This is the same tourney that SirIsaacNewton went to. It was a 4 round tourney with no soft scores and 600 bucks for first place. Big doings in ATL.

I brought my current tourney list, a fairly fierce SM variant I like to call the Pain Train.

Librarian w/Null Zone, Might of the Ancients
Master of the Forge w/2 Servitors
5 Tac Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
5 Tac Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
5 Tac Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
Ironclad w/launchers, 2 HK's, melta gun and heavy flamer
8 man Assault Squad in Rhino w/extra armor, dozer blade, sarge has pfist

Round 1:

Modified KP (troops worth 1, HQ's worth 3, others 2, dedicated transports 1)
Primary: Win by 7 or more KP
Secondary: Have more troops in 12" of center
Tertiary: Kill HQ's

Enemy:

Big Bugs
Hive Tyrant w/wings, devourers
Hive Tyrant w/2 guard, scything talons
Elitefex w/scything talons, barbed strangler
Elitefex w/scything talons, barbed strangler
6 Warriors (12" charge, extra attacks)
20 w/out number gaunts
20 w/out number gaunts
10 scything talon scuttling stealers
Boss Fex (All the nonsense you'd expect, t7, 2+ save, 5 wounds, etc.)
Boss Fex
Sniper Fex

This isn't quite as easy of a matchup as it usually is, owing to the fact that he has less devourers, more fighting, but it still shouldn't be that bad. I might be in trouble just because of how hard it is to claim KP, but I doubt he can effectively claim my KP's in return.

Game:

I set up on my line and get to shooting. I alpha strike with the HK's taking down the flying tyrant (only 3+ save armor...tsk tsk tsk) and one of the elite fexes. As he gets closer I close ranks and prepare for a showdown, firing the lascannons all the while.

The round before impact I disembark my assault marines and move + run them into a line in front of my dreads, and give em a volley from the meltaguns. His initial assault is thus wasted on my marines, who are obltierated, giving me one more round of shooting before I charge in.

I'm cleaning up, with most of his fexes dead, but then his last super fex goes on a rampage, felling 3 dreads before it gets killed. Ultimately this means that the only way I can get the primary is to kill his last 2 fexes on the bottom of 6, one which has 2 wounds left needs to get taken out by the 2 razorbacks that are left, while the other that has 3 wounds left needs to get taken out by 2 units of tac marines with the master of the forge in tow.

That's just what happens, a very fortuitous comeback round gets me the win.

A big part of his problem was that he despaired in the face of a difficult matchup. He left his genestealers and gaunts behind because they couldn't hurt dreads, while a better solution would have been to use them to tie up dreads and let him pick his battles. He didn't have the fexes with 2+'s cover the fexes with 3's, which would have protected him from most of his missile issues. Basically, he didn't look for the right solutions, he just saw a bunch of walkers and gave up. That's no way to play.

Round 2:

There were a lot of massacres in round 1, so I've got a decent shot at getting an easy match.

Deployment: Triangles
Primary: 1 objective, but controlling/contesting is additive. IE (2 controllers need 2 contesters to beat)
Secondary: Have more scoring units on enemy's side
Tertiary: Have more nonscoring units on enemy's side

Enemy:

Space Wolves!

Rune Priest w/jaws
Rune Priest w/living lightning
4 x units of Grey Slayers with the right stuff, led by Wolf Guard 2 are in rhinos, 2 in LRR's
2 x Lone Wolves w/stormshield, 2 wolvse. One has chainfist, one has thunder hammer
2 x 5 Long Fangs, one has 5 lascannons, one has 5 missile launchers

He goes first and shoots at me, focusing on razorback. He misses a round of fire with the lascannons because of a mission specific rule (basically pre-game lash for both sides). Missile launchers don't get much done, he moves towards objective.

I move towards objective, alpha striking his lascannon team down to a 2 man group.

He shoots again, destroys a razorback.

I close again, 3 closest smoking.

He charges in his lone wolves, shakes both targe IC's.

I countercharge with my IC's trying not to finish things this round. It works out because he is using his wolves to try and live, not try and die.

