For me, it was to get objective army list critiques for my BT and guard.

EDIT: oh and also, a deep malice toward some R.A.W. rulings that I used to feel a need to argue against.

Discuss.

I joined mostly for the painting and modelling forum, but have found myself being a rules lawyer in the Fantasy forums lately.

My main purpose for being on dakka at all is to gain more knowledge of painting techniques, but articles and new tips have been sparse lately, hence my move towards rules clarifications.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Originally, to get some list feedback, read up on other lists and tactics, and get some rules clarifications. Getting suckered (and being an idiot and suckering myself) into dumb arguments and pissing contests is just part of the ride.

Lurked for a while and decided after all the useful stuff I picked up I better give something back.

I'm quite slow at giving back though as it's taken me 4 years to reach 500 posts. Go me!

Anyway...

I signed up as it seemed like a good 'middle ground' forum compared to many out there.

I'm happy to report that my favorite sections (the Painting and Modeling forums) have come a long way since I signed up, and that's mostly due to the hard work of a few individuals behind the scenes and, of course, the users who post their projects in there!

Now, much like Insaniak, Dakka keeps me connected and interested as 'real life' and lack of a local scene make any type regular gaming difficult...

I signed up because I was looking for Army list advice about my 3rd Edition Salamanders army (Which is why I have an SM-related user name while I now play Tau). Ended up getting into an argument with mauleed over something, and then just spread to more and more sub-forums like some form of insidious biological terror.

I joined because of H.B.M.C's review of Codex: CSM.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Ugh. 40kforums are terrible. I joined them first and I certainly regretted it. I was called close minded for some bs thing so I left. Most of the members were pretty douchey as well.

:edit: meant 40konline.

I joined because, when I first started Warhammer I looked around the online community. Fanpages/Forums are always good resources.

Dakka stuck because Warseer is garbage. Beyond that, the other big 40k pages are too niche to hang out on.

Dakka also is full of snobs, elitists, low-brow and vulgar people so I fit right in.
