So...what next? Probably a redux of Shogun or something...but is it possible to cram another period of history in there somewhere?
What I really REALLY hope for would be a Global Total War. I couldn't care less what time period it was (could be cavemen or whatever) just so long as Global Domination is actually POSSIBLE. What about a Modern Total War? (With all these nukes around it will probably last 15 minutes but meh).

Although that would be quite cool, it would be relatively static with little in the way of tactics ("ok chaps, walk slowly in close packed lines towards the enemy machine guns while our own artilery bombs us").
A better idea might be a WWII version, as battle was more fluid, although it still retained may fixed points of defence and fortifications seen in WWI, and not so much in the much more mobile warfare of more recent times.

I'd like to see either
First Choice) Shogun 2: Total War
Second Choice) Global Total War (WW2)
Third Choice) Chinese Total War, back in some interesting period of time in China's history, maybe even Mongol Total War.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

Personally, I think RTW is great as it is, apart form a few minor, minor glitches that could be fixed with a patch, it doesn't really need improving.
I think WW1/2 total war would be awesome, although I find it hard to imagine how they would integrate planes and para/bomb dropping.

Neither will I. I always loved how non-linear total war games were. Napolean seems to force you into set-piece battles. I don't want to re-live history, I want to totally screw it all up! IE, playing as sweden and colonizing all of America and India.
Where I want to see next? I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see Ancient China, during the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (favourite ps2 game EVER!) period. Wei, Wu, and Shu! Going at it! Plus all the minor kingdoms, and all the historical characters. It'd be nuts, and totally doable.

Ah, a man after my own heart. (Albeit one of a Swedish persuasion )
Honestly, I could care less as to what period it actually was to be based on, what I really hope for is a map that includes the ENTIRE wolrd. C'mon, World Domination by Torres Straight Islanders? Yes please.
More territories! More races! More Cities! More Armies! MOOOAAAARRR!!!!1!

My fav was Shogun out of all of them...Number 2 would be awesome.
Imagine...more ninja assassination.
Come to think of it...how about pirate theme or zombie theme? But maybe a bit too comical and not exactly period themes.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

As if Empire were historically accurate. I managed to conquer all of Central and South America after beating the Independance tutorial, using only my army led by George Washington.
Where in history did that ever happen?

Don't bother with Napoleon. It's an expensive mod with little freedom to do what you want, and Napoleons campaign feels very frustrating due to the fact that you're rushing to beat the turn timer.I might have reached the gates to Austria had my line infantry been mechanized.
On topic.. pfft, I don't know. It's feeling a little stale now. I'd go with WW1 as a natural progession of things, but i'd settle for a super detailed re-imagination of Shogun.

Yeah. I learnt from that Alexander the Great one. It's more fun if you feel like you have a comfortable amount of time.
I might have reached the gates to Austria had my line infantry been mechanized.
Mechanized Napoleanic Infantry. Sounds familiar...Imperial Guard?

I can imagine WW1 being incrdibly difficult to play becuase of the vast nature of the battles, and the massive range of the guns.

True, but the cannons in Empire were pretty l33t as it was. It would take a serious reworking of the cover system, and artillery would need to be deployed in the strategic map like a spy, in order to soften a coming assault.
The main problem with the Total War series is the battles themselves.
Rome: Engage with infantry, flank with cavalry.
Medieval: See above.
Empire: Form a 'V' shape battle line, fire, ...profit.
Sieges are equally clunky. I remember holding off over a thousand Romans with three units of greek hoplites who chilled out by the main gate, and surrounded the ONLY ENTRANCE to my fortress 'o doom with a wall of spearheads. Phalanx for the win.
I'm interested with where they take it. Empire recieved a lot of criticism for the bullsh!t diplomacy. Being turned down an alliance by the Crimean Khanate, who had no friends, one province, enemies on all sides and a burning port, AFTER being offered 20,000 florins to sweeten the deal does not make an impressive AI model. Hopefully the Creative Assembly will take a long hard look and realise what made Empire so underwhelming, and address the situation accordingly. You hear that Sega? Give me a job! I will sell you more games!

The AI issue was realized by Sega already. They basically said "Yea... We -might- have been high on something there... Or at least, we weren't sober."
Apparently, they improved the AI a bit in Napoleon, but a lot of it was also scripted in the Campaign, so if you studied the maneuvers of the battle before playing it, you'll already know what the AI will do and when.
I will give Empire -some- credit though, at least the AI knew which formations to use depending on what you attacked with - at least until you used some cheap, disposable cav to lure them into range of your gunline & grapeshot
