What would a space marine do if he was the last surviving member of his chapter

How did he alone survive, my thoughts were along the lines of :- severally wounded whilst heroically protecting the Chapter banner, he's finally overwhelmed by his wounds and falls unconscious, left for dead he's later discovered by friendly force's and nursed back to health.

Would he be the first of a new chapter, commit suicide, or start some heroic quest to avenge his fallen comrades, or would the inquisition have it in for him.

I remember a story from about a survivor of the Scythes of the Emperor from the Space Crusade Game, I was wondering what happened to him?

Depending on his skills, he could end up becoming a member of the Inquisition or Deathwatch, or just consolidated into another chapter.

Yeah that seems about right.

Most chapters have a home base. Assuming he did, he would then return to base, and train a squad of initiate scouts as their sergeant. They would then become marines, and seek out more feral recruits until they had at least a company. I would also assume the last marine would become the chapter master.

The other option, is that the last marine was a member of a crusading chapter, like Lamenters. Crusading chapters have no home base, and therefore can't recruit to replenish numbers until their crusade is finished. In that case, he would have to team with another chapter until his crusade is finished, or die trying on his own.

If the marine was an apothecary and had geneseed stocks he could rebuild the chapter himself. Otherwise he'd need help.

Generally these chapters just die and a new one is made looking at the canon.

They'd probably be drawn into the Deathwatch. If they were a specialist, perhaps send to another chapter to train scouts in their skills. If their chapter has parent or successor chapters, though, I can see them being taken in as a full brother.

I wonder what would happen with the marine if he was apothecary and as far as I know geneseed is stationed in the most armored building in the fortress monastery.

If a chapter is reduced to 1 single marine, it will be disbanded.
The =I= will have a look at the case and the ad biologis may investigate any failures in the geneseed.

So the single survivor may:

- start a suicide mission on his own
- get recruted for the =I=
- find a new home within a brother chapter
- turn his back at the imperium

a rebuild is not possible due to the lack of geneseed. So if they do not extract the geneseed from the dead bodies, the chapter is finished.

It's more likely that he'd join the Deathwatch or a similar chapter to his previous one. This would make an excellent charachter for a Chapter from my own point of view.

He'd probably do that on his own accord. The nature of marines tells us he'd want to die with the rest of his chapter.

Unless he was part of a chapter say the successor of the Blood Angels, or what have you one mentality is yes wishing to die with the rest of his chapter the other could possibly be go on a revenge crusade by joining deathwatch or possibly going Chaos.

Anyway, personally imho iwst he would go mad with grief and lauch asuicidal one man guerilla crusade against the killer of his brothers.

It would be pretty bleak. Recreation of a chapter becomes difficult once you begin to lose companies, let alone all of them. A parent (or successor) chapter may harvest the geneseed and rebuild, but a single survivor rebuilding on his own? I don't think so. The possibilities are nearly endless. Given the vast expanse of the universe we're dealing with, just about anything could happen.

Only one option... Vengance.

Deathwatch would tool him up.

Well space marines would like to still be a service to the Imperium. Its not like a lone spacemarine would go commit suicide he would want to save his chapter's geneseed which he carries inside of him.

well it really does depend on his rank. If he was like a standard marine BOOM SENT TO A NEW CHAPTER of course take gene seed first
if he was a scout, well same thing, if he was like a captain or chapter master, then they get to pick
promotion, new chapter, or rebuild your old chapter.
