So, looks like we have a release date for the new Predator film, that being 7th July 2010.... linkage lies here
Not quite sure how much I'm looking forward to this. On the con side, it's a new addition to an 80's Franchise, which despite being a popular Hollywood activity these days, rarely bodes all that well (though having said that I quite like most of the efforts) particularly when said original Franchise is very much a Cult type film.
But then, on the brightside, it involves Robert Rodriguez (yay!) Troublemaker Studios (yay!) Danny Trejo (yay!) and Laurence Fishburn (yay!). Plus, it seems they are certainly going to ignore the AvP films (which are examples of ones I quite liked) and possibly even Predator 2. And another plus, it's NOT being billed as a ReBoot, just a belated sequel to the original, with the chance of an Arnie cameo if the big man himself agrees.
What do you reckon Dakka?

I love the alien/predator films. There's a special place in my heart for creature feature films and Sci-Fi is always a winner. I only hope that this movie makes up for Alien Vs. Predator 2... which was a huge disappointment. Alien vs. Predator was 'meh but the sequel was pitiful. How do you take an excellent plot device (the alien-predator hybrid) and ruin it in such an irredeemable manner? It boggles the mind. Maybe Predators will take us back to the roots of Predator. I also wouldn't mind getting a glimpse at a Predator homeworld.
Regardless of what happens... I will see this film. I reserve the right to berate it afterward but very few things would prevent me from seeing this in theaters.

Upon seeing the title I knew this thread was about Chris Hansen, medium-sized tanks or aliens I'm waiting for Avatar Vs. Predator. All the blue juice flowing freely as their wild hunt is unleashed.

Hah. I'd pay to see this and then I'd feel bad about watching a massacre for my own morbid enjoyment. The only thing better than an alien/predator movie would be a (extremely well funded) Starcraft movie. The lack of variety among the "aliens" isn't as fun as watching the Zerg/Tyranids. Please note that I say Zerg over Tyranid only because the Warhammer 40k universe is far too convoluted for a movie series. Only the hardcore fans would understand. Whereas a Starcraft movie is simple enough for most people to just jump into the storyline with little to no prior knowledge.

I dunno. Extra Galactic super predator species vs Space Empire of Man is pretty straight forward. Star Wars is easily as complicated (if not more so) these days to those who can be arsed to follow the stuff outside the films.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

It would be simple if that were the only factor to consider. The only way to simplify Warhammer 40k is to make a movie completely around a single battle. To focus on a broader spectrum would only convolute things by including multiple enemies and seemingly pointless battles (to the overall plot of the individual film). It's just too much for a single coherent storyline, in my opinion anyway. Whereas with Starcraft you're looking at 3 main factions each with basic goals and histories. Edit: Oh and, as far as Star Wars is concerned, no matter how many aliens George Lucas adds to the story the primary foe is always clearcut and obvious. I know the books add a lot more to the story than the movies but regardless there is rarely more than 3 important things happening at the same time in the Star Wars universe.

Just do as Star Wars did. Quick read through synopsis, and open onto a battle. Perhaps the IG just as they defeat the last of an Ork Waaagh!, then build the story from there.
But anyways, back to gibbering about Predators! Just watching Predator 2 right now (DG has just chinned the Pred).

As a diehard Alien/Predator/AVP fan, I can pretty much guarantee this film will suck. Ever since that dumbass Paul Anderson, the Predators haven't been the same. I mean...it's being directed by the guy that did Spy Kids. And the main character is being played by Topher Grace.
I'm more excited about the Alien prequel that is actually being done by Ridley Scott .

I agree,AVPR is on my personal 10 worst films list.
Honestly, while I like the "concept" of the Predator films,I've never been all that impressed with any of the actual films.
Predator: while it had some great moments, and a great "idea" behind the film, was fething painful to watch at times, mostly due to Swartzanagerrs(spl?) acting.
Sure,it was an "action/Sci-fi" flick, but Arnold is just awful IMO.
Predator 2: Same gripe,Some really good moments, but the "human" cast was terrible,I kept waiting for Mel Gibson to show up to save Danny Glovers butt by doing the curly bit with the Predator.
AVP: my personal favorite of the bunch.
AVPR: BURN THIS FILM!!!

BLASPHEMY! BURN THE HERETIC!
I wanted to like AvP, I really did. But it was so...underwhelming. They took the lithe, cunning, and stealthy Predator, and turned it into burly linebacker . . . That, and the acting/dialogue was terrible...and the chestburster incubation only took like 5 minutes (if that). I actually wasn't that unimpressed with the second film. If anything, I thought it was better than the first AvP. I hated that they showed the Predator homeworld...since it shouldn't even exist...because the Predators are nomads...and the Predalien was slowed (the concept is something that's been around for the while, but the one in the film was just stupid), also the wannabe Ripley was annoying. However, as a whole, I think it was better than the first. I swear to god, by the end of the first one, I thought Lex and the Predator were going to make out.
If you really want to see AvP how it should be, I encourage everyone to read the AvP novels and comic books! Those are fantastic, and will have you asking yourself "Why didn't they do this for the movies?"

