Just wondering if anybody on the forums is from the Raleigh area. There is a game shop about 15 minutes away from the university, but it is difficult for me to make it there every Monday.

Hey there.
I just moved from Cary an hour east to Wilson, NC.
Here's the scoop:
1. Hangar 18 Hobbies: http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=Hangar18hobbies - they don't have a website, but they have a yahoo group that you can join to communicate with the members of the group. This is the newest store in the area, and has been open since November. The store owner (Bryan) is very friendly, and determined that his store is going to be miniature-centric; which is an anomaly in NC; every store is trying to be a jack of all trades and cater to everything. To date, most of the events going on here are FoW related, and the 40k players are newer. Their first league is coming up, and there have been no 40k tournaments, nor plans for any right now - Bryan would rather focus on expanding inventory and bringing players in (although I think an advertised 40k tournament would do that well) *shrugs*
2. All Fun and Games: http://www.allfunngames.com - if you don't have a GPS, plug their address into mapquest. The store owner's name is Vivian. She's a very nice lady, but not a fan of miniature gaming; their store caters more to magic. There are some good 40k players there (make friends with Charlie, E.J., Mark) and their 40k gamers are teens-early 20s. The guy who runs all their 40k events (Mike) is a tyrant, and has a bad reputation. Tournaments here are something to be careful of; he makes interesting house rules that are sometimes ridiculous. For a college age kid, this is probably the place for you to go to find like-minded and similarly aged players. Monday nights are their 40k nights, and around here, leagues are the thing to do rather than tournaments.
3. SciFi Genre: http://www.scifigenre.com/store/ - this is in Durham. They're the only ones with actual forums. The TO here (Shane) is very easy going and laid back. There's a regular group here from Duke (or whatever college is there), and some older folks; I've only gamed there a couple of times, but it was pleasant each time. The store is actually a front attached to a warehouse that exists because they had to have a walk-in store for their warehouse to qualify for something or another. There aren't many tournaments here either...the triangle area is *REALLY* dry for organized events.
4. Mind Games: http://www.youwannaplay.com/ - bad website, not even an address or phone number - you can send them an e-mail asking for that stuff though. Mind Games is in Greenville, which is an hour and a half away. They have a 40k tournament every third weekend of every month. Their crowd is younger as well (teens and 20s), although one of their players (TJ) is probably one of the best players in North Carolina - if you want a challenge, that's who you want to game with. The owner is more card-game oriented as well, but several of the employees play 40k, so there's usually a game to be had there. If you're a RAW player, there are house rules here you're going to have trouble with (example: They don't believe transports count as a unit).
5. The Game Connection: http://www.thegameconnection.com/ - Knightdale is 30 minutes east of Raleigh. This is a small store. The owner (Ron) is the absolutely nicest guy I've ever met. The crowd that games there is older (40+) for the most part with a few exceptions. The gaming group "Lords of War" are based here, and despite being the closest gaming scene for me in Wilson, I don't game there anymore because the crowd is hyper-elitist and unfriendly to outsiders. In fact, their gaming group is undergoing a "cleansing" right now and is going to require membership dues for the privilege of being a member. As much as I like the store, the 40k players there keep me away. In fact, I got some recent updates from friends and I don't know anyone respectable who is willing to game with their 40k crowd anymore.
6. Game Shack: http://www.greenvillegameshack.com/ - this is the other gaming store in Greenville. I tend to do most of my gaming here now; the owner and the crowd are 20s - 30s, with a few on either end of that spectrum (my age group), and the owner is the only one out of all the stores I've listed that plays 40k. His employees are avid 40k players as well, and there's usually something 40k going on - Greenville is a college town, so there's plenty going on between the two stores, although there's quite a bit of animosity between them unfortunately.
That's pretty much it within your driving distance; there are stores in High Point, Columbia SC, etc...but that's a bit further away.
Hope it helps!

Best thing to do is to join the Yahoo Group and ask around. I don't think he's having "set" dates, and I'm thinking about seeing how many people would be interested in doing a sort of "Tale of 4 Gamers" to start drawing folks in for Warhammer Fantasy.
Another thing to note is they ARE doing Forge World group orders, if you're interested.

I'd kind of like to learn Fantasy, but this isn't the area for it I don't think - there's not even enough 40k action going on. ><
If I could only get people to play for small stakes instead of for fun to put more of an eye to playing well, life would be grand.

