Subject: Qusetion bout the Tau's Devilfish

Hey guys,
I'm interested to know if the devilfish counts as a second troop choice under a standard mission.
The fish is mandatory for a team of pathfinders but not for the fire warriors. So... if the fish is optional (for fire warriors)
does it count as a second troop for a standard mission?
Thx

No. It is a Dedicated transport, and it does not take up any FoC slots. It counts as whatever slot it was bought for (for example, in a DoW mission where you can only Deploy two Troops UNITS, a FW Squad and their Fish count as 2 Troops Units) but it does not take up the slot. The mandatory Pathfinder Fish counts as a FA choice but does not use up any FA Selection "slots" (so cannot be Deployed in a DoW).

By the way, can you just buy a transport (without the troops)?

No. Well, it depends. Dedicated Transports ('Fish, Rhinos, Chimeras etc) you cannot. Vehicles that are separate, but have a transport Capacity (Land Raiders, Valkyries) you can. Of course this gets muddied by the Land Raider sometimes being a Dedicated Transport as well, in which case it does not take up a FoC Slot, just like any other Dedicated Transport.

Darn it. I was pretty sure, but wanted to check with someone who knows the rules better than I do. I was looking forward to buying trukks for the heck of it. :(

Welcome to Dakka.
Just to warn you, there will be some people who will say that you CAN, because of a certain way a few certain words are written in the codex. Please ignore them and hit them with bricks.

The section on page 38 of the tau rulebook gives a complete section on a tau devilfish, with "dedicated" no were to be found in the section for this unit. When another unit in the army, fire warriors or pathfinders, buys a devilfish it becomes a dedicated transport for them.
You can buy either regular devilfishes or dedicated ones though troop selection. This is an interesting notion as your two mandatory troop choices could be 6 fire warriors and one devilfish.

Of course, that depends on something which is labeled "Transport" in a section filled with units labelled "Troops" being a troop choice. By similar reasoning, Chaos Space Marines can take independent rhinos as troop choices and regular Space Marines can take independent drop pods as troop choices, and Dark Eldar can take raiders in the same manner.

Exactly. it's a "Transport" FoC selection. Until I see free "Transport" FoC slots, you cannot take any

while it may be a bit muddled due to a poor choice in formating by GW, it IS a dedicated transport and can't be bought on its own. doing so and insisting to your opponent that its legal is a great way to start your first tau tabletop rules argument.

Of course, none of those are accurate examples, because the Chaos Rhino instance has the Rhino sectioned off in it's own box on the page and says "Certain Chaos Space Marine units have the option of selecting a Chaos Rhino."
The Space Marine Drop Pod is in an entirely separate section titled "Dedicated Transports"
The Raider is the closest example, although once again it is clearly sectioned off in it's own box on the page, but atleast it's similar in that the only thing pointing to it being a transport is the word Transport being included in a position that has no strict meaning, although meaning can be inferred from it.
The thing with the Devilfish is, while the RAI is abundantly clear, it is listed in a VERY similar way to the other troops units around it, with the only exceptions being the sidebar and the fact that it's name starts with "Transport: ".
The RAW here definitely has the potential to go either way. Automatically Appended Next Post: Nightwatch wrote:Gwar is a hero in his own right, lurking on YMDC all day long. I agree, Gwar is an hero.
