OK so I had a look at the Army Painter Youtube video on quickshade and it looks like a good way of getting rank and file minis ready for the tabletop as opposed to spending half one's life painting the damn things by hand. I wonder if anyone here has any practical experience, positive or otherwise, of using quickshade. Also some before and after pics would be pretty good so I can get a handle of how neat / messy the whole dipping process is.
Thanks,

Ok, I have used it before. It is very thick stuff and if not done just right it leaves dark streaks along the model. I ofund the whole process very very messy. Unless you have a large area that you don't mind getting dirty by shaking off the excess quickshade then don't use it. The videos do not tell you that you need a matte coat because quickshade dries extemely glossy.
You will be better served spending your money on a few pots of Devlin Mud Wash.

Mmmm, that's what was most apparent from the video was the chap whirling the mini around, clamped in a pair of mole-grips. I don't have an issue with the space / mess side of things (I have a whole garage to myself if I need) but having to spend hours centrifuging each mini to get rid of excess seems a high price to pay especially if, as you mention, the finish can be compromised anyway. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just to make it clear, I already make extensive use of the new GW washes (they really have revolutionised my painting style but that's neither here nor there). I guess what I am looking for is the same holy grail as everyone else - good finish but with quick speed. Maybe I just need to learn to speed paint?

My experience is different. I use a brush to paint the varnish on, which allows a lot of control as to how much gets put on each model. If there's too much in a crevasse, just stick a strip torn from a napkin into the area, and it'll absorb the extra. The results are great, however, you absolutely will need matte varnish later...the models do end up very shiny!

I tried the system to make Deathwing Termies. While their spray was the right color, it was very, very thick even when sprayed in small doses. I even tried the drill method of shaking off the quick shade and all it did was dried the model with streaks.
Expensive, and has a high learning curve.

I've used quickshade with the original label (It's repackaged, marked up Minwax Polyshades). I used it on necrons and was pretty happy with the results. If you're dipping, after about 10 minutes, when it first starts drying, you might want to wet a brush with some turpenoid or similar, and wiping down the spots where it's pooled. If you're painting it on with a brush you can probably skip this step.

The stuff works ok as is. Like pipboy said it is very think. I would actually have to use my air compressor to blow the stuff off areas that it would clump in. What I discovered from a guy at the shop I play at is to cut it with about 25/75 paint thinner to quik shade. It thins it out nicely. I still use delvan mud as means to hide mistakes andsuch but the dip works great to highlite other areas. If you go to there web page they have several tutorials on using washes prior to the dip.

For almost every miniature I have painted in the past two years, I have given a coat of ArmyPainter Strong tone. Sometimes I use it as pure time-saver, but more often as an overall shading that binds the colours together - in other words, to complete the miniature. At first I dipped the minis straight into can and shook the bejesus out of them, but it didn't take long until I realised it was not the optimal way to do it. Nowadays, I apply the dip with brush (about half inch wide). Brush-dipping allows better control, doesn't waste any dip and most importantly, does not require any special arrangements apart from a can of turpentine to clean the brush afterwards. In general, I find brush-dipping equally fast than can-dipping, but it takes less effort and generates better results.
And yes, always give them a coat a matt varnish before posting pictures of dipped miniatures. It's the glossy, poorly dipped miniatures that give the dipping its bad reputation.
Some pictures of my dipped miniatures:
Tomb Things
Nurgle Raemons
IG Ratlings
Dryads, Ogryns, Cursed company
Space Hulk Genestealers
Ammo Runtz
Empire Captain
I can give more dipping advice later, but I'm in a hurry now.

Sorry to semi-necro this, but my Daemons + Quickshade arrived today. Thankfully I already had my Furies ready to go for when the QS arrived so I jumped right into it. They are drying now and in hindsight I should have worn gloves (or checked to see if I had any turpentine, haha) but that's a minor detail
So far I'm extremely happy with the results, and it's not even done drying yet. The downside is there's a bit of pooling (stupid wings) but that's easily remedied by some strategically placed paper towel. Once they dry and I paint the bases I'll post them up. I'll be documenting my entire Khorne army and painting the entire thing with QS, so hopefully it will prove to be useful to some