He shoots at nonengaged dreads. Then his lone wolves die.

I push into his side. His infantry squads end up fighting dreads, and basically the game is just a scrum that spills over into his side as it winds down.

I end up with primary with him nowhere near by, secondary with one scoring unit in his zone, tertiary with like 4 in his zone.

He had some rotten luck with penning this game. He was penning more than he should, but each and every one was a shake or a stun. He claims that with another round he could have gotten primary and tertiary drawn, and it's actually pretty plausible. I think his main mistake was not blitzing me. If he sent those land raiders zipping towards me and smoking he could perhaps have held me up long enough to get on the objective, and at least contest primary.

Game #3:

Pitched Battle
Primary: Vp's must have > 500 margin
Secondary: take terrain features
Tertiary: Table Quarters ( I think)

Opponent:

6 Vendettas with squads + Straken + 2 suicide melta squads. Ruh Roh!

Ordinarily I'd have no chance vs. such a list...but this mission has auto-night fight on turn one, 2+ it keeps going on 2, and 4+ on 3.

Not much to tell about this game. I hide in the dark and use my searchlight dreads to mug the vendettas one at a time for the first 3 rounds, then smoke on the 4th. Straken tries to make a game of it by a late game charge vs. the dread line, but after he takes one out 2 team up on him and bad luck sees the medic drop. The game ends no 6 with the IG having gotten roughly 1.5 actual shooting phases, plenty of dreads to go around.

The librarian actually broke on the last round to a demo charge, I'm only up by 515 for Primary, but that's just enough. Go team lucky! I was also fortunate that the melta guys fell on 4, just after I'd turned the smoke on.

Always nice to mug a list you couldn't ordinarily take. This actually puts me in the top slot going into the last round.

Last game: Drawfest with a twist, you place the objectives in the opponent's quarter.

Primary: Take both.
Secondary: Take the one you place.
Tertiary: Take the one he placed.

My foe is trailer park IG.

4 Chimeras with melta vets, one Chimera with command squad melta guys, one devil dog, one vendetta, two medusas, One russ plasma special w/pask, 2 hydras.

I have a mistaken idea of how good a chance I have vs. these guys, as I'd just mugged an IG army via night fight, and actually done the same in a different mission vs. this precise list the day before. Consequently I'm somewhat hopeful.

He seizes the initiative, this hope is dashed.

Essentially this game was 90% his shooting phases. I'm serious, I'd move for like 5 minutes, shoot for a minute and give him the turn. Then he'd shoot for 35 minutes. He just blew me away. I moved towards his objective and mine, got shot off them. He had some fortunate rolling, but nothing exceptionally unreasonable.

Ultimately my MVP was a stone church. I drove a rhino inside, prayed for a wreck, got it, then stood on it. On the wreck I was out of sight from the door (above it) and the windows (below them), and I was able to preserve the ruins of some squads.

I ran out my last living man who was unbroken and contested the objective in my territory on the bottom of 6. Ironically his seizing was the only thing that let me get any points from this miserable game. My only KP achieved this game was Sly Marbo, who demo charged a dread to death. I got tie on primary/secondary with one guy left alive. Feeble.

Ultimately with 3 massacres and one minor loss I was third in the tourney. Second was trailer park IG, (my last foe), First was Player A (my eternal foe...with his twin lash. A-gain. He's played nothing else successfully since 5th edition came out.)

Good tourney had by all. Giga bytes is definitely upping their game. They've got some good local players, and their meta is growing steadily fiercer.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Great report! Sounds like the competition is pretty fierce in the GA. Out of curiosity have you played against SirIsaacNewton with this list? I would expect you to just rock his world, but am hoping that maybe it wouldn't be so one sided.

i was hoping to play you, but when i lost my first round to my roommate because I'm an idiot and misread the mission i realized that i didn't deserve to even face the pain train :( I fed him all my elites and HQs as fodder with the hopes of keeping all of my troops to bum rush the middle objective (i was playing Air Force Dark Eldar with 11 Raiders and 3 Ravagers) and in this particular mission all KPs were not created equal, i blaim the 10 hrs of gaming the day before along with the 1.5 hr drive that morning (and my scrubbiness)

I did well on the day, i brought it back to 7th, which considering that i only got 2 measely points in the first round, i feel was pretty good.

