Indiana Senator Evan Bayh has announced he's getting treatment for an addiction to the Facebook game Farmville.

"I realized that I had to make a choice between being a United States senator and tending my imaginary farm," a tearful Mr. Bayh told reporters."

No, seriously.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Actually Bayh announced he's leaving the Senate, one day before required deadline for getting back in. Pundits are calling this the "canary in the mine" for the Democrats in 2010.

Odds are he's positioning for a 2012 or more likely 2016 Presidential run.

What I don't get is why does a guy from Australia care so much about a foreign countries politics beyond the president. I don't even know/care who the president of Australia is let alone any podunct senators from queensland etc.

I actually like Sen. Bayh. He is a good man, and a good senator...but this is just weird. I mean he was crying over this! This isn't some horrible addiction like to crack, cheap whores or cannabis, this is just an obsession to a video game!

I did find Sen. Reid's comment to be hilarious though, "This is all the more surprising because he hails from a farm state, where there are plenty of actual farms he could take care of."

Your politics are more fun than our politics. You don't know about our senators because none of them come out in the public media and tearfully announce their addiction to Facebook games.

Well that's ummm... a thing. I like Americans. Your politicians don't reflect on you directly... otherwise I'd have to admit our politicians directly reflect on me, and I really don't want that to be true. I hope to travel to the US as soon as money permits (gotta see New York, Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Rockies, and that glorious country in the south - maybe Virginia is the best place?)

Not missing out on much not seeing NY. Liberty Island is cool though. Big giant crack in the Earth. Looks cooler from the air than travelling through it. Rockies are a great sight though.

Come up north between November and April. I dare an Aussie to subject himself to temps UNDER 10F.

Apparently US boutique beer is really good. I've only ever had the mainstream stuff like Bud and Coors, that certainly sucked.

I'm not sure why anyone would resign from the Senate in order to pursue a Presidency. Generally a politician moves to put himself into the public eye, rather than take himself out of it.

I'm stone cold serious. Thats much of the political scuttlebutt. Prospective players are bailing because they don't want to be tied to a failed Presidency (potentially) or failed House/Senate (definitely). Blue dogs are going to lose. By announcing he's out he can vote different and position himself in the party for a different run later.

You know the Founders would have said he's going back to private life, that "career politicians" are bad. They would be right.

Don't mistake him for Palin. He was a definite power in Congress.

That's pretty but it doesn't sing to me the same way that Minnesota image does.

But that looks delicious! Sign me up.

In other news, the story about Bayh's Farmville addiction is a joke, and all things considered its a pretty obvious one. A mate sent it to me assuming I'd know the author is a regular comedian on Huffington Post. I don't read the Huffington so I didn't. Well, colour me stupid.

To clear things up.

Mn'ers have an accent but it's over-exaggerated in such epic movies like Fargo and New In Town.

Though I can say for certain that southern accent does sound like it does on TV. LOL.

Not heard that anywhere, and I'm absolutely certain that I pay more attention to politics than you do. Particularly internal Democrat politics. To put it mildly, there is no benefit to leaving any representative system, and there is no precedent of representatives doing so. If he stayed, he had a better chance of being reelected. Now he has to battle the incumbent bias, which hasn't magically disappeared.

I lived in MN for 4 years, its not exaggerated, though the majority of people do not have the accent.

I should clarify. I've heard those rumors from people that don't, or shouldn't know what they're talking about. It makes sense in a sort of brutal way, but not once you apply nominal reasoning.

Just quickly wanted to return to this.

All (vague generalisation) non-americans care about american politics, for a two main reasons.

Firstly, American culture dominates the world, and one has little choice but to know about it.

Secondly, America is so large that its decisions affect everybody. Just ask the recession.

Also, american politics are such a mess that they usually make our problems look like surmountable obsticales. Its nice to know that somebody else is more screwed than you.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

George Orwell is my hero.

Social Experiment: if you're pissed like me, copy and paste this into your sig, and add a number after it.
