My friend and I went 50/50 for the Warhammer 40k, Assault on black reach starter box. He nabbed up all the Space Marines (He love them, and has read about every book about them). While I grabbed all the Ork boyz.

I've never painted a table top mini figures before, My cousin was really into fantasy and had a awesome ork army all painted and ready to go (He gave to me after he join the army, can show you some pics if you want.) so that is what kinda got me into wanting to play warhammer, and my best friend loved the space marines, so we went into warhammer 40k.

So after we bought the box set, we bought glue, starter painting set, some primer, some files and quickly put all our figures together. This was 3 months ago, and my poor ork boyz have been sitting in the closet, wanting some color added to them. Recently, my good friend got into warhammer 40k and he also bought that starter box set. We traded my space marines for his orks. (it all worked out)So I deiced to start to paint them. After looking up tips on the internet, I found this webpage, and one of the tips was to start a blog to encourage me to paint start to finish, so this is what I am going to do.

My friend and I are going to play a game in two weeks, and we each are going to have a army of 500 points, starting out small, but we are excited.

Here is what I have to paint.

20 x Ork boyz

5 x Nobz

3 x Deffcoptas

1 x Ork warboss

Name and theme of my ork band, "Uz be need'n da medicz" Red/white, with medic crosses as their logo's. I got this Idea from bloodbowl a while back.

A group of Orkz who always noticed after a battle, a group of space marines dressed in white, with small + on their armor would come out and deal with the dead and injured. They quickly came up with the idea to put the symbols on their armor because that is what their enemy's would be quickly seeing after fighting with them.

I have a cam, but I can't find a the cord, until then these pics are from my web cam :( I wish i could get better quality out of it. But this is just a basic pic of my guys all primer black.

Tonight I will get a much better quality Photo of my ork to be army!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Sadly I can't find my card to my real camera! So more web cam shots :(

When I first started, I want my guys to be white, but I quickly found out that did not work, you could still see black under the white, and i felt that white was not just cutting it. So I painted over the white with Red Gore and it turn out great! you could still see the white and black thought the red, and I loved that look! from then on, anything that was going to be red, i quickly brushed white over it to get the same effect on all my guys

I primer everything black, then used Chain mail on the shoota and choopa. Painted his skin Goblin Green. I then painted what I wanted to be red, white, then went over it again with red. I gave my guys boots, and fingerless gloves, with Snakebite leather. When added white medic signs on places I thought would look good. Added some white+a little bit of Snakebite to color the teeth (I did not want pearly whites on these guys!) and red in the eye sockets. Using Dwarf Bronze, I colored in the rings on the Nob's armor, and nose ring. To give his axe more gore, I diped my brush in Gore red, then brushed most of the paint out on a towel, and lightly brush the rest on the axe and gun. Then went back and touch up all my sloppy (And i mean sloppy!) paint job. I really need to get a finer brush!

Here is my first completed Nob!

The front view, I am going to get a cord for my cam and take new ones if you guys want. But maybe not, cuz you can see my really bad painting skills

The back view

The top view

I know they are crappy picures, but am I on the right track? this is my first attempt at paiting, and I am really enjoying it!

As a struggling painter I hear ya on the difficulties. You are on the right path I see you have gone to a bright color scheme. Have you any experiences with washes? For example on your really bright silver parts a wash of badab black does wonders.

As base coating for a color will help you alot for example here is how I paint my ork skin.

Prime Black or White bother work well. Remember its easier to darken then to lighten.

Foundation paint Orkhide Shade (if you dont have this its a 2:1 goblin green chaos black mix that should be pretty close. Your aiming for a dark green)

Dry Brush Goblin Green.

Highlight 2:1 Goblin Green - Polished bone (if no polished bone skull white but be careful white can destroy the green in a mix)

Thraka Green Wash...

As for guns I prime black.

Drill out the gun barrel.

TinBits coat the gun

Dry Brush Boltgun Metal

Wash Badab Black

Highlight Chainmail.

Drill out the gun barrel.

Since you are using AOBR orks here is a good idea to break the monotony by a simple cut here and there with a reposition.

Places to cut are the wrists / biceps. A clean cut and just reposition them like this. Btw not the best looking paint job but ignore that and focus on the new positions of the AOBR boyz.

Is the bright green not orkish enough?

