This is a question that has been bothering me for some time, and it is this: Would it be possible to play 40k over the Internet in a similar way to playing chess by post? Obviously the game is a lot more complicated than chess so would be difficult to set up and play. But if a suitable system was worked out and a usable dice rolling widget created so as to prevent dice cheats then would it be possible to create a forum on Dakka for this purpose?

I was thinking the game would be played like this:
Rules would have to be created, and army lists posted and checked beforehand.
- Both players would set up their armies on seperate tables, using pieces of paper or counters of some kind to represent enemy models.
- Each player would send plan views/photographs of their army set up to the other player via the post attachment feature.
- Movement would be worked out in angles, and the moving unit and its movement angle and distance would be posted. (movement would be measured from the squad leader)
- Shooting is measured by both participants from the firing unit, with a margin of error of about 2 Inches and the results posted here with appropriate saves made by the opposing player.
- Charges are measured (again by both players to prevent cheating) Then made and the results calculated using an appropriate dice rolling mini program installed in the options bar.
-The next player has a go and repeat all steps until finishing the game.

Unfortunately, having just tried that program it seems extremely complicated, I expect I would get used to it eventually but no-one seems to be on, which is where my idea has the advantage, anyone with an army, a table and some dice can play with anyone on Dakka. I did like the dice rolling feature however. Thanks anyway.

Vassal is amazing. Maybe you didnt connect to the servers, because there are always people on. Youre not going to get anything better than that, especially after people saw what happened with Vassal and GW.

Ah ok, maybe i'll try again, is there any sort of tutorial anywhere that teaches you how to set things up and play?

Hey PM me as well, last I heard vassal was shut down due to GW being GW. Now Im curious

It sounds like it could work. There is a online play system for MTG so why not for table top gaming as well?
