I am thinking about going to gamesday this year but I have never been before- so is it really good or is it a waste of time and money?

Hey sport.

20 minutes passing without an answer to your thread isn't the end of the world. Learn patience, and don't presume that people are reading your thread and not responding out of disrespect - Games Day isn't something a lot of people go to in respect to the larger 40k community.

My friend's been a few times and he seems to think it's pretty good. If the cost of entry doesn't bother you, you might as well go for it.

Back in the day they used to be awesome. I went every year from '96 - '00 and had a blast. 2009 was the first year I've been since them and it was terrible. They are planning on bringing back a lot of the excitement this year though, so we'll see.

GW acknowledged that it's been lackluster over the last few years, so they cut down on the number of Games Days to have fewer, but larger, events. Considering that they're trying to rectify their mistakes, I say go for it.

I've been to the last two and they were okay, but for a couple of hours travel and the general cost I'm not sure it's actually worth it. The place is crammed so unless you've got a lot of patience or especially pointed elbows you won't get to see much of the Forgeworld stand or the Golden Demon models as they are usually 3 - 4 person deep. Just too many people in one place to allow you to get a good look at much in my opinion.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman

Is there any 40k events that are worth going to in the uk or should I just stick with going to local events at the gamesworkshop?

There are TWO weekend tournaments currenly being organised by Dakka members this year. One is in April, in Canterbury and one is at Warhammer World in August. The Canterbury one is over-18 only as it's in a university campus, but the Nottingham one is whoever.

Check my sig for links.

I recall Games Days of years past being grandiose and spectacular. There was so much to see and do, you never knew where to begin.

This past year at GD Baltimore, my first year back since '98, was lackluster and dull. It was an incredibly disheartening and underwhelming experience to say the least.

Since GW has admitted that GD's of recent years have been epic failures and are trying to get back to the roots of what the event is supposed to be, I will return for 2010.

To answer your question more directly, I think you should go because it seems that GW is out to prove something for the 2010 year and restore Games Day to its former glory.