We shall meet on the 40k battlefield again one day sir! i swear to this!

I love your list, i had toyed with a similiar list before building my biker list, good to see that it can overwhelm people just as i suspected!

That tournament was a lot of fun, i was glad some fierceness was there, i had 2 great days of gaming!

I was the TO for this.

Glad you guys had fun. Tried to come up with unusual scenarios to keep everyone from playing the standard "this game will be annihilation with Spearhead deployment" you see at RTTs lately. Having multiple objectives and from 3-8 battle point modifiers each scenario meant players really had to pay attention or they would find themselves giving up a ton of points and not mean to.

With the exception of the top player and the poor guy with Tau who ended up with a zero for the day, just about everyone won at least one game in a big way and lost one big. From 4th place on down the scores were really tight.

@Somnicide: I haven't. It seems like walkers + null zone would be decisive, but I haven't actually tried the game.

@blood angel: To say the least.

@wiley: Eheh, gotta love the ole "Nice, I totally cleaned up the mission...better read the mission objectives to confirm my...OMG!" I once missed the phrase "non-vehicle" in a table quarters mission of some sort, lost the primary because of it. DE would probably be able to handle the Pain Train without much trouble, sit back and shoot dark lances. I'd need an amazing hunter killer +twin linked lascannon volley on top 1 to have a shot.

@BGN: It was a great tournament man. I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Only suggestion I've got is that the rules should penalize Player A...specifically. Like "Tertiary: Punch him in the gut, whoever does so hardest gets the points".

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I'm sure this won't make me popular, and I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but I think it needs to be said:

First was Player A (my eternal foe...with his twin lash. A-gain. He's played nothing else successfully since 5th edition came out.)

Considering the list you played in this tourney, I don't think you have a lot of room bashing his. Even if it's all he ever plays... Your list for this tourney was about as big a cheese-feast as is possible for SM.

Now, I don't have a problem with it, personally. I don't have a problem with ANY codex legal list. But there's a saying about people in glass houses.

Looking at your army at the time, I remember thinking that I wouldn't mind playing against it, it'd be interesting, and I liked my chances.

Didn't realize at the time there was a Libby in it. That complicates things.

The most likely result (I think): I kill off the Libby (and whoever's hiding him), kill maybe 1 Dread and a damage result on a couple more, lose a couple DP's, and at the end of the game I'm in a giant cluster-f*** with a bunch of walkers I can't hurt very easily, that can't hurt me very easily, while the Tac squads zip around getting objectives, but none of my guys can leave the Kairos bubble without getting murdered.

I could be totally wrong, but that's my guess. Since I'd have to use my initial shooting to concentrate on getting rid of the NZ, I probably wouldn't have much time to do stuff to Dreads before they get into CC.

Also, to MagickalMemories: I don't think he was criticizing Player A for only playing Lash, I think he was dissing Player A for only being successful with Lash (among the armies he's played). That way he can avoid saying anything that might be construed as praise for winning.

@BGN: Jesse's kind of tournament!

@wiley: Word.

@Magik: Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't being clear. I'm all for cheesy lists. To my mind, bring the 'ardest you can make to a tourney. I was mocking Player A for not having a new list in a long while.

@SirIsaac: I still like my chances, too bad we are unlikely to get a chance to play for a while. Maybe we can do it over the holidays as part of the adepticon practice bit. I'm most enthusiastic about my odds in an objective game, less so in KP.

I don't know how much my Dark Eldar would like to fight this list. At first glance my thought was, kill the razorbacks and the game is mine, then I saw the 12 hunter killer missiles and I peed alittle.

I would feel confident in your ability to destory 1/2 to 2/3rds of my raiders in the first two rounds and if it was a killpoint mission I would probably be boned and if it was a objective mission I would be hard pressed to move your ironclads with most my DL gone.
If the worst happened I would try and kill the few troops and force a draw of stretch for a minor win.
