(A new thread, because I though it'd be better than reviving the old one, considering I'm no longer working on anything that was up in it. If the mods disagree, feel free to merge the two.)

Alright, Dakkaites, it's been a while. A long while. Things have changed. I'm no longer working on my Space Sharks, or any GW stuff at all, due to a boycott, and sheer boredom with the product (although I may set this aside sooner or later to deal with the Space Hulk box I got for Christmas). Anyway, I've moved on to bigger and better things, and promptly fell flat due to my usual lack of motivation. This leads me to...

My New Year's Resolution! I resolved to paint a model every two weeks. Didn't matter the model, didn't matter the relation to my current project, so long as I got something done.

...Which I have already broken. Already more than two weeks into the new year, and I have not begun and finished a model. So instead, I'm gonna give you three models from my current project in varying states of doneness, and beg for forgiveness.

So, on to my project. At the moment I'm working on Wyrd Minis' Lady Justice and the Death Marshals (which I insist should be a band name), so that's what I'll be posting. The first, for your viewing pleasure, is a Death Marshal that's been "finished" since October. He was the first in the group that I did, so I'm still working on the formula, and I'll need to do a bit of fixing on him. He actually took second place in a Malifaux Single-fig Painting Competition, but I still think I could've done much better, so I'll be updating when I put some work into him. There are more pictures of him (and all the others) in the Dakka gallery, so click on them and look further (and vote )

Back

The next is Lady Justice herself. She's baseless herself, mostly thanks to a bad fall (that I fixed most of the damage, but if you see anything I missed, please point it out.) I'm working on pinning her into her base, so I'll update when I get that finished. I "finished" her fairly recently, after the new year I think, but she was begun before so she doesn't quite fulfill the resolution. The colors are a bit washed out, but this one showed better detail. Look at the flash pic in the gallery for the better colors.

And the hair

And the last, and most unfinished, is another Death Marshal. He has most of his coat and jeans done, but everything else needs work. I'm probably going to be doing the base as a piece of slate, but if anyone has an idea as to what they think would better, speak up. As for what's coming out of the coffin, I'm thinking Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Back

Alright, so I've got Justice and DM#1 to touch up, DM#2 to finish, and DM#3, The Judge, and The Executioner to start on, for this crew at least. After that, I got the two released models of Reaper's "Legion of Justice and Caeke", Torvin The Great from Enigma, and Space Hulk for Christmas. And I've been meaning to move into Trollbloods. Oh, and I'm juggling all this with a FoW commission. So expect to see this thread updated a fair bit.

Comments, Criticisms, Votes, anything at all is nice, so please reply.
Cheers, and thanks for reading!

They look good, but try a softer light for the next pics. Put a piece of paper or a thin white sheet between the light and the minis. It should help the glare and shadows.

I'm looking forward to seeing Torvin. That's a fantastic mini.

Thank you. Pictures and me have never been great friends, and any help or advice is greatly appreciated, I'll give that a try.

Which colours did you use for Lady Justice's hair, Sarazon?

The hair was a series of trial and error that started off with Terracotta, highlighted that with a mix of it and Snakebite, then a mix of Terracotta and Vallejo's Orange Fire (Came out about Blazing Orange), and finally a tiny tiny bite of pure Orange Fire at the top. That's as best as I can remember it, anyway. There was probably something else in there, but I really don't remember it as most of the hair was very... spur of the moment. I probably could have simplified that/done it slightly cleaner if I had more colors available, but I was working kinda limited.

And yes, Blightdrone, yes she does. I'm glad I kept her... boots from being the centerpiece of the model, though. I always have though it's the hair (a friend and I have had arguments about this).

An update within a reasonable amount of time? What madness is this!?

Yes, I have decided that getting things done is rather enjoyable, so you get more pictures of my Death Marshals.

First, Lady Justice. She has been pinned down to her base and is almost done. Just need to finish the base itself and do some touch-ups on her. Yes, she is very tall, especially with that base.

Second, I have done some work on the eldrich fire coming out of my Death Marshal's coffin. As I said before, I was going for a Raiders of the Lost Ark look, let me know if you think it worked.

With Flash

Without Flash

Next up, finishing these two (arm, base, touch-ups and a OSL attempt for the Death Marshal; touchups and base for Lady Justice), and starting work on my next (and last) Death Marshal.

Also, thanks again to The Good Green for the pointer about paper over the light, I think it helped quite a bit.

In lieu of comments, I will double post to give you this - Lady Justice and the second Death Marshal are now finished! (Probably)

Yes, probably. I am as of yet rather unhappy with the base on Lady Justice, and the pictures just make it look worse. Haven't yet decided what to do with it, or just leave it as is. Aaaaanyway, here we are.

Death Marshal 2

No Flash

The w/flash picture gives a somewhat better view of the OSL (which, this zoomed in, looks a lot chalkier than I thought it did) - http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/77494-Death%20Marshal%202%2C%20flash.html

Lady Justice

No Flash

After much trying, this was basically the only good picture I could get of her without the flash. I need a better camera/picture setup.

Flash - http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/77496-Lady%20Justice%20w%252F%20flash.html
This one shows the base, and you can probably see why I'm not happy with it. Also, I've already fixed the chip on her leg, so don't bother pointing that out.

Group shot of what I've got done

Strangely enough, in this picture most of what I'm unhappy with in the photos fades away. Perhaps I should take more from this distance. Anyway, you can see the base again, it just looks... there. As I said, the pictures make it worse, but it doesn't really add anything to the model.

Anyway, as usual comments, questions, ect. please share them.

You' ve got a nice start for a Malifaux crew there, like the coherent scheme and the unnatural hue of the death marshall skin.

Taking pics of minis is demanding on the set up and especially the lights used. I've tried many different lamp set ups and ways of taking pics for couple of years and in the autumn I finally found one that enables me to take decent pics. So don't give up and experiment with different lights and camera settings.

the contrast of the ghosts(?) coming out of the coffin conflicts too much with the jeans, prehaps change the extreme highlights for a green colour, still ghostly and it doesnt clash with the great work w/ the jeans

keep up the good work

Since you commented on my Malifaux I'll comment on yours as well.

I like your stuff, although (correct me if I'm wrong) if you layered the highlights instead of drybrushing them ie; Lady Justice's hair and the coffin "flames" are mostly where this is needed then that'll improve the look.

Having said that, the Death Marshal's cloaks and jeans are nicely done and the colour schemes work well.

(I will echo the previous suggestion to turn the flames green though, a wash / glaze or two would sort that out.)

Most importantly, keep going and promoting this fine miniature line!

Mister Feral - You picked out the two places where I did drybrush the highlights instead of layering them. I'll try to cut down on that from here on in.

As for the flames, the more I look at them, the more I agree with you guys. I'll probably sit down and do... something with them. Maybe start with green, instead of blue, and work my way up. I'd like to keep the light gray/white as the final highlight, though.

And to everyone, thanks for the comments. Please, keep 'em coming!
