Since Defilers are Daemon Engines, I don't see Loyalist Marines having any equivalent. They're like really corrupted Dreadnoughts.

Nah. A corrupted Dreadnought would still have an Astartes inside. Even a Possessed Dreadnought still was 'organic' at one point.
Defilers are created through rituals, mass sacrifices, and manufacturing processes. They've never been 'organic'.
They're a daemon bound to the machine, and can't leave without the shell being destroyed.

Defilers were made for the black crusades. Pre heresy they were 10,000 years away from being invented, and also they require daemons to run.
Pre heresy they had dreadnoughts.

Pre-Heresy they didn't exist.
They came about during one of the prior Black Crusades, whichever one was 600 years prior to the 13th Black Crusade.

Closest equivalent you might get to a Defiler Pre-Heresy is probably a Knight.

Yea, but Orks steal things from their enemies. So seeing a looted defiler, or hammerhead or anything is totally fine in the Ork world. Defiler for a Space Marine army, would go against any fluff they have ever made. BUT that doesnt mean you cant make one and count it as something else (a knight or something similar) specially in friendly games

It would not go against fluff, not for Deathgaurd. They were the DIY chapter that had to make due since the Empire gave them the finger and did not supply them with gear. So I could see them going along and pulling some walker from a Dinggleberry mine and slapping a big bad boom gun to its hull and killing stuff with it. Yeah, it might not be a Demon enfused walker but who cares, it just has to Count-As.

I've seen a few. They have often been converted to look like mobilie walker artilery platforms. I don't have any links at the moment, but they have looked pretty cool.

If you read the short stories for 40k omnibus from black library theres a story about a defiler and its killed by a chaplain who reveals there is a space marine at the heart of the defiler Automatically Appended Next Post: let the galxy burn is the book and unforgiven is the story

I imagine a "pre-heresy" defiler might look something like the four-legged mech designs in games like Armored Core and Chromehounds.

It would be interesting to see. The best thing i could imagine would be to count it as either a leman russ or a vindicator to cater for the cannon. Replace the normal defiler turret with the more squat LR turret and make the chassis and legs look less "organic".
Plus if you countit as a Leman Russ you also get to model the sponsons and hull mounted gun onto it as well. Just lose the cc ability.
i woudln't have a problem with it.

Not quite true. He sees that there's a corpse of a sacrificed Marine in what should have been the crew compartment.

Well, personally, I would leave my fingers from "De-defile" a Defiler.. They are, after all, walking gun-platforms/heavy close combat units that are powered by a daemonic entity and created by god knows what kind of rituals and sacrifices.. Oh, not to forget, Abbadon ordered these critters for his -put in number here- Black Crusade..
BUT! -There are always buts..- If you want to do this, who are we to try and stop you? It's your army, your idea, and the worst that can happen are a bunch of people complaining..

I gotta agree with this dude, knights would be close. Or just make up an industrial mining style walker with combat modifications. Maybe you could get some of those Avatar exo-whatever toys and mod a cannon, guns, rock crushers, armor plates and all that jazz to it and call it a Defiler.

I'm doing an army using the CSM codex but modelling it without any chaos influence, so in my case I'll be converting them into Adeptus Mechanicus-supported vehicles, so servitor crew, servo skulls everywhere, that kind of thing. I was going to remodel the Defiler to an almost Knight structure, still counts as defiler but without the obvious demon influences.

Why not, they could have made one without a deamon in it. Because if there is something that should have been the crew compartment then they can use it as a real crew compartment. When you finish please post pics.
