Yeah, that Concord Mills store wasn't open long. Serves GW right for putting a store in a mall, that is less than 2 miles from a NASCAR raceway. "Hey kids! You wanna go play with toy soldiers? Or go see cars drive fast and get in wrecks?" Real no-brainer there.

I should add that the Game Connection in Knightdale should probably be considered off-limits.
There's always been a bad collection of cheats there, but the store owner is now letting them decide who is allowed to play there and who isn't. I've not a single friend left who will play there or enter the store (combination of threats, having their army (not their list, their entire race) disqualified because it was overpowered, being cheated)...
Yeah; shop and game elsewhere. I have a backbone, and have stood up for myself there, and my wife and I have had arguments about me going there ever again because she thinks that a couple folks there will attempt violence.

Are you serious? The last time I was in there, it struck me as a really great spot. the store owner was nice and I had friendly conversation with the gamers in there. What happened in the past 6 months to change all that?

Store owner is really nice. Really, really nice. However, he has no backbone and lets people do what they want there - the collection of "Lords of War" have done a good number on making respectable gamers not play there anymore or quit 40k altogether.

Actually...Bob Eldridge just announced the start of an Escalation league over on the Yahoo group.
Bob Eldridge wrote:Hi all,
The Escalation League will begin on the weekend of March 20/21 and will start
at 750 points and go up by 250 points every two weeks. While I will run sessions
on both Saturday and Sunday to accomodate as many people as possible, a player
will receive only one score for each weekend, which wll be his BEST score out of
all games played. Scoring is as follows:
1 point for showing up and playing - regardless of whether you win or lose.
1 point if you played to a draw.
2 points if you won your game.
1 bonus point if your army was completely painted.
Therefore the maximum possible points to receive for a single session is 4
points.
The league will end two weekes after the week we play 2000 point games with an
Apcalypse final game which will not count for prize purposes
There will be three prizes awarded at the end of league as follows:
High Scorer (i.e. League Champion)
Best Sportsman (chosen by vote of all participating players)
The Coveted Next-to-Last Trophy (the player who has the SECOND lowest score)
Many thanks to Hangar 18 for furnishing the prizes.
As the organizer and rules arbiter, I will not be eligible for any of the prizes
- I'm playing for the fun of it.
You must play one army throughout the whole league, although obviously you may
change your individual list from game to game. In other words, if you start the
league with Tyranids you may not change to Blood Angels after a few weeks, so
choose your army carefully.
All army lists must be in legible hard copy for each session, and shown to your
opponent upon request. They may be hand-written or typed or generated using a
list-builder program.
All army lists for league games must conform to the following rules:
The army must be chosen from any ONE official GW Codex. No allies are permitted,
and no third-party or Forgeworld Army Lists may be used. You must use the most
recent version of your Codex.
The army may not contain any models which have the "UNIQUE" attribute. This
means that NO named or special characters are permitted, neither HQ nor squad
upgrade characters. Obviously this rule will not be in effect for the Apcalypse
game.
The army may not contain any Superheavy vehicles, flyers, or Gargantuan
creatures. Again this will not apply for the Apocalypse game.
If you are interested, please let me or the guys at the store know what army you
want to play.
Feel free to ask any questions
Thanks for your interest, and I hope to see you all on May 20.

The Greenville Game Shack has a pretty good Warmachine / Horde following. I don't know any of those guys, and they play on a different day than I'm ever there, but you should call up to the store to make inquiries. Kelly (the owner) is who you want to talk to.

Hangar 18 Hobbies:
I have been specifically asked by the store owner not to join their league specifically because I'm "too competitive" when my primary purpose was to help get my wife back into 40k and a league that both of us could attend could be a fun way to do it. Unfortunately I've been deemed not a fit in the store before you even play a single game there.
Excuse me if that sounded mangled, a friend of mine who I was commiserating with wrote so it wouldn't have a personal touch from me.

