I've attended every Forgeworld open day at GW HQ and have since renamed the 'Forgeworld Waste of Time' days. Everytime I've gone there has been a +1hr queue to buy Forgeworld stuff, and by the time you get to the front, I guarantee you everything you want is "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now". E.g.
"I'd Like x3 Shadowswords, the new plastic / resin ones" "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now"
"erm, ok, how about a few Macharius Vulcans?" "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now"
"Any Vultures?" "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now"
"Any Macharius Vanquishers?" "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now"
"Foget it then, I'll take some of the Open Day only models" "Oh I'm sorry, were out of stock of that item, theres a minimum 5 weeks wait if you want to order it now"
And then when you quizz the guy at the top about why bother having an open day when you've nothing in stock to sell, "Well its not about buying the models, its about meeting the designers and chatting about modelling techniques" says Tony Cottrell, "Oh" I reply, "That will be why there's a +1 hr queue to buy stuff, and all the designers are sat in the middle of the room looking bored with no-one to talk to", "Well we can't sell you any of our stock, as its all on palletes to go to Games Day France".
On top of that, you also have a 'rigged' painting competition. Whilst I don't question the quality of the winners, it always seems to be from the range of models they are currently pushing. From my own experience, 2yrs ago there was this amazing Shadow Sword conversion painted up. Everyone who looked in the cabinet pointed to this one model above all the rest, even the FW designers did. Then came the competition and its Ewen Little, Tony Cottrell, and Will Haynes judging. We'll listen in on the judging, as did a few of us. Ewen, and rightly so, picked out the Shadow Sword. Will Hayes picks out a single DKK trooper (which, to be fair was well painted, but was outshone by the Shadow Sword). "This one wins, because its the model me and Simon made" says Will, "But" says Ewen, holding the Shadow Sword, "This is very impressive, I mean, look at the work gone into this". Time for Tony "DKK is the army we need to push now, so the trooper wins". And that was the end of the judging.
If you've not been before and have no intention of walking away with the models you want and don't mind having to queue up for an hour, its a good day. I won't be going this year.
