Usually, when I draw Space Marines the people think that they are some robots, then I tell that they are men in armor. When I draw Eldar I tell them that they are aliens.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Well i would say show them a few painted models to show them your hobby. The guy that introduced me to the hobby showed me an old GW catalog with all the models in it. Then you explain it is a game that is like risk and chess only with individual characteristics for each model.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

When I introduced a friend into the hobby i found some common traits between a intrest of his (stargate SG1) and 40k, then we got talking about the backstory then I showed him my guard and he got hooked.

Give him a copy of Dawn of War. I had been playing that for ages when I saw some of my friends SM and Guard and that's what got me. At least computer games are a little more mainstream than little plastic toy soldiers with imaginary bullets.

You just couldn't handle the truth. God knows why anyone would want that cookie anyway. I can only imagine what foul demons possess such a thing as to make it stand on its side like that. I prefer my cookies horizontal and without eternal damnation. - Ridcully

Either that or take a 4+ cover save from all of GW's red tape blocking LoS to the way to play it. - Kitzz

That's exactly how I got into 40k too. The computer games are definitely one of the better ways to get people to try the hobby.

I concur with DoW, but painted miniatures are simply the best way.

The thing about DoW is that it doesn't depict 40k gameplay as well, so someone who expects buttloads of win from 1 Land Raider will be surprised when 1 Multi Melta blows it to shreds.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Hmm hard one.

spin offs are a good way tailsman, space hulk, gorkamorka, BFG etc. introduction to the galaxy without such a complex set of rules/too many models

its a bit like when people drop phrases from 40k into conversation, then you know.

I got my friend into it by dropping phrases and showing him some comics by Mr. Culexus on Deviantart.com now when he sees me he says things like "For Teh Emprah!" and "Khoooorne!"

I got hooked with a combination of soulstorm and a few painted models.
Ironically the person who had the painted models wasn't a player.

Cheese Elemental-Love does not bloom in 40k. Love burns. It gets turned inside out, set on fire, raped, shot with bolters, and beaten with a crowbar.
