If, as I would like, I manage to get a cat in the near future (need to figure out a solution to living in a non-ground floor flat, but never mind), what do you think I should call it?
My first thought is that my surname is Goodwin, and I lived in and speak Japanese, so I could call it Goodwin in Japanese, which is Yoshikatsu, and is a fairly common (though, I think, old-fashioned) given name in Japan. It is good because it shortens to Yoshi and has "Kat" in it.
Someone in a another thread here has a cat called Ninja, which I think is an awesome name for a cat, especially if it is black.
An ironic name, like Fido or Ratty would make me laugh.
If I had a pair of cats, I could call them something like Stop It and Tidy Up. I tried to call my childhood best friend's cats this when we were young, but his Mum got annoyed and called them Peaches and Cream. Rubbish.

"Dog" is a lovely name for a cat. I find the best pet names are the names of other types of animal (my cat was named "Monkey", a friend's dog was named "Cod", etc).

Some friends of mine had their cat die on them a few months back, and they were pestered into getting a new one by their bairns. Mum was keen to reuse the same named bowl, collars etc etc and suggested that they named this new cat after something all the family loved.
A fine idea but this has resulted in said new moggie being called "Tescos".

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

My kitty is named Seamus. My wife's a huge Harry Potter fan, so all of our animals have names from that series. That would wonderfully if you happen to be a Harry Potter fan. If not, consider a name from a series or book that you enjoy.

I think pet names should always end in a y. Like my old dog was Scruffy. After he passed away I adopted a 6 year old american eskimo named Ariel, but I call her Ellie. I only use Ariel when I'm scolding her, like "Oh Ariel, I can't believe you crapped in your pen again! I was only gone for 10 minutes!"
I dunno about cat names though, since I'd never have a cat but if I did I would probably do something similar. Or why not just call it "kitty"?

My cat is called Ska, his brothers were named Rocky and Jazz
For non-groundfloor cat-keeping, you can keep him/her inside and have a litter-box. This will cause your cat to stay a bit smaller and eat less though (saves on catfood?). In my previous appartment I lived half a floor above ground, had a stepped plank propped against the balcony and a big cardboard tube with step-cuts so he could get outside through the bathroom window and the plank (To catch lots of mice and boss around the other, smaller cats of the neighbourhood). Downside is that we had a few cat-fights inside when a neighbour cat sneaked in.
Ska is currently staying at my Parent's house, and will probably stay there. we always had cats and they have a big backyard and I'm currently bunking at friends in the East for time being (job transfer delayed )
The last cat my parents had was named Flip (anglization=Phil) and he was huge (though, not fat), so I often called him Philip the Great (ancient Makedonian king). Died of a brain tumor (he actually went bezerk because of that the day he died... didn't even need the shot)
Yoshikatsu is a pretty cool cat-name. I'd go for that

My friend's cat is named Meat Gin and Tonic. Her two favorite things.
My last cat was Dr. Cornelius Booblesworth III esquire, the Earl of Sandwich. I had him for three years in college, his name grew in length throughout that time. Most of my pets have evolving names.
Other suggestions:
Ronin

Call the cat " " (don't give it a name). it's not like it'll come when you call it, anyway.
Besides. How fun would THAT be,
"Hey. This is my cat."
"What's it's name?"
"Oh. I call it ."
"What?"
"What what?"
"What do you call the cat?"
"I told you. He's ."
"Yes."
"Yes what?"
"You never told me it's name."
"Bull. I told you twice. It's ."
(ad infinitum)

My wife made an unfortunate agreement with me. If she got another cat without my approval (I'm allergic to a HUGE degree, and animals annoy me), I got to name it. She got 3 vetoes.
Well, she adopted the cat.
After she vetoed 3 names that were created for the sole purpose of killing off the veto power, I promptly named the cat Skidmark.
1) The cat was a rescue from a local Vet. Someone brought her to them after hitting her with their car. She still had black marks on her head & paw from screeching across the road.
2) She's white with brown streaks. LOL
3) The day she p!sses me off enough, that's all that'll be left of her across the floor after I punt her.
