Ok, so I thought I'd start a thread about Jazz. The mystery of Jazz, nay, the DANGER of Jazz...
So let's get together and post our favourite jazz tracks/artists (assuming you have one, of course) - let's listen, comment and hopefully increase our understanding of this most enigmatic of musical styles. I look forward to being introduced to some new stuff!
Skweee-bop!
I'll get the ball rolling with some Charles Mingus....
Dave Mustaine once made the mistake of describing his music as a jazz-metal hybrid. He was just kidding at the time, but people have not let him live it down. I'm one of those people.

@Youngblood - Ouch! Have you got anything to tranfer from vinyl to digital? - just so you don't have to play the records. I love 'Blue Rondo A La Turk' by Dave Brubeck - it's like 'proto-prog'!
No transfers. I only listen to Jazz on vinyl (with the exception of The Budos Band and some Miles Davis). There's something so pure and smooth about jazz vinyl.
I just wanna shout "Thomaaaaas" whenever i hear it. (that was a Tom and Jerry reference by the way).
My favourite Jazz tune is this:
Such a smooth song. Wes Montgomery was a beast on the octave solo too. I still cant play a lot of it :(
And another favourite is 'Full House'
What a great thread

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

This is a thread of pure win. To bad I can't enjoy a cigar inside!

I'm just worried about your old vinyl being damaged by repeated playing, that's all mate. I'm sure you know what your doing though!
Yeah, this thread is sophisticated like having french cigarette-smoke blown in your face by a beautiful-but-mysterious woman. Let's keep it up!
Now we're going to travel to the outer reaches with Mr. Ornette Coleman:
I dont think id be happy if some random woman blew smoke in my face. Even if she was pretty!
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Ah, no worries. If they become unlistenable, or if the listening experience deteriorates significantly, I'll a) buy a new vinyl or b) give in a get the cd/mp3.
@Youngblood - You COULD just buy the CD, and only get the Vinyl out for a 'special occasion'. I know people who do this. Depends if you have it on 'heavy rotation'. 'The Best of Scott Walker and The Walker Brothers' is an example of something I have on 'Heavy Rotation' - if I had it on Vinyl the disc would last about a fortnight!

Wow, Ive never really listened to Jazz, but there are alot of good tunes on here. How about some suggestions of material to check out for a Jazz noob? Besides whats already on here. Is there a "listen to THIS if you want to listen to jazz" out there?
I agree with youngblood tho, vinyl is just the gak to listen to music on. Most of the classic rock I listen to is on vinyl

A good place to start with Jazz is 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis - it's pretty much universally acknowledged as on of the Greatest Jazz records of all time. Any Miles Davis is good - I particularly enjoy:
Kind Of Blue
Birth Of The Cool
Sorceror
In a Silent Way
All four are vastly different, but equally creative and brilliant for different reasons.
I would say the best thing to do would be to just enter a few names in Youtube and see what takes your fancy!
Here's a few to get you started:
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Dizzy Gillespie
Charlie Parker - Yes, I'm into Be-bop!
Dave Brubeck
Gene Krupa
John Mcloughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra- sort of Jazz/prog fusion
Soft Machine - see above!
Charles Mingus
Thelonius Monk
Duke Ellington

My favorite jazz albums in no particular order:
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Mulatu Astatke - Ethiopiques Volume 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale, 1969-1974
The Dave Brubek Quartet - Time Out
Automatically Appended Next Post: Bitches Brew is another amazing Miles Davis album. It's definitely more progressive though.

Now that Albatross mention Mahavishnu Orchestra we need some fusion going.
I love playing this song.
Amazing solo.

Ha ha, I love it. I can play most of the song. The solo is impossible in places. I used to shred but i've had arthritis since i was 15 so not too much of that now!
