This is a question that I have always wondered. What army is most popular in warhammer 40k?

Please vote on the army(s) you play and tell me why you chose to collect/play them.

Between Alpha and Omega, and a little to the left

Orks is da biggest 'nd da baddest! WAAAAAAGH!

Of course, we all know space marines are going to win this, since GW has such a hard-on for them, and most of the new players buy them for that +3 armor save

I play Eldar.

At first I just looked at Eldar tanks, and thought they look cool. I stuck to them because I really like the play style.

Space Marinews (Hurr!!!) will always win most popular because they are.

I've heard that Space Marines by themselves outsell the whole of WHFB. I don't know the truth of that.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Started off with chaos then moved it to pure 1k sons and now have them with a mix of Tzeentch CSMs. Wanted to play them because i enjoy being the bad guy and like the fluff behind 1k sons. Saw a pure GKs army for sale here on dakka and bought them and have expanded on them. I decided to pick the GKs up because i have always loved the models and they are the kind of the exact opposite of my first army. My last army is Orks i bought them in response to the new Nid codex. The more i read about them and play them the more i enjoy them immensely.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

between myself and son we have owned and played every army except squats. the most popular army would be SM. I believe it was stated that 50% of all GW sales are marines.

I find it funny and ironic that Space Marines and Orks, both the factions that came with the latest starter are the two most popular.

AOBR was a really good value, before last years price increase. I had walked away from mini games for about 5 years, before I had 3 armies and was working on a 4th, but AOBR was the #1 reason I jumped back in, because I was able to get a nice foundation to build not only one, but two really good armies with. I have to admit, Ork and Space Marines are two of the best factions in the entire game too.

One could argue that winning and tournament-scene-wise that there are other better choices, which can use cheezy lists, but overall I think Space Marines and Orks have and always will be the two most popular factions in the entire game. I think some of it comes from people's familiarity with Orks versus Humans. It's something that both Warcraft, and 40k have fed off each others' popularity for years now with too.

RB wrote:I believe it was stated that 50% of all GW sales are marines.

Thing is, that 50% doesn't just cover Codex Marines - it also covers the other chapters with their own Codices (ie. Daemonhunters, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Black Templars and Space Wolves, assuming I haven't missed any) which means that those sales are spread across roughly 30-40% of the 40K armies range. Still a very significant amount, but not so much that it should just be assumed Space Marines are the most popular.

That said, I agree with Space Marines. If you ask someone what army they play, and there army is an Iyanden army, they'll say they play Eldar and then clarify. If someone plays Hive Fleet Leviathan, they'll say they play Tyranids. If someone plays Goffs, they'll say they play Orks. Heck, even a Deathwing player is likely as not to say Dark Angels.

However, if someone plays Imperial Fists, do you think they'll say Space Marines then clarify? What about Ultramarines or White Scars? These are all drawn from the same Codex, but because their chapter identity is so ingrained, it's almost like "Codex Marines" consists of three or four subfactions as well as just plain old Marines. So I would expect them to consist of three to five times as many armies overall as any other army out there.

I would not suggest doing this survey here, becuase this site is called dakkadakka, and is a site about the orks, so more ork players come here. Orks are 'da best though, as said before

Let me tell you a story. Friend buys blackreach. friend wanted the Space marines, asks his one friend if he wants the orks, he turns them down, freind gos to other freind and asks if he wants orks. The neglected orks found a home with that freind, and its been WAAAAAAAAAGGH! ever since.

Orks are awsome.

Better here than at B&C!

Unless you differentiate between the loyalist codexes (DA, SW, C:SM etc), Space Marines are going to win this little poll.

I realised I never said about my choice.

1) I first started with necrons because the idea of a regenerating was really cool. I went off them because I realised how outdated their codex is.
2) I then moved onto daemonhunters because i am addicted to rhinos I really like imperial guard stormtroopers so I got the best of both

Necrons & Eldar baby. One phases me out 99.9% of games, and the other one has a few powerful units that are a must have, with the rest of the codex choices being complete 4th edition crap. I love them !!!

Orks were my first to ever play with. They made me love the game. Then I went and bought Tyranids. I miss Orks. So my friend and I now own almost 8k orks, 6k Nids, And 1.25k Guard

I knew if I ever got into 40K, I'd play Tyranids. And now I just have a giant pile of plastic that needs paint.

However, the amount I hated fighting Marines made me think I needed some armor saves. So I went with the coolest models GW puts out, and got me some Grey Knights.

And that's what I play.

I have ~6K worth of orks (never ends, does it?) and will probably get a CSM army at some point. I'm saved true money-sinking addiction by the fact that I dislike IG and Space Marines, which are over 1/2 the armies. I played Tyranids back in 3rd, also Sisters of Battle, so I'm probably over any urge to get them. One of my buddies plays Daemons, otherwise I would consider them. Not really interested in the other races (DE, Eldar, Tau, Necrons) but that could always change with a decent model range.

Started with Necrons (Chosen because I couldn't paint), moved into 'Nids, gave up and into SW, because they're the only loyal marines I like, and my favourite army.
