havent really seen an "optimum" build for these guys. its obviously not TH/SS lol, since its about 150 more points than vanilla marines, which is dumb. Im not really sure how to set up a 5 man termi squad, I imagine a CML on one....some dual wolf claws, maybe some power fists, combi-meltas/plasmas? I dunno. some insight?

Idk the best build may be PF/Storm Bolter its only 43 points or the regular WG termie set up power weapon and storm bolter for 33 pts is nice to. But the great thing about these guys is having alot of different weapon load outs. I use several different termies in a squad with different builds. But most bang for your points is on of those two or maybe even WC/SS its only 53 and has a 3+ inv and the WC is best weapon to be used with a SS besides a PF/TH.

Honestly, the 33 point Terminators are pretty much the best. Give one of them a power fist, and get the Heavy Flamer.

Sadly, once you start buying all the cool wargear, they end up costing way too much.

I would probably do;
1 PW, Storm Bolter
2 PW, Storm Bolter
3 PW, Heavy Flamer
4 PW, Combi-Weapon (whatever suits your army list best)
5 PF, Storm Bolter

Ends up at 185 points, so they are actually affordable.

It depends on what role you're going to use them for. If I assume they're going to be basic line squads, there are several things I believe:

1) Several (singular) special options greatly improve the squad

2) Cheap is good

3) Shooty is better



So with that in mind I say the squad needs 1 Chain Fist (no powerfist, that's a waste of points. You want to be able to reliably kill vehicles when you need to, and 2d6 pen is a lot better), 1 Heavy weapon and 1 Storm Shield to take the ap2 hits. After these base considerations, I like to form the squad based on what is available in the box. So while more cheap powerweapons would be good, the box only comes with two and I won' make my life unneccisarily complicated

So the squad I'd make would look like:

Termy 1: Storm Bolter, Storm Shield
Termy 2: Storm Bolter, Power Weapon
Termy 3: Storm Bolter, Wolf Claw
Termy 4: Storm Bolter, Chain Fist
Termy 5: Heavy Weapon, Power Weapon


About 205 to 230 points if I'm not mistaken, depending on the HW taken. If you have points left over in your list, you could swap out some storm bolters for combi-bolters (I personally prefer to just go with storm bolters and leave the special shots to other elements of the army) or give the storm shield guy mark of the wulfen, although this makes him quite expensive for a bulletsoak. Two or more squads like these can put out respectable firepower on the move and support each other well.

I try to make my squads not too deadly in CC. Ideally, the enemy squad dies or runs in my opponent's turn, not my own. If the termies hit a squad and it evaporates, they're going to get mauled.

I thought you couldn't give any wolfguard the same wargear as another

That restriction only applies to ICs, not Wolf Guard Packs.

the key thing about wolf guard is that they are pretty much unlimited in what you can equip them with, so gear them for the role you purchase them for.

what I mean is if you are doing a loganwing you need bodies, so as many standard SB/PW builds as possible.

If you are building a deathstar close-assault unit to drop in with Logan I recommend the Wolf Claw SB build for the majority of the guys, with asscans/CMLs, at least one chainfist and at least one stormshield. Wolf Claws are a cheap upgrade and being able to select Prefered Enemy and rerolling all hits and wounds in combat is very very nice. (plus, as a terminator you already are not getting an extra attack from an extra close comabt weapon, so there is no downside to the 5 point investment.)

what if you did non TDA, and just did regular wolf guard with TH/SS......same abilitiy as termies except its 3+/3+, and you can actually pursue in combat since your not slow and purposful. no relentless....but, you dont need it in this case. im going to work out the points on that, might be interesting. Otherwise it seems like WC/SB is a good CC build.

Dont give WG in PA TH/SS its a waste imo just use the bodies from other WG to get in your hits mainly cause that TH/SS wielding WG would cost you 68 pts. Its best to just give some a PF or TH and use the rest of the unit as extra wounds. But if you really want some SS in there then just upgrade a few WG to be in TDA and leave them with the unit a WG in TDA cost 63 pts for a TH/SS.

WG in PA with a stormshield is fine for soaking up AP1/2 shots, just dont give him anything else, his purpose is to minimize losses from low-AP shooting and nothing else. and I wouldnt do more than 1 of them. Ultimately though, the points are better spent elsewhere.

WG in PA do best with Power weps and Frost Blades, if you give them Wolf Claws, Thunderhammers, or Powerfists then they lose the extra CCW attack.

If you're spending 43pts per model on Wolf Guard, you might as well take Grey Knight Terminators.

which is why you give them SB/PW for 33pts, or SB/WC for 38pts
