Is anyone else having problems with google? I think it has been infected with a virus or just is utterly rubbish right now because it:

a) will not go to gmail
b) when you try to click on a search result it goes to a different website.

Seems fine to me. Sometimes the result links get hijacked, if you get redirected obviously don't click on any links on that site and run a virus scan in case they were competent in what they were trying to do. Gmail works just fine for me as well.

There's your problem right there. Run a full scan; sounds like adware to me..

Yep, found a virus. Thought it was one of those somewhere along the way, turns out that was causing random webpages to open up at random times too. Hopefully AVG got rid of it, I had to pack up for the 6 hour drive before I finished the complete scan.

Luckily it wasn't a "OH my god!!! My computer is dividing by zero!!!" virus, more of a "Stop opening up that random firefox window, it slows down the internet" virus.

In what way may I ask, I currently use AVG but am always on the look out for something better as I already have four working on my PC that look after all quarters so-to-speak (and no it doesn't greatly affect performancec of the PC)

My Mcafee has packed in for some reason and I'm getting that fixed tonight hopefully if i get time, and my other two haven't given me any alerts recently despite updates, so I'm questioning their ability for virus protect.

For the OP, my guess would be a virus on your own system, had it myself a while ago with a few websites and a few scans managed to clear it easily.

Alfred McMango wrote:buy a new computer -.- if you gots money you can get a good one if not than scan fully properly without interrupting the scan

Just .. .. BUY .. .. a new computer? Most people don't have £300 to £500 to throw on a new computer just like that, just because of a simple Virus, Virus scanning is a far cheaper and better method regardless of your finances. Unless a PC is beyond repair then just buying a new one isn't the way forward and it would be cheaper to get it sent to a repair shop in either case. Granted ICT is my profession, but I've cleared PC's of over to 2500 virus's Torjan's before, and you seriously wonder how one person can aquire so many

Thats the only times I'd recommend a new PC, when the cost of repair is too much or the PC in question is so old that it makes sense to upgrade.

Sounds like malware. We had the same problem at work the other month on one computer which would tell us the webpage we were searching for wasn't safe and we should sign up for some rubbish anti-wirus package to be sure we havent contracted a virus. The results page was convieniently dressed up to look like google's aswell.

Avast is really good, it gets updated frequently on its own, is free (for the home use package), and makes cool noises when it find something bad, and it doesn't mess with your use of internet explorer like some of the others do

Yes I got this one too, after failing to follow my own advice. Normally if I'm ever prompted to update some software I go directly to the website and update from there unless the software itself has its own update function. Whilst trying to find music video's I got prompted to update to Flash 9, I umm''ed and arr'ed and decided that I did indeed need it as my version was 8. I foolishly clicked on their link rather than going to flash's website and hey presto. Got myself a lovely virus that took me a week to clear. Just saying as a warning to others of ONE way you can get these beggars

Yes, I know what caused it. My computer is not hooked up to the internet, so until it is, I will not know if the problem is fixed or not. Apparently some people do not read posts....

Firefox does a good job letting me know if my pr0n is not safe, like this:

Check your homepage settings. Fake Google sites can easily be made to spoof the popular search engine, and overwrite your homepage settings.

Now, if this still happens when you type www.google.com in the address bar of your browser (or click my hotlink), that is a bad sign. Try Spybot Search and Destroy. It will get rid of malware shenanigans, and let you know when registries are changed, allowing you to pick and choose what does and doesn't get changed in your registries. kinda annoying, but not asa bad as Vista UAC.

um.... I first posted this when my computer WAS connected to the internet. I have since disconnected it so it won't get anymore viruses or send out any of my info until I have this dealt with.

I know. I did read your post... Let me just politely say that this is an odd attitude to have when you are asking for help...
I will check this out once I have my comp connected to the internet again.

Glad to hear that. I don't mean to be snarky, but you will NEVER fix it if you quarantine your machine like that, simply because you will never know if/when/how you fixed it.

Cheers, and good luck!
