Hi all, I currently have no local gaming group and as such havent had a game of WHFB or 40K sonce 4e 40k.

I was thinking of going to the "local" GW store 50 miles away to try and get a game.

My only worry is im 26 and think it might be uncomfortable with all the kids etc.

does anyone have any tipa experiance with this?

Cheers

Give them a ring first. That way, you can find out whether anything special is on, if they run a Veterans Night, whether or not there are local clubs which might suit etc.

Plus even if you can only make it down on a day that isn't Veterans or something, they might see about recruiting you an opponent. Better than making a 100 mile round trip and not getting a game!

The trip isnt a bother, we go there for shopping once or twice a month

Veterans night sounds interesting, im guessing this is a grown ups night in the shop?

Pretty much! Might be a few kids, but usually it's technically invite only to the under 16's.

Personally I think there's something a bit cringeworthy when people only have the hobby inside a games workshop store.

Don't get me wrong playing in store is fun meeting new people showing off armies etc. But nine times out of ten, well my store anyway has got a bit of a reputation for poor tabletop standards in store.

GW stores around here are pretty good. No sales pushes, no one touches others models without asking and if they do pick up a model and look at it it's usually by the base. The armies are generally painted alright, there may be the odd undercoat only, but that's only the new ones. Terrain is always good and it's never hard to find a pick up game.

Just call ahead and maybe go to the vet night thing like mentioned a few times before.

My experience has always been to make sure you don't play at weekends. I've been in my local GW at weekends to pick up some new paints etc and it resembled a cresh.

I do sometimes feel for the staff in there as they do have to put up with a lot!

well after a quick chat...

my local store has no night time events, is shut tues/wed now and there in a new smaller shop which has TWO tables!

Guess I wont be playing there, the next nearest, just under 90 miles away has a second gaming room, has sevral late nights and the local club plays there.

Time to move i guess

Time to find or start a local club!

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

@Keldon - I'm a similar age to you, and I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about plying in my local GW. It was FULL of kids yesterday! It IS kind of annoying - the tabletop standard of most of the models on show was dire, plus you have kids whose entire army they've brought to play with consists of 1 Bloodthirster, 1 Deamon Prince and 1 Soul Grinder! My local branch is pretty good though - they pair up the older players together.

I reckon your best bet is to try and persuade some of your RPG mates to give 40K a go - do you have more than one army? If so, paint up 2 armies and a load of terrain, then set up a battle for you and few mates over some beers. My (tiny) circle has added at least one brand new player that way.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

If you have a university near you, they will probably have a wargaming society. I know my university had a couple of players not at the university who used to come in and play.

Contact them and ask. The worse that could happen is they say no
