Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Well i would definitely say tau should be out they are very bland IMO. As for BTs or SMs it is up to you as they are basically the same. Codex wise BTs are extremely out of date but if you have a BT army you could use it as "counts as" SM if you like the look of the BTs.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Get the BTs, because they look cool and they're the only one you bothered to get pics of.

That's an odd way of asking what army to start. You obviously have some enthusiasm for them, however. You have to ask yourself if they really appeal to your playstyle though. If you'd rather sit and shoot, Tau is more your thing. If you want to run around chopping stuff up, Templars are up your alley. If you want a comfortable middleground, Codex Marines are the obvious choice.

Codex Marines are a shooty army.

Templars can shoot, but it'll be mostly vehicle-based guns:
- Vindicators
- Land Raiders
- Landspeeders of various types
- Razorbacks

BTs still hold up fairly well currently. They can field one of the nastiest units there is too: sword brethren assault terminators with lightning claws and furious charge. 4 strength 5 power attacks each reroll to hit AND to wound at initiative 5. That preferred enemy vow is just sick and wrong.

Personally, I think you should pick the one thats the most visual appealing to you. It's not what I did though, so for the moment, play with that army until you get the rules of the game down, then continue on to BT.

I started with a Tau army, and I like playing them yet for some reason now I am really wanting a Black Templar army. Love the fluff, love the color scheme and most importantly I want to experience the game's assault phase without getting it handed to me.

Marines are the easiest army to learn to play with and the BTs are the best looking models.

BTs can field shooter squads and assault squads, the only thing you really lose out on is the Librarians and the SMs don't need them.

Off the top of my head: no librarians, no whirlwinds, no devastator squads, no drop pod assault rules (we don't get the 1/2 on turn 1, rest on subsequent turns), certain Razorback and Dreadnought loadouts, no digital weapons, no scouts, no sternguard, no iron clads, no combat squading units, no frags and kraks included in the base costs of troops, and our stormshields are only 4++ instead of 3++.

These are all things I can live with though. We get the Vows from the Emperor's Champion. We get 5 man squads that can carry a heavy weapon, Righteous Zeal, 20-man Crusaider squads (24 with attached chaplain and cenobytes), can field 5 10-man terminator squads (not counting any attached IC's), and all of our troops can have BP+CCWs.

Fair trades, in my opinion.

Black Templar with the amazing ability to make the entire army get re-roll to hit or wound or whatever craziness they want.

Also, a land-raider army with blessed hull is a sure-fire way to insta-kill any Dark Eldar player and put serious hurt on Eldar players.
