A few quick tips on terrain building, and a couple of bits of advice based on me getting it wrong:
Simple hills and buildings, just use your model's box cut to size, then cover in gypsum bandages. You can get these in most craft shops, just cut into strips to form your hill, wet them and lay them over the box. They dry out to look vaguely like concrete, and can be painted.
Ground: believe me, having built a 6' x 3' recreation of a D-Day beachhead using polyfilla, once dry it's awfully heavy. Either make sure your table (and floor) can take the weight, or find a lighter way to do things. Your wife or landlord will be happier too.
Enjoy: don't pay any attention to anoraks who have time to make and fit scale boltheads, you'll go crazy. It's 40k, where things get bodged, so if you want a Basilisk on soul eater legs I ain't gonna complain.
R & R (rest & recuperation): assuming you're old enough to legally drink, don't play with scalpels nor modelling knives when you've had a few. And put sharp things down before you eat. I still have PTSD from a close encounter with a scalpel, a overly hot pizza, and a half bottle of scotch.
