From my own corner, I know people that have at least a year's supply of food and whatnots put aside over a period of time that came in handy when thy lost jobs, or experienced other problems that hampered their ability to provide.
There are a lot of ways to build up resources without going all in at once and breaking the bank. Just buying a little extra in the way of canned food is a good start. The same applies to medicine and hygene supplies. The thing is to cycle the extra stuff so it doesn't end up old and nasty if you end up needing it.

There's a small island in the middle of the Thames. Plenty of boats around, and the rivers flowing too fast to have zombies get across. Just det the very small bridge, and its a safe haven. There's a high street up the road to forage for supplies just before I det the bridge at, and the island has a borehole and its own generator. The river takes away waste.

In other words, my emergency end of the world plan is ready.

Wow, I thought the fifties RED and STRANGER SCARE was over and done with. I'm guessing the safest place in the US right now is Frazz's lawn.

Honestly having experinced Huricane Katrina and it's aftermath first hand,I see nothing wrong with being prepared for the worst.
For weeks people had very little food and water,no protection and the "agencies" that are supposed to be there to help were no where to be found in many areas.
Hell,even the National Guard (once they did show up) seemed to be there more to protect property and "maintain order" than to help,although in fairness some of them were very cool,but that reflects the person,not the unit as a whole.
Basicly,anyone who was there can tell you that the system broke down totaly,and self relince (and people looking out for there own little groups) was all we had,hell we saw thousands of looters in the first few weeks but very few cops,and the ones we did see didn't seem to interested in protecting much of anything.
Images of the chaos that went on at the superdome only scratch the surface of what was going on,it was for all intents,much much worse.
I personaly have very little faith in government to protect/care for me or my family in a serious crisis situation (and yes they can happen),so preparing for the worst makes sense to me.

Sure its fun to make fun of people like that, specially the hippy, I mean survivalist in that video. But at the very least IF something were to happen, those people would be prepared for it. I mean statistically this life of easy things isnt going to last forever right?

Wait around for "OFFICIAL" help you'll be dead first, regardless of the crisis. Most times you are better off trying to save your own ass yourself.

Another good example are the riots that went on in LA, when the people that didn't have guns could only stand and watch as their homes and businesses were looted and burned. The home and business owners that had guns were able to defend them and keep rioters away. This doesn't even go into the situation of people that didn't dare go out in the slim hope of finding food.
I think you're totally right, FITZZ, until somebody has been in a situation like you have, they can't fully comprehend it or appreciate how desperate it can be if you don't even have the basic neccesities.

I found the article very condescending. It's still very much a "look at the paranoid freaks!" mentality written by people who have no idea how their food actually gets to them.

It's not about hording as many guns as you can and praying for an apocalypse while living in the backwoods thinking the government is out to get you. It's about being ready for what happens when the power goes out and you can't go to the store to get things anymore.

I suppose it makes sense to prepare for the worst if you are somehow attached to the particular space you inhabit at any given moment.

My entire plan for the worst revolves around physical conditioning, and always having enough money for plane tickets to anywhere in the world.

It's an Australian thing. Kinda like a grizzly bear. But worse. They are similar to a large koala, crossed with a Tasmanian Devil. Their favourite method of attack is to wait for thier prey to pass underneath them, and then drop ontop of them, cuasing all sorts of damage. Hence the name.

Rangers often come across hikers who've been attacked. Ussualy if it's just the one (and they are predominantly solitary creatures) you should be alright. But in the Dry season they group together and get very aggresive. Most National Parks are off limits in those times.

Rangers have to deal with them non-stop, and there have been quite a few fatalities. They often joke that, if we were to catch them, the Drop Bears should be utilised in the armed forces.

I always imagined them as penguins with duck bills.

But then again, a Drop Bear isn't nearly half as dangerous as a bunyip...and don't get me started on yowies...

Of course the Drop Bears are repelled if you put lots of Vegemite onto your hat.

True, that works for most of them. But in the dry season you might want to go the extra step wax your body with the stuff. And don't forget the screwdriver!

Just make sure it's not iSnack 2.0, that stuff attracts the Bunyips.

What if the worst involves some unforseen economic disaster like what happened in Germany or the Great Depression? I have an aunt who had to be given up by her parents because they didn't have the means to feed her, and she tells me that hers was not an uncommon story. It doesn't even have to be widespread, the simple act of losing your job these days can spell hardship for a fair stretch of time.