Oh, I'm well aware it's not really the area.
Years back, Larry over at Hobby Masters let me run the Lustria campaign. People hollered and hollered and hollered they wanted to play.
First campaign meeting?
Me and one other guy.
We broke out the Warhammer Skirmish books and did some wacky scenarios. Including:
How many points of an opposing army CAN a Waywatcher Lord and a unit fo Waywatchers kill before they get to assault?
The answer may surprise you!

Alpharius, that's not 6 stores in an area, that's more like 6 stores in the state. I think there's two more (High Point and Wilmington) but both of those are out of reach for a college kid from Raleigh unless he wants to embark on a serious drive. As it is, Greenville is almost two hours away. And more importantly....having 6 hobbying stores doesn't necessarily mean that you have six 40k friendly stores. =p
@OP: Mindgames has a 40k tournament every third Saturday of every month. Might be worth a visit for you.
For now, All Fun and Games has the closest collection of 40k gamers, but it will be interesting to see what happens at Hangar 18 Hobbies, since they are focused on miniature gaming specifically.
*EDIT*
Alpharius, another note. I lived in Jacksonville, FL before moving to NC. There where 4 stores within the greater metropolis area, and at the time, there was something 40k going on at one or another of the stores pretty much every weekend. *THIS* area really sucks for organized events. I haunt their calendars and phones looking for a reason to go to their stores and spend money, and there's so little going on. All Fun and Games has a Monday night league, Knightdale does the same (or used to), SciFi has nothing, Hangar18 has nothing yet, Mind Games might have a league, Game Connection has nothing...
So your choices here are basically to game on Monday nights. Saturdays are reserved for card-gamers pretty much across the board. Not a single store in the area has ANYTHING 40k related going on in the next freakin' month (or in the near future) because of magic releases, and worldwide events, and stuff.

All Fun n Games has 40k Mondays, most of which are league players, but they do have people going in for pick up games. Also, if you call ahead to the store they will set up a table for you and some people to play.

Like Dash said--there's 6 stores in the *state*.
But out of those, there's maybe half actually worth going to. The problem is that some of the stores start up as one thing, get frustrated and then turn and do something COMPLETELY different.

There's more than six in the state.
In the Triangle Area there are 4, used to be 6 until Lost Goblin Games and Hobbymasters closed.

Indeed - I listed the four in the triangle area, and noted that Greenville had two, High Point (area) had one - possibly, and that Wilmington might have one. Charlotte has nothing - they have to go down to Columbia SC to game. Exactly where are the others I pray ask?

*shrugs* I don't live in Charlotte, so I can't say. I've done extensive internet searching to no avail looking for some action, and my friends in Charlotte also say that there's nothing anywhere for them to go to. Its a bit frustrating actually. And with Raleigh having 4 reasonably distanced stores...comparing to what one of my friends on the West coast was telling me last night, where he's got 3 stores in commutable distance, and between the three of them there are two 40k RTTs per month, and two Fantasy RTTs (not to mention six GTs this year within easy driving distance)
Just makes it feel barren out here.

I haven't paid much attention to the 40k gaming scene at The Game Connection, though I do recall one of the main "Lords of War" guys listing the rules for "their" league which were pretty much 'Must be WYSIWYG and Painted and if you win the league with an army, we don't let you use it in the competitive leagues/tourneys we do'. No, not retire the list. Retire the army. Yeah.
HOWEVER! If you have any interest in learning or playing Fantasy, the group that plays there every Wednesday evening is very happy to have new people join and will gladly teach you the game. They have a Yahoo group, border_princes, and typically set up any non-Wednesday events there as well as messages concerning the current escalation league.

PS scifi genre does have a good amount of organized gaming -- there are usually monthly tournaments, although they tend to not get promoted very well. The next two months are fantasy tournaments, and so the summer rounds begin in April.
I will try and remember to mention anything that happens there, as our last promoter has since moved away.. =/

i have started playing at parker, banner, kent and wayne recently and its a decent gaming scene. There are 40k games going on there almost every sat and some other days a week, and a tourny just about every two months. The only time 40k gets pushed out the door is once every two months for a fantasy tourny as far as i can tell.
last tourny i went to check out was about 8 tables and 16 players with half a dozen other avid players just watching having shown up too late in the day to participate.(such as myself)
I do miss the days of warzone down in the university area (UNCC) and even longer ago when we had a gamesworkshop 11 mins from my house at concord mills mall(think it closed in 01?)
