I know its caused by waking up in the middle of rem sleep in which your paralyzed so you dont act out your dreams.
But its scary. Especially if your still half dreaming when you wake up.
Anyone ever have this happen to them?

It used to happen to me all the time, but it quit shortly after high school. I felt like I was really aware of what was going on outside, every little noise got my attention, and it seemed to go on forever, but could not have been more than a few minutes.

Forever alone

I've never woken up paralyzed, but I can wake myself up while dreaming.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

It's happened to me twice. It was pretty freaky. I could feel my heart beat slowly increasing to normal at which point I could move. Like warpcrafter said it felt like forever but it was probably just a couple of minutes or even a matter of seconds.

That happens to me all the time, especially when I'm sharing the bed, only it's usually with my entire arm. Generally have to lift it with my other arm into a position where the blood flows through it.

Never had the thing the op is talking about though.

some people get a form of this where they also have the part of their brain that tells them that they are in THEIR OWN BODIES turned off. It gives them a sensation that something is sitting on them.

All cultures have some form of demon attributed to this phenomenon.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

Only happened to me once. I was completely aware of everything around me, and could talk and move my eyes, but I simply could not move my arms, legs, or head. It wasn't as though anything was holding them down, I just could not for the life of me move them. Wore off after about 3 minutes, but it was damned scary, and I never want to experience it again.

That reminded me of something...I think i'm a mutant or something cause i very very rarely dream.
But, it was this one night (i think i was 11 or 12 at the time) i was sleeping and i woke up to go to the bathroom...i remember i was always scared of the darkness in the kitchen (bathroom was on the right on the way to the kitchen, and from the bathroom door you could see directly into the kitchen), so this one night i wake up and go to the bathroom...and i left the door open. And in the light going out of the bathroom i saw a silhouette or something and scared the crap outta me. I fell close to the bathtub, unable to move or even breathe and thought "Feth me, i gotta be dreaming" and then i heard the silhouette saying "you wish you were dreaming"

And then i woke up all shaking, sweaty and scared. Even now years later when i think about it still scares the crap out of me. Shish, weird stuff

It happened to me twice. The first time I thought I was dead and that's what dead felt like, and I was like "oh well, now what?" and then it wore off. freaked me out. The second time was more like "aw, not again...". It was a while ago though, back in college.

This doesn't sound quite the same, but I once woke up and was unable to move my legs. The rest of me was fine. I may have just slept on my legs wrong, but it took about half the day for them to recover. That was years ago and it never happened again, but I have always wondered how it could have happened.

Do you mean lucid dreams? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream

I get them from time to time and wake up feeling very happy and refreshed from the godlike power you feel you have in them.

I have the opposite of lucid dreams a lot. Like, I'll win the lottery or something great will happen in my dream and I'll think to myself "I'm so glad this is real and not a dream" then I wake up and I'm sad :(

I usually don't remember my dreams though, once I wake up by the time I'm done my SS&S I'll have forgotten whatever I dreamed about.

Has happened to me a few times, very scary feeling, my mind wakes up and I'm completely unable to move, not dreaming just unable to move. First time it happened I looked it up to check, but it never stops being a horrible feeling.

As someone who has "heard voices" I can say this kinda crap can be extremely frightening. I know for me personally I ended up talking to the voices, asking them to stop and why they were there. They responded that they were worries and stress that I had that I was bottling up and not releasing. I took the next day off, resolved the issues that I knew were bothering me but I was trying to forget as best I could and they went away. Your body sometimes has weird ways of communicating with you, so it may be something to consider

It happens to me on a non too regular basis. Trouble is i usually see things at the same time:

Once me and my girl were staying in a hotel in Barcelona, i had been asleep for about half an hour when i was suddenly awake, unable to move and could see a small child crawling out of the air vent with a knife in their hand.

Wasn't a fun experience.

I think Succubi and Incubi legends are related to this kind of phenomenon. Sod's law of course dictates that i suffer from the one that scares the piss out of me rather than the one that shags me :(

It has only happened to me once but it was not a nice feeling at all, I wasn't even able to breath in. It didn't help that the moment before I woke up I was dreaming that there was someone standing in the corner of my room, so that combined with the paralysis very nearly caused an involuntary bowel movement.

What was worse was when I woke up the morning after having a fall in work to find that I couldn't move my legs or feet, i wasn't even able to sit up. As it turned out I had trapped a nerve after falling on my arse and chipping my coxis. The feeling came back after a couple of hours but for a few minutes I genuinely thought that I had lost the use of my legs. Not good considering I was sleeping in an atic bedroom at the time!

Yeah, as others have said, it's sleep paralysis. Freaked me out the first time it happened. And yes, it's often combined with a feeling of a malevolent presence or dark shape sitting on you, which led to a lot of legends. I haven't had a case in years, but if it happens again, just relax. I felt like the symptoms passed quicker if I fought it less. The dark presence feeling also never happened again to me after the first time.

And yeah, Luna's talking about lucid dreams, which are powerful.

@Necros -- keep a pad of paper and pen by your bed. If you write your dreams down as soon as you wake up, you'll be able to capture the details and remember them better later too.
