Im glad to hear that, because honestly, I was a bit skeptic. Jude Law, personally, is one of those actors that I either love, or hate. And from the previews, I was thinking Im going to hate the man

It's perfect casting for him since he is not in the leading role. He is much better suited for these type roles. On another note the soundtrack does not release until January 12, that really sucks.

I do think the film will be a good film full of bravado and fun, but not faithful to the original text, Holmes and Watson were best portrayed by Jeramy Brett and Edward Hardwicke respectively. I'm still looking forward to seeing it

At least it did show Holmes more as found in the books, an anti-social prick not much unlike this modern version of him:

Damn straight.

Is there much actual sleuthing and deduction in the film then ? It does have a good cast but i had my doubts when I sawe the trailer and..well... the director didn't exactly inspire with confidence.

Oh, what's on/in the soundtrack too then ?

Oh, I know that that movie takes Doyle's books and throws them out the window. Van Helsing did the same thing, and it was still good fun to watch, as was League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I know beforehand that any literary background is going to be mangled if at all present and just watch it for the sake of entertainment.

Ask me this? Why would you want it exactly the same as the original. True, there are certain things we all want to stay the same, but adaption and change is why we go to see them on the big screen. To see exactly what's done differently this time. (That said, you name it exactly the same as a novel series and then completely remove the main villian and you lose my vote. *Bourne franchise, cough cough*)

Actually there is quite a bit of sleuthing in the movie and done nicely in a way to show Holmes' genius. In many ways this movie is true to the novels than any other.

No one has disagreed with you, I for one are looking forward to seeing it. i just think that Jeremy Brett encapsulated the character as completely and intuitively as possible.

It is no more unfaithful than any other adaptation, it just focus's on one aspect of his personality that others de-emphasized while playing up another. Instead of a cold logical automaton his brilliance makes him self destructive when not engaged, like, oh, having a cocaine addiction.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I was more meaning that the promo and trailers I've seen seem to imply events like explosions for no apparent reason and other traits more typically associated with hollywood action movies. Again, same promos make the main character seem slightly off, but that point I can't comment on before I've seen it.

It’s a Guy Ritchie film- therefore it features lots of quick cuts, lots of action, slow-mo fighting, and bareknuckle boxing badassery.

It also has Robert Downey Jr. playing a pretty disheveled and obsessive Holmes, as opposed to the traditional elegant one, but I don’t think the characterization is a terrible sin against Doyle. He’s still portrayed as the deductive genius. That quote from The Red Headed League is a classic, and I think this film very much reflects it.

They’ve definitely upped the ante on the action and adventure content to make appeal to a wider audience, but it’s still a good movie, and (IMO) even a good Sherlock movie.

I just saw it earlier today, and I thought it was very well-done. I, too was skeptic at first - as others have said, the trailers really make it look to be a very action-oriented film - but it had a fair amount of sleuthing and deductive reasoning in the midst of all the action. Heck, I was slightly worried the whole time that the story would just give out no more explanation for some of the effects than "It's magic", but the scene at the end with Holmes and Blackwood on the bridge was extremely cool. And the slow-mo fight scenes were brilliant, though I wish there would have been more than just the two.

Robert Downey, Jr. was actually fantastic as Holmes. I like to think of this rendition as a showing of the man behind the man - rather than show off him being cool, calm and composed while easily solving a case, the movie portrays him as being disheveled and a bit absent-minded at times. You can't expect a world-famous detective to be completely prepared and proper ALL the time, right?
