I finally bought an issue of White Dwarf to see what was in there for Tyranids. As I paged to the article showing a Tyranid force in the army workshop article, I thought at first glance the painter had just dashed some color on grey plastic. A couple seconds later I realized that the man had painted his army to look that way.
Is it just me or is that paint scheme fairly craptacular? Is the guy having a poke at people that don't paint their armies or what?

No, it was just a very subtle paintscheme with very subtle shading. I think it was more of a quick scheme than anything, so that he could knock out more minis in a shorter amount of time.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It was subtle to the point of non existence.

It was indeed a rather weak paint scheme. Why they chose to dedicate several pages to it I have no idea.

Apart from the fact it was the same colour as the basic plastic, a rather unfortunate choice of colour. A shame if he did do a full undercoat with shading and highlighting because the end result betrays the effort put in.

Obviously they have pages to fill.

Yeah, it was pretty disappointing. I wonder if it looks better in real life? It was far too monochromatic in the photos.

I, for one, happened to like the effect of the black and gray paint job on those models, especially in contrast to the bases.

Not every Tyranid paint scheme has to look like something which would make a tropical bird look boring.

I think what he did Basing wise was rather goodbut the Paint Scheme wasn't too magical...

Anyone have a picture? Is it the yellow and gray scheme? I rather like it, if thats what it was, but it certainly doesn't show well on small pictures in print.

this is exactly how I felt. first issue I had bought in 4 months and the painting was awful. Subtle is one thing but so subtle you can't tell it was painted at all? No thanks. Could have been grey without being the exact same colour as the plastic comes in.

Apparently the guy likes the color scheme and GW thought it was neat.

I for one am getting tired of "rainbow" tyranids. Most Tyranid armies look like someone dumped some Lucky Charms into the spawning vat.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

I agree, Just because the colour scheme is not so bright that it burns your eyes does not mean that it has been lazily done.

If you look at the pictures properly, you can see that it's quite obvious that the grey has been painted on.

Anyway, the main point of the article was to illustrate how you can make a tyranid army, which still has models with a sense of individualism.

Ive been thinking the same thing. As someone mentioned, the problem isnt that it's subtle or a fast job - the problem is after all the effort it looks a heck of a lot like unpainted grey plastic.

Apart from the large sections of black and yellow armour, and the completely painted bases, which means that, in essemce, you lot are complaining about his colour scheme.

obviously it took time to paint the army up and that can be respected, but i too think that the color scheme it self just sucks...
its very bland and theres not much about the models that really excite me...
if had used the same techniques and stylizing but with different colors instead of grey and black (and the bits of yellow) it would be a great looking army...
the colors just kill all the effort put into it for me...

The article is more about army painting in general than a showing off an outstanding army. It just so happened that Chad's style
of painting/building an army highlights these techniques rather well.
There are some ok tips: colour selection - giving models within units some height - pre mixing your paints etc.
Not a bad article and I look forward to more from this series.
The problem with posting pics is that the photos aren't very good in the first place, my reproduction is going to look even worse!
Not exactly what i would call a stunning army and the smaller bugs seem a little 'flat' but i'll wager that these models look far better in real life.

They were well painted but with an unfortunate choise of colours. Some folks like it some don't

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

They don't look unpainted to me? They look just fine. I think the yellow on black on the genestealer is what throws off the rest of the color scheme. The markings on the trygon and carnifex are over the model's head/back, where as since the stealer doesn't have those armor plates, its tougher to mark them in the same way.

Anyway, looks very pale grey/green.

I like it, actually. I'll admit that the choice of the specific gray was a little unfortunate, but it looks like something that actually might be able to sneak up on somebody like, say, a genestealer is supposed to be able to do. (Sorry, guys, but skittlenids don't really have camo in any environment outside of a candy store.)

I believe that the lighting is bad for these pictures, but other than that they are well done.

I liked the yellow highlights, but the grey was a bit boring. I mean it looked like they had just chucked a whole pot of grey over the army. I guess it was supposed to show you can produce a simple quick colour scheme if you don't want to take forever painting an army.

The only models I thought looked good with that paint scheme were the stealers. If they had changed the carapace color it would have been better, but overall, it's very dissapointing for a dedicated article.