I'm sure Game Theory would love to have you!
Olde Raleigh Village (back side)
3120 John Humphries Wynd
Raleigh, NC 27612
(919) 787-4449
They opened this Spring. The inspiration for Game Theory began last November when Bo - one of the guys in my weekly D&D group - mentioned that it would be Awesome to start a game store. Like, a really cool game store, where folks could enjoy lots of creature comforts in a friendly atmosphere. A second member of our group - Rob - got on board almost immediately, and then soon after Bo's close friend Ethan became the third partner. 4 months later, their store opened it's doors. The three guys put forth a tremendous effort in the design, planning and build-out of the store. There is a wall of Warhammer Fantasy/ 40K miniatures, and a huge Citadel paints and painting accessories selection.
Their store is already a huge success but there is still room for more gamers to call it "home". They have a Warhammer 40K/Fantasy day every Sunday, but it hasn't really caught on yet. I get the feeling that once 40K players see what Game Theory has to offer them, they'll be convinced. The trick is getting them to give the store a try. Recently, Apoc-Eclipse held their semi-annual event there:
It seemed to work out very well and I know that Bo and Rob enjoyed having them!
We moved to the area in late 2009. My 16 year old son started 40K just 5 months ago but he is completely hooked and has recently gotten his best friend hooked as well. Thanks to some odd jobs and my bartering relationship with Shawn at Blue Table Painting, Garrick has accumulated and painted +/- 3,500 points of Space Marines army and is now building a Tau army. His game skills are of course a work in progress but the kid is very dedicated and eager to learn. He's at Game Theory 1-2 nights a week. As for myself, I've never played 40K (mostly D&D), but Garrick has convinced me to give it a go. I bought an arseload of Chaos Daemons and painting supplies and I've been having ALOT of fun painting. I doubt I'll have a complete army painted before August, but I'm a quick study when it comes to strategy games so I look forward to some challenging 40K games at Game Theory!
Cheers,
Sean

Yes, but Creedmoor Rd has turned into Edwards Mill Rd by the time you reach Olde Raleigh Village. Hope to see you there!
Google Map Directions
Game Theory has a Meetup group they use for all their event functions. More 40K members would be awesome.
Sarigar, I look forward to meeting you! One of the owners of Game Theory (Rob) was in the Air Force years ago. Abe, one of the employees at the store (also a member of my D&D group) was in Army PSYOPS until Adult Onset Still's Disease forced him out. He is pretty into Warmachine but I'm hoping to convert him to 40K.

For those interested, a new store near the old Sports Zone opened up about last week in Cary. It's called "Gamer's Armory".
Their in-house selection is limited and the owners aren't obvious warhammer fans, but they're very nice and into a tremendous amount of other wargames. My friends and I started playing 40k over there recently because their gaming tables are the best I've seen in the area.

i have started playing at parker, banner, kent and wayne recently and its a decent gaming scene. There are 40k games going on there almost every sat and some other days a week, and a tourny just about every two months. The only time 40k gets pushed out the door is once every two months for a fantasy tourny as far as i can tell.
last tourny i went to check out was about 8 tables and 16 players with half a dozen other avid players just watching having shown up too late in the day to participate.(such as myself)
PBK&W is my home store, and a GREAT place!! They used to have a tourney on the last Sat of every month; but recently the smarter guys got out-voted in favor of a "club-day". So now they do a tournament every season.....
Gonna try it out, might have to go elsewhere for the uber-competitve goodness Im looking for.
I Recently went to the CRAZY PIT just outside of Charlotte, it's in a fencing academy (plenty of space), and the fellows are pretty cool.
Ive also gamed at Hobby Town (Hickory) Limited space & 3 tables
and Time Tunnel (Hickory) Limited Space & 2 tables

Sorry for the necro, but I'm curious about how the current 40k scene in Raleigh is. I went to Game Theory a few days ago and talked to whoever it was that was working at the time, who said that their turnout for 40k isn't real consistent. I want to start actually playing, rather than just playing on vassal, and I'm wondering where the best place around here to do that is.

Hey Sir Pseudonymous,
Most of the previous posts about the stores are still pretty accurate. I've visited Game Theory a couple of times; they seem to be focused on Magic and other non-40k games. All Fun'n'Games has a 40k scene on Mondays (I believe) and they have a lot of gaming space, Hangar 18 Hobbies has a Escalation League going on right now, and their owner is really creative when it comes to terrain. Gamer's Armory is a nice store that's just getting going, and they've had a 40k tournament recently.
I personally frequent Gamer-s Armory and Hangar 18 Hobbies since they are the closest to me, though I could probably use the prodding of some Dakkaites for me to get out and play more often (as my armies are in various stages of completion, I don't play as much as I'd like). Seeing as there are a number of decent stores with different populations in each, I think all the Raleigh-area Dakka members should friend each other and send out messages when they're interested in getting in a game, that way we won't have to rely so much on specific days for each store's 40k day.
Hope that helps

Another Shameless plug: Scifi Genre has a good, somewhat regular group of 40k gamers. They are not the most competitive, and certainly not the most painted group, but still there is a decent following in a laid-back atmosphere. It all depends what you are looking for. If you like tournaments, they are having a 1000pt. mini GT at the end of January.
