was legal, we should get the hooker... (No face slapped. And, she added, 'cause you haven't finished painting the Forgeworld that I got you for your birthday')

This.
If you feel the need to justify it, you probably need to have a look at how much you're spending, and decide whether or not you can actually afford it.
If you can, there's no need to justify it.
