The Chaos Space Marine army I want to look at across the table is:
All painted the same regardless of unit choices (so Plague Marines should still look like Word Bearers).
All painted the same except for the cult marines (Plague Marines painted like Death Guard but the rest as Word Bearers).
Every unit is from a different warband all brought together under a powerful leader.
Something else entirely (please leave a comment)

Hopping on the pain wagon

Hey all, even though I am in the midst of painting up a lot of daemons my mind is wandering to my next project. I have decided it will, without a doubt, be Chaos Space Marines. I am in the conceptualizing phase of design (which is probably one of my favorites) and have decided to go with Word Bearers (with all the daemons I already have and that will be painted, it just makes sense).

Okay, that being said, another concept I am considering is a multi-warband approach as is covered in the current CSM codex. I know a lot of people don't like the codex or the ideas, but I want this thread to stay away from that knee jerk reaction.

I was thinking it might be interesting to paint each squad up in different warband colors. They will all be based the same which will hopefully pull some coherency into the list.

Which gets me to the point of this discussion. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts on it? If you were playing against it a tourney would you feel like my army wasn't truly painted and themed?

What about all word bearers but then have the cult marines painted like they "should" be rather than as word bearers?

Anyway, thanks.

However you want to paint them, ie other. Want to paint them the same, go for it. Want them different, go for it.

Yeah, the reason I posted it was the reaction I got locally from the people I play with when I asked it. I was curious if that was the overall feel or just in my local area. I tried hard with my poll options not to skew it one way or the other.

I think a fully painted army looks great whatever, but even if the units are painted entirely differently to each other then you should use a unifying theme throughout, like Shoulder pads all painted the same colours for example. As an example heres a Corn Beserker I painted for a friend a while ago, now, his other units are painted completely differently, but there is a strong theme of red and darkened gold throughout his army.

So this is what I did with my Black Legion when I painted them up. Every model is predominantly done in the black legion colors of black, silver, and gold. However for cult specific troops I added those colors into their patterns, so nurgle has a lot of green on them, berserkers have some reds, but their is still the base colors on every model.

I agree with that plan. Once I get my Noise Marines I plan to make them Word Bearers like my other models, but do the shoulder boards pink. It makes the army as a whole look more coherent.

I like the warband option, makes troop choices easy to distinguish on the battlefield, and makes painting soooo much less boring (trust me, doing black legion gets very dull after a while). Mixing up the paint jobs you can keep your focus without going crazy.

Ive got members of each cult (no painted slaanesh yet tho), black legion as my regulars + havocs, and Alpha legion as my sneaky chosen + Special weapon (meltas)squads. Im adding a homemade warband of recently corrupted iron hands as vanilla troops (poss mark of nurgle) soon.

I dont worry too much about tying a theme across the army, but I do make sure all their bases are done in the same style.

Hmmm... some interesting ideas here. I am looking at doing something like this for my WBs

and I will be sure to use the appropriate sigil for the marked ones - maybe I will wash the background parchment with appropriate colors...

Very basic painting, as I am a very inexperienced painter, but I have a couple of troops from my Chaos Space Marine Squad, my Terminator Lord with paired Lightning Claws, and the Vindicator I got two days ago.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My plan is to put runes on the tank similar to those on the Lords loincloth thing (there must be a name for it, but I don't know it), and around the ankles of the Chaos Space Marines. (Not sure why the pictures are called what they are, I think my sister has been messing with the camera).

Daemon Princes and the summoned Greater Daemon are your best bet for getting the best daemonic choices into your army. I would also strongly recommend a squad of possessed Chaos Space Marines. I am a purist when it comes to Chaos so personally I wouldn't field any cult Marines. Obliterators however are another great choice and they could tie in with the theme of your army if painted correctly.
