Ok, I'm starting my new Guard army and I want it to be unique from most other armies.
My guardsmen will either have Cadian respertatoirs heads or Pig Iron System trooper heads.
And some kind of backpack.
Unfortuntley Forge World is horribley expensive almost 50 bucks per a squad! On the other hand
Didgets from The Ammobunkers 22nd Drogan have almosted changed my mind on them. He is also a major isperation for these guy's
http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/7018571/1/

I have a few ideas for the theme of the army.

Heavy armor: Russes, Russes and more Russes. Basicly Several vet squads in chimeras with lots of Russes in support.

Medium armour: Lots of Chimeras/Hellhounds. As many Armored Fist squads as I can get in the list, with minimal heavy support.

Armour with Air support: As the title.

I'm currently leaning twoards a Heavy armour army.
I don't have a points goal for the army.

Because this obviously a Mech force i would want to convert Senitels into light Tanks. I already have an idea for this.

I'd like to hear any ideas you guys have on this before I start on the army. So bring on the crazy random cool ideas! ( Please keep in mind I'm a mediocre painter at best... ) I will be posting some ideas as they come to me.

This will be a labour of love, so I really don't care how complex stuff is ( I'm asking for it Dun dun duh...)

Thanks,
Dragonfire

Everyone uses Pig Iron heads. Those FW respirator heads are cool though. The cool thing about the army you linked is the camo though, not the converting. They just used a simple camo pattern across the entire model to make them look more realistic.

In the interest of money and effectiveness, I'd go for veterans in Chimeras as the bulk of your army. The respirator heads are too cool to stick on regular Guardsmen, and the points costs for vets should keep your model count low. Kit each squad up with 3 meltaguns and a democharge and you've got an effective, mobile list.

so basically your list is going to be mech spam?

and the one reply tells you to go for melta vet spam!

im not sure if you guys understand the word 'unique'

2 off the most common guard armies are chimera castles and flying circus
-both unsurprisingly powerbuilds
a great way to make them look different is a unique paint scheme or model them in an interesting way.

my friend is currently making a guard list based on a forward recon list
-as few tanks as poss
-light infantry
-sentinels
-no ordnance
-no melta/plasma spam

is your 'unique' sentinel conversion going to be a warthogish using the SM landspeeder???

Build and play what you like. It doesn't have to be "unique" if it makes you happy to play it.

You're already setting yourself apart by making a Guard army at all. Look at the units available, find a tactic that resonates and run with it. Build an army for you and individuality will take care of itself.

My own company uses a combination of massed infantry and artillery with a couple mechanized vet squads as backup. This is an evolution of an army concept that began as a simple massed infantry gun line under the previous codex. You probably don't want to use this concept because it involves a lot of infantry.

On a somewhat similar theme, an army from Armageddon sector would probably use a lot of Chimera derivatives - Mech infantry backed up by artillery and directly supported by hellhounds.

OH Oh me!!!

play zombie guard with lots and lots of penal legion and conscripts (with chankov of course)

(though its what im doing but if your not in NZ it doesn't really matter does it)

close combat guardsmen for the win!

ps rotting flesh is real easy after painting 50 plague bearers lol

or old school when you cpuld take mutants (pretty much beastmen) and you can use those sweet new minotaurs which are coming out as orgrns (super mutants if you will)

bestigors with lasguns

come to think of it I may add them to my guard army

Da brain juice is overflowing again!!

I wish my lawn was emo...
Then it would cut itself.

In the end, SoB are uppity female canines who enjoy their faith in the emperor so much, I'd say they themselves are no longer truly human. They've given up normal life in exchange to become bolter-bitches.

Lessee...

My first guard force was zombie guard, followed by a zombie armored company.

Then I did the Estonian Drop Troops using Warzone models.

Then I did the Inquisition guard using Empire militia.

My current guard army are Tallarn Mech Vets.

So there are a lot of ways to do this. I have an idea for using the Perry Bros Napoleonic plastics for an army (or at least the backpacks and heads) or Void plastics as Arbites. Both are on hold until Wargames Factory Greatcoats come out then I'll pick one.