Discovered that my wife owns AVP (must investigate the rest of her DVD collection more closely) the other day and found it a tolerable way to kill 90 minutes, though I've no great desire to watch it again.
For Predators to be successful, it has to do something new with the concept, like Cameron took Alien and made a completely different film. If they simply go for another bunch of humans being hunted down, but *gasp* this time there's more than one of them, it will be just another sequel in my eyes.
I guess I would try and invest differing personalities into the Predators which affected the way they behaved and made them more unpredictable. The humans also need to be working towards a goal other than surviving i.e. we need to achieve x because y will happen if we don't and these creatures are hampering our efforts.
EDIT - This different personalities thing is growing on me. Patient hunter, blood thirsty killer, inexperienced younger predator etc

I agree with you take on the film, yes it was "meh",but for me personaly,I found it to be the best in a franchise of "Meh" films.

The story is apparently the Predators "abduct" people and put them on a jungle planet as a sort of Game Reserve for the Predators to hunt them...
Incredibly dishonorable and un-Predator-like. My guess is this will end up like Alien: Resurrection (the most abominable movie in the series).

Sounds suspiciously like the first film except *gasp* this time they're on another planet (bet 'alien' jungle will have purple leaves).

Anyone who whould say AVP is better than Aliens needs to be slaped.
The Aliens series (the stand alone aliens films sans predators) far surpass ANY of the Predator films.
Even Resurection is better then the Predator films IMO.

Someone obviously doesn't know jack-squat about Predators . . .
Predators are founded on a warriors code focussed around the concept of honor. The taking of trophies is an honorable practice, which is why they only hunt things that are extremely dangerous (Humans, Aliens, etcs.) or the top dogs of their environment. In case you didn't notice, Predators will not kill those that cannot defend themselves, or pose no threat (the pregnant cop and "want some candy?" kid in predator 2, Anna in the first predator, Lex in AvP). To break the warrior's code by performing an act of dishonor will result in exile, or more often than not, death. The Predators are founded on a concept of "death before dishonor".
Also, if they weren't honorable, why would the Predator in the first Predator film not have flat out killed Arnold when he had him up against a wall in the first film. Rather than shooting him outright, he disarmed himself and fought Arnie in a fist fight.
FITZZ wrote: @ Darth Bob.

Let me give you my spiel on Resurrection:
First, the acting was terrible. Even Sigourney was a weak character through the film. Unlike the last three films, I could care less about what happened to the characters. The character development was so bad and stupid, I was hoping everyone died. I actually felt worse for the murdering rapists in the third movie then I did for the numbskulls in Resurrection.
Second, the very premise was ridiculous. I mean really? They bring Ripley back to life using her DNA- Wait what? Where did they get the DNA? She was incinerated in a giant furnace! Also, even if you managed to get Ripley's DNA, she wouldn't still have the bloody Xenomorph inside of her! The Alien is a seperate parasitic entity that simply lives inside the human host. That would be like me dieing after thanksgiving dinner, and then when they ressurect me I have a living turkey in my gullet. Next, somehow she has become half Alien. How...the frak...did she become half Alien?! That idea is just unbelieveably stupid. So now what she's some human-alien hybrid who has a mutual connection with the Aliens. The Xenomorphs are ruthless, they would never view a human being as its "mother", regardless of any off-genes in said human's DNA. Also, she should be melting from her own blood! The Xenomorph's exoskeleton is made of a fibre that is immune to the acid blood inside of them; human flesh is not. Finally, (and my biggest issue) we have the Newborn. So now your telling me that the Alien Queen (through being cloned from its host's DNA) was born with a human vagina. Seriously? So now the Queen is half human? The Queen gives birth (by essentially a c-section) to a pasty white maggot-thing with eyes, moobs, and a beer gut that thinks Ripley is its mom. Did I mention it makes dog noises and shouts "Mama" as it's shredded through a window (only redeeming quality of this movie)?
Resurrection was an attempt at some idiotic spanish guy trying to take the series in a different direction. Instead, he changed the entire "Alien" concept for his own selfish needs, and totally killed any chance of a halfway-decent Alien 5. It was as bad as when they took Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th and put him in space (or even Jaws: The Revenge).

Ok,point taken, perhaps I went a bit far bringing Resurection(which I hate BTW) into the debate.
I stiil say that by and large the Predator films don't hold a candle to (most) of the Alien films.

My hierarchy goes:

Predator
Alien 3
Predator 2
AvP:R
AvP
Alien: Resurrection
Alien 3 and Predator 2 are kinda at a tie though. The comics and novels beat all but the first three though.

Hostel 2(Again, torture porn!)
Touristas(Yes, the dark is scray. But not if you can't see wtf is going on in the goddam movie!)
Saw 4( I actually liked the first three, after that, it follows the universal rule of sequels: Everything afters sucks.)
The rest goes to Sci Fi original movies.

I'm looking forward to the MB remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Should be good times. For those who care you can pick up the first four "ANoES" movies as a 4in1 for $9.99 at Target.
Sorry to drag this OT.
Back on topic (kind of) my states Ex Governor was in the first one (no it wasn't Arnie).

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