Sadly, I don't know what washing and dry brushing is. I read about doing it, but no one ever said how to do it.

As car as cutting the models, what do you use? I got exacto knifes, but they don't cut that well.

Also, what do you use to drill out the slugga's?

You use modeling knives to cut. Your FLGS should have one for sale.

A wash is quite simple. It's a product from Games Workshop's Wash line of paints. Your FLGS will also have them. An example is Badab Black wash or Thrakka Green wash. They are thin and watery. You just put them over the area you want washed and the wash flows into the recesses and darkens them, adding some tone. It will darken the rest of the applied area too, but that effect looks rather nice and it darkens the recesses far more. The GW wash brush is a good way to apply it, because it can hold a lot of wash.

Drybrushing is when you get some paint on the brush and then rub most of it off on a tissue by bushing back and forth. When there is little left on the brush, you do small back and forth brush strokes on the area you want drybrushed. Be warned, this wrecks brushes not designed for it, so be careful.

Well put. Sorry about not being as clear. If ya have more questions put them up. Dakka's community is unmatched for guidance and quality.

Might be worth you going to your local GW or FLGS and just sitting down with an employee to talk through and demo some basic skills. In GW, if a redshirt thinks he can sell you a wash set after, he'll take the time... and the wash set is a good buy to be fair

I recomend the washes too. I mostly paint with Vallejo but got all the washes save the yellow one after trying them. Keep painting and you´ll get some basic tricks soon, and check the article section for further info.

Sad thing is where I live, we have no GW store, just a local Gaming store that only carries warhammer 40k on the side.

But i'm gonna take a trip to the big city soon, maybe i'll try to find a GW store there and pick up some stuff! Anyways more pics!

I ditched the idea to make my deffcopta duel blade, instead I went with duel chain swords! A few hand amputations from my extra ork boys (I had 6 with chainswords, how nice!) I wana add mroe stuff to it, just trying to think what else. Are twin linked shoota on deffcopters any good? Cuz i got two xtra big shootas I can throw on one)

Here they are, I still need to paint them, that's gonna be rough!

A better view probably

I added some sand to my base, trying to figure out to do sand, or graas. Also people say to drybrush the base sand, What color would be good for that? I want a bright army (I think as my orks as comical guys, So that is why I went bright)
Here is my nob

And here is his the rest of the ork boyz

Your scheme looks okay, but I still can't see them well enough to offer any praise or criticism.

Yeah, white takes a few coats to cover over black, You could mix in a little brown and/or yellow to make their gear a bit more worn looking, or just do a wash over it.

I like the fluff behind the theme. The SM would be terrified of their own medics after loosing a limb or two to a flurry of the same costume... >:~)

ya, right now your models looks just base coated, without any highlights...
this is easily fixed with a dip or wash, or just some simple drybrushing...
but from what i see its a promising start for a beginner

You paint the Ork on the deffkopta as normal. As for the Kopta, you really need to figure that out for yourself. You'll need to get the hang of applying coats of your paint to larger areas smoothly.

With regards to a couple of your questions:-

Painting Bases-

coat the base in pva glue
then when dry paint the sand with bestial brown (water this down - say three parts water to one part paint)
drybrush with Bubonic Brown
drybrussh with Bleached Bone
Most people then apply static grass in patches to the base.

Painting the Deffkopta:-

I would suggest drybrushing it with silver, this will then allow you to really define the model making it easier to apply colours. Also drybrushing is not the neatest forms of highlighting so doing it first wont spoil earlier painting

Your guys look greatno lies. You should use a wash though to make your orks look like they were painted by a pro (sort of). Devlan mud is a really nice wash. Just put it all over the model and it really brings out every part of it. There are some testimonies on the web if you can find them.

everyone says its great and it is. Even if you do not want to spend a few bucks at the moment i'd check it out anyways as it will be a good investment when you do decide to get it.

Also, I was basing my nobz with a 50/50 mix of the pvc glue, the and did not really want to stick, like a few days later the sand was falling off. Any ideas to get it to stick beter?

One layer of pure PVA then base it. Leave to dry, then put a watered down coat of PVA on top of the sand to act as a sealing agent.

Looks like they are coming along nicely. Thanks for posting them.

I really like the chain swords you put on the Deffkopta! Looks great, more so when you cover those hands up!