With some many new entries on Plastics (Warlord, Wargames Factory, Perrys, and I think 1 or 2 more) and all the companies that sell heads (Pig Iron, Microarts, Ramshackle, Alphaforge) there are lots of ways to make an army unique.

For my senitels something along the lines of this http://web.archive.org/web/20071001225855/us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/imperialguard/painting/tankette/default.htm

Raxmei: Well the main tactic I was thinking of was a squadron of Russes with battlecannons charging into the enemy with chimeras backing them up.
And a manticore as fire support.

The paint scheme would be either Green Camo or gray fatiques and blue armour.

MOMUS: I take it the flying circus is lots of Valkyries/Venddetas?
I want to take sevrael Sentinels because I like them, still I like my tanks

Raxemi:

crazykiwi: Bah! nurgle scum!

Anyway i was thinking of Maybe 3 vet squads In some tooled up chimera's as the start of my troops. I already have to russes though...

Thanks,

Then I have no clue what you're going for. Because if you want a "modern" looking force, you cannot get any closer than the Elysians(without resorting to using actual, modern miniatures).

Elysians have armor that looks like oven mitts. I've never been a fan of them.

You could try Maxmini.eu for some interesting conversion bits. Shotguns, M-16s, and so on and so forth: http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=12&sort=20a&page=1

thank you.

Well I was thinking of lasguns kinda like this http://www.themodernwarfare2.com/mw2/multiplayer/weapons/assault-rifles/tar-21/
The lasguns would probley have scopes and Scilencers + laser sights.
Missile launchers kinda like a Javelin or Like a A-TM4.

Lascannons would be the same.

You're aware that most Lasguns you see have integral scopes, right?
And that "laser sights" would be ridiculous, yeah?
And you can't really "silence" an energy weapon, for that matter.

Yes i'm aware that they have internal sights. As to laser sights well not really if you think about it, just put the red dot on the enemy and shoot....

I actullay think you could at least quite the cracking noise it makes when it fires.

Not really, because it's the fact that it superheats the air when it fires.

But the laser sights thing is, like I said...just silly. Laser sights are configured for bullet drop. Energy weapons don't, theoretically, have "bullet drop".

If you *really* want to make them more interesting, remember that part of the Elysian's lasgun pattern is that it has a built in flashlight that runs off the lasgun's powercell.

Yeah, because then they'd be twin-linked.

We don't exactly know that. Does anyone know how to make a bullpup lasgun like a Tar-21.

We really need a highfive emoticon...

And yes, Dragonfire. We do know "exactly that". The fact that a Lasgun runs off an energy charge, rather than solid slugs superheated tells us that.

It's kind of difficult to give you ideas because you're *really* all over the place in regards to them. You want "modern looks, with bullpup lasguns"--but don't want Elysians(which were made *expressly* to cater to the crowd who felt that the Cadians and other Guard regiments to this point looked too early World War I/WWII, with some futuristic stuff tacked on).

It's no big deal, but it's kind of hard to make suggestions when you're not even sure what you want outside of "ARMORED VEHICLES!"

And quite frankly, Sentinels work *far* better than Tankettes in the ideal of the Guard. But that's really all I've got.

You said that you might use the pig iron system trooper heads? i was about to do the same, but then i found these babies on the last page of head sprues : http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/hd7-heavy-infantry-closed-head-sprues-p-23.html
I recommend these as they fit the ultra-tech theme and are awesome in general. I'd lead you to my painted examples if i wasn't so lazy and had uploaded some...

I assault with my guardsmen, why dont you?

Accually, if you read the fluff and books, alot of long las rifles (snipers) are silenced. Not 100% sure how it works, but evidently it does.

I know I went off-topic, but yeah, I felt it needed to be said.

Okay i've been thinking and maybe a sort of Airborne Cadians would be more realistic and a nice camo scheme.

Somethng like this http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk133/cougarace/DSC02933.jpg

So now it's either heavy armor or airborne guard... Damn I change my mind so much.

I'm not really sure on what camo to pick. Because I usually play on a grass table I figur forest camo?
