Haha, some chick came into my flgs today as I was checking for the restock for GW paints. She was looking for WoW action figures, which I thought was interesting. She wasn't bad looking, but not really my style.

I'm sorry, but was there supposed to be a point to that story other than fascination that a member of the opposite sex was in a game store? Maybe I'm just desensitized to it.

Wait- I'm behind. Is the person who was writing the story the same person in the article (that you link to at the bottom of the page) who runs the "flirting for nerds" seminars, and is a sex educator of some kind (through a website that seems to sell a lot of "sex for one" type items)?
I think I get it... and now it is funny... (sorry it took me so long )

If that's the point of the story, then they're really beating around the bush, and she lied to them when she told them her name.

With as many of us as are currently dating, engaged, or married, it must not be all that hard for the nerds to effectively romance the womenfolk.

I dunno, I've always felt that nerd have the hardest time establishing meaningful relationships, but usually end up with the best ones once they figure it out, usually the hard way. That's the way it was for me, anyway.
The biggest problem re: being a nerd and dealing with women is probably the way we get viewed up in middle school. Get ridiculed by jocks, suddenly you're ashamed of your own interests, and it stays with you for a while. Eventually, when you do attempt to make a relationship work, you hide that part of your life (or abandon it altogether) because you were conditioned that it's not something "normal" people do. Eventually she finds out and gets weirded out: not necessarily because you're into painting space elves, but because you hid a fundamental part of yourself like it was contraband.
Not to mention buying into the misconception that there aren't girl nerds. Hell, I'm willing to bet the proportions aren't even all that off, probably like 6:4. So when one walks into your FLGS you freak out! A girl? In my sanctum sanctorum!? Truly fate has smiled down upon me, I will now get in line behind my socially inept brethren to fawn over her! If you treat her like a goddess from the start, she's not really going to take you seriously. You'tr not a person to her, just another salivating worshipper, which I imagine must get frustrating pretty quickly.
Seriously, the best approach is to just be open about your hobbies, and don't try to specifically land that cutie at your FLGS. It's gonna suck the first couple of times you get shot down because you play 40K/ MtG/D&D, but if she wasn't going to be okay with it, why bother selling yourself out. Treat it like it's not a big deal, don't act ashamed of it, because let's face it: in any other situation, you wouldn't be. And don't get all defensive when she doesn't get that you play "space chess, except with rulers and dice" and says it's weird. It is weird, but it's fun. If she's worth your time she's not going to make a big deal about it.
I feel for my nerd bros who haven't figured out how it works, and I really can't blame them for being socially inept, because we've all been there. Meeting and building a meaningful relationship with a girl (or guy, for that matter) takes a lot of effort, but hiding your interests should not be one of your tactics.

I feel the third date is a good time to bring out just how nerdy one is. I'll always come clean when I meet a girl that I'm "pretty geeky at times" but they usually find it "cute" or "funny", but I won't demonstrate until I'm sure that taking the time to explain the hobby won't just be a big waste. Personally, I think us nerds are better off later in life with male/female companionship than the good-lookin jocks we all went to high-school with. We tend to think outside the box, and develop a very unique character that doesn't revolve around fancy clothes and perfectly gelled hair. Most of the nerds I know who practice good hygene and get outta the nerd-cave every now and then have no problem developing a good, healthy relationship with a member of the opposite (or same, no judgement) sex.

I find girls seem to like the idea of me Downhill Mountain Biking as well....so, I say again, be proud of being a nerd, and just let people see you in your own light.

I find it interesting that so many geeks go nuts when a female walks in. In my old store in oregon the guys would drool all over them, and half the time they either smelled or were just ugly. It's a girl get over it.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

What store in Oregon?
I live in the Portland area, and it seems like most stores I go into have at least one woman who plays 40k, and the store I frequent most (Guardian Games) has a pretty large number of women who play games of various kinds there. Of course, it's owned by women, and is a very well-run and kept store (not your standard troll-hole).

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Ha, I remember a woman walking into my local GW (she looked about mid 30's). One of the staff started getting friendly with her. Funnily enough, I've never seen him act that way to anyone else, he's usually just trying to force sales on anything that moves

But most people are nerds anyway. We all watched cartoons, played video games, said stupid catch phrases from crappy TV shows. A lot of chicks are nerds too, but girl nerds. They aren't interested in why Skeletor had a skull for a head and muscle man body or if the WFB world is in the Eye of Terror or not. They like stuff like Winnie the Pooh and Stitch (especially here...ever want to get with a Japanese girl buy her a Stitch doll and the biggest ice cream cone you can find.)
If the reporter hadn"t been exposed to some level of nerdom in her life by a relative, or a friend's I'd be really surprised. I think a lot of my nerd brethren just lack a lot of self confidence.
Then there is the whole neckbeard thing too...

I prefer the term "geek".
To me, nerd has always represented that anti-social being who is obsessed with comics, videogames, computers, miniatures, etc.
Whereas a geek is someone whos into all of that, but still maintains a social lifestyle just like your average joe, only they have an affinity for more "out there" stuff than the normal populace.

I remember a store I used to play in tournaments before I moved down to Florida. A lot of the gamers there kept telling me about some woman they often referred to as the Black Widow. She would come to tournaments wearing tight clothes and played a daemon bomb CSM army. The guys would be besides themselves if they played her and I was told she won every RTT she came out to play. It seemed like our schedules never coincided... I would come out and win an RTT then the Black Widow would come to the next one and win. Finally after at least a year I was told they had heard through the grapevine that she was planning to attend the next tournament there. I tailored my Dark Angels army to beat daemon bomb and came out. Sure enough she was there too and I instantly recognized her. She had been married to a veteran gamer that taught her how to power game and would come out to play when her husband was out of town on business. She was pretty hot looking and dressed like a little vixen. We both ended up on the top table in the final round facing off against each other but she didn't recognize me. The Black Widow was very talkative throughout our game constantly asking for advice and leaning over the table to show off her massive cleavage. The game was very close right up to the last turn then she asked if it was alright if she went outside to smoke a cigarette buy I said I wanted to finish the game first and then the Black Widow got mad. I ended up winning the game and was told she tanked my soft scores but I still won the RTT. Afterwards everybody asked me how I managed to beat her but I just smiled and said the dice had been very kind to me.

Ah yes the female in the store, rare but it happens lol. I brought my gf in one time just to show her what I was talking about when I was telling her about 40k. She just calls it "paints little toys". But I noticed some weird looks from some of the people in there. All my past relationships have been fine with warhammer. I also have a friend that likes to read my writing of 40k and she makes little inside jokes about. Like spreading gene seed... Is just one of them lol.
