Subject: FUN ORKS IN 40K???

Disbeliever of the Greater Good

As an old gamer getting back into 40K i get a bit worried that all the fun of the game has gone. Reading army lists and watching stuff on YouTube it all seems to be about weather this list or that list is best for latest tournament.
What got me into 40K in the first place back in Rouge Trader days was the none seriousness of the games. As an example the old Ork rules were great, custom weapons that you were never sure what effect you would get, Weired boys that did strange things and just the whole spirit of the lists.
The good stuff now is all the cool models and scenery you can get and the great community out on the web, but have we lost the fun or is it still there?
Are their still fun Orks out there??

It all depends on where you play at and who your playing. I personally have a blast 9 times out of 10 whenever I play. Some of the silliness is gone yes but it more than makes up for the issues that were 2nd and 3rd edition.

A lot of the Ork madcap rules and weapons have long gone but they are still a pretty fun race to play and as always, there is plenty of scope for fun and character to be had in modelling them.

I think the Orks are the army that are the most like the older editions. They have a lot of crazy, but potentially devastating, options.

Nail on the head. I recently got back into the hobby, and found a group of players who are all about having a fun relaxed game. Some of the humor and randomness might be gone, but not all of it. Heck, IG have a Deathstrike missile where you don't know when it will go off, or how big the explosion will be!

The fun is still there trust me.
But as other have said it really really depends on who you are playing with.
If your out just to have a good time. avoid the tourny players. Not that they are not fun ether they ussually just prefer to use the chessy tough lists. Which there is nothing wrong with. If your into that sorta thing.

Fun is about two things: you and your opponent. If you're both good folks and in the game for the "right" reasons, you'll have fun. This reason might be just to laugh and roll dice, it might be a hardcore competitive brawl, whatever you both really want and agree to beforehand. In that vein, since I have at least a couple really good, fun, sportsman-like opponents, my orks are really fun no matter what I put out there.
Thematically "fun" units, though, include:
-Old Zogwort: the ability to turn any character into a squig is priceless
-Weirdboys in general
-Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun
-Zzzap guns
-Looted wagons
-Stormboyz
-Mad Doc Grotsnik
-Gretchin
-Dreads/kans/any mekboy "kustom job"
But really, ANY ork unit can be converted and played to be fun. They're the same old violent but lovable greenies from 2nd Ed., but with a better look and a forced turn to close combat specialists.
If you are looking for a fun army, the orks are still it.

Having read the old rules I would say they would lend themselves to a game of hilarity, but most players I play with would not want to have to gamble on the randomeness of old Orks.

Well, the 2nd Ed and Rogue Trader days had tons of charm, but the rules were even more erratic and the games took FOREVER because every last ork boy had different wargear, for example, and each could fire at a different unit, and there were 5-point virus grenades that could EASILY kill an entire army. It was random and interesting, but the game today, overall, is way better as a "game," even with all the rules loopholes and revisions and contradictions and lack of answers.
My advice is pick up the old codexes, either hardcopy or "other," read 'em for the fluff and see how the game has evolved, but don't try to bring back most of the stuff. It has faded into oblivion along with all those ugly, UGLY ork models.

I was always fond of vortex grenades, myself. It was the only way I had of taking out an Avatar back in the day... Orks are definitely still lots of fun. You probably do want to make sure you're playing against somebody who isn't in the game just to win, but as long as they're bringing something fluffy, you can bring in all sorts of ridiculousness. It doesn't have to be random to be hilarious, by the way... I'm always amused by the ideas of wrecking balls and boarding planks on vehicles, grots being in battle at all, Killa Kans (read their fluff - it's great), etc. I always appreciate the random stuff, though. (For example: stormboyz randomly blow themselves up. Not long ago I had a squad of stormboyz take out my daemon prince, with one remaining ork - who then tried to jump away and blew himself to pieces. Good times.)

Oh, and orks are still the pants, if only because you can use bitz from all of the other armies for converting (except Nids, I can't imagine them turning a Carnifex into a Trukk...Or could they...?).

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

No hes right, the old minis are just UGLY!
I always seem to roll just right on the ramshakle table, and my trukks karren into other units. Its friggin hilarious to me. But I dont play with the WAAC mentality. Granted, if a game starts to REALLY go my way, then I push hard for that head stompin ending. But normally, I play just for the fun of it all.

definitely! Orks, in my opinion, are the most fun army to play. Wierdboyz and shokk attack gunz are both random results, as well as alot of other gunz that use random results, which there are 5 or 6 of, at least. Besides that, i like how with orks it never matters wether or not you win, but that you can charge into battle screaming WAAAGH! and take out as many guys as you can!

I think the game is fun right now. Sure, it isn't outright silly, but the game flows well and I have a blast.
Plus, I can't get through a game with someone without joking around about some humorous narrative aspect.
